This question is for those outside the Anglosphere. When you write English, do you use British or American spellings? Have you thought about it before? What spellings were you taught to use?

I'm from Ireland, but when I think about it American spellings frequently make more or as much sense as their British forms.
>>
>>54418701

Technically "aeroplane"/"airplane" and "arse"/"ass" aren't just spelling differences because they're also pronounced differently.

British. Schools are required to teach British English aka "Queen's English".

This makes oral presentations painful, especially when you, as an autistic socially anxious virginfag, have incredible English skills but need to talk like the bloody Queen of England because school and government regulations make you do so.

but otherwise we wouldn't have bloody fuckin great slang innit?

no one in the anglo shpere cares about this besides autists and people that made the mistake of getting a degree in English from Harvard. English is a very adaptable language, has different spellings for the same word, and does not have strong rules for differences between so called American versus British English. In fact most Americans would not argue there is a difference between the written versions of the two.

Besides, you're not really more relevant. Dutch people are far more likely to come into contact with Bongs than Burgers. On every holiday I take I'll see several Brits but I've only met one American in my entire life.
>>
>>54418701
Brit version, although considering America's influence here I won't be so rigid. Spelling wise both dialects make sense and don't make at the same time.
For example, if it is Analysis then there is no reason to write analyze. However, the same argument could be applied to defensive/offensive and defence/offence too.
It would be nice if the speakers of the current lingua franca could do what Spain does desu senpai.

Tyre = what's on the wheels of a car

Tire = getting tired, e.g. "I tire of this thread"

These aren't mere choices in spelling. There are many more words that exist in real English which are absent from American.

E.g. Check/Cheque and metre/meter

All 4 of those mean different things, but only 2 of those words exist in American English

Cheque = used in banking.
Check = to make sure of something

Metre = the unit of measurement
Meter = something which measures, like a gas meter

Imagine being so pathetic, so utterly shitter shattered that you randomly take letters out of words and call it a new language to be a special snowflake.

Americans are eternally pathetic for reasons such as this.
>>
>>54422329
Simplicity is good though. Seriously, how likely is it that if someone says they cashed a 'check' that you're not going to understand they mean the document used in banking? What nuance would be lost if you spell the unit of measurement "meter"? It seems like these subtly different spellings just make things unnecessarily complicated.
>>
I cannot tell the difference between an American and a Canadian accent, pretty much ever.

The British can't be trusted with their own language and have repeatedly demonstrated this since 1066, be it spelling, simplifying grammar due to norse being shit, or prestige borrowing.

We can't even create something like Academia Real to put to bed obviously stupid orthography like "ough" because everyone else is all about BUT IT LOOKS BETTER YOU TWAT MUH CULTURE.

>“Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought-crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by eactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. . . . The process will still be continuing long after you and I are dead. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller. Even now, of course, there's no reason or excuse for commiting thought-crime. It's merely a question of self-discipline, reality-control. But in the end there won't be any need even for that. . . . Has it ever occcured to you, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?”

I took umbrage with your assertion that "simplicity is good". It's not that simple. Fewer words in a vocabulary, fewer ways to express yourself, is indeed constraining.

I'm not sure what you're saying.

In Spring, all sorts of things spring up out of the ground, flowers bloom on trees, plants have their growth, all sorts of things that you could apply the verb spring to.

Also you're incorrect, Sprout refers to plants growing for the first time from seeds. Trees only sprout once, but they bloom once a year. Perhaps bloom would be a more apt term in some sense, but many things bloom year round, whereas they only spring up once.

Then the flowers turn to leaves, and in Fall there are no flowers on the trees, everyone sees the leaves falling down, and when you think of Fall you think of leaves falling down and being pretty and all that.

It's not that complicated, but maybe because Finland is colder they don't deal with this as much

>>
>>54430123
Let's be honest, outside of Newfoundland, everywhere English speaking in Canada has a corresponding accent in the US. The stereotypical 'aboot' accent exists in some northern states as well, and for the most part General Canadian sounds pretty much the same as General American.

No you don't understand

My understanding of it is that the element/metal was first referred to by the British spelling, aluminium (which is how it is pronounced over there and in most of the world). However, there was a typo at some point in the US where it was spelled aluminum and that spelling then became widespread here for some reason and so we use it still today

Most countries probably learn British English because America doesn't even consider English to be our official language, so to be PC Britain's English is more correct. Anyone who picks up American English is because our media has such a huge impact on the world. We typically don't put British speakers in our media unless they put on an American accent or the movie/show takes place in medieval times.

Pretty much every European language calls Z "zed" or "zet" or something along those lines. It comes from Greek in which Z was called Zeta.

Also your logic is flawed because you should also be complaining about S, L and H not following your "ee" rule
>>
British English:
The word autumn comes from late 14c., autumpne (modern form from 16c.), from Old French autumpne, automne (13c.), from Latin autumnus (also auctumnus, perhaps influenced by auctus "increase"), which is of unknown origin. Perhaps from Etruscan, but Tucker suggests a meaning "drying-up season" and a root in *auq- (which would suggest the form in -c- was the original) and compares archaic English sere-month "August."

American English: it's called fall cuz leaves fall XDXD

It's not about the ee rule, it's about fucking only having the FUCKING CONSONANT SOUND YOU'RE TRYING TO REPRESENT in the word. S, L, and H all only have the consonant in them. But meanwhile here's little ol' Z. What do you pronounce it as? Zed. Why the d? Are you trying to represent the sound D? What the fuck? The only exception should be fucking Double U because there's some stupid history behind it, calling Zee zed is just intentionally making no sense, it's like if your name was John and someone asked you how to spell your name you said "Jed bo hap ned" "excuse me sir which consonant do you mean to represent with these words?? the d sound or the J? b or o? Sir????" but who was phone because no one says it like that and you were a work of fiction from crazy fiction land where people pronounce letters like retards

In Australia it varies by region, so no real rules can be made about it. The south of the country is very Anglicised, so they usually use entirely English spelling. In NSW and QLD you get more "jail" instead of "gaol" and "program" not "programme", although the retarded spellings like "aluminum" for "aluminium" will never gain a foothold.
