You need a form of identification and that is up to the airline. Some airlines will even accept bus passes. But others will only accept a valid passport, drivers licence or EU/Swiss identity card.

My granddad tried flying from London to Glasgow with his passport that had expired two weeks before travel and he got told that he can't use it, so he pulled out his drivers licence and got told he couldn't use that either, so had to drive to Glasgow instead, which is an almost 7 hour drive instead of a 1 hour flight

For train tickets, you could travel from the most northerly tip of Scotland to the most southerly tip of Cornwall in England and not need to show ID once. But, if you are a foreigner or brown, you would still need to carry one.
