I think we could handle around 100 million perfectly fine, we have 65 million now and less than 2% of the UK is classed as "built-on" (see: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18623096 )

100 million would mean a nice, strong domestic market. Stronger British businesses before they have to go international. Larger aggregate economy. More tax revenue to be spent on large projects, better economies of scale.

You only need a 1-2% of the total land area built-on in order to increase the population by a large amount. Space isn't the issue, the problem is making sure public services can cope, and finding the political will to build new houses in the right places and upgrade infrastructure
