and that is really where i got a little bit stumped. I said 'well I guess nietzsche sort of says there is a complete void, whereas where I learnt the idea from says there is something underlying everything which is temporary, but you're right'.

then I referred back to my favourite book on the issue (which also appeals to a metaphysical underlying factor) and remembered that it dealt with this, demarcating an absolute and a relative view of things. absolutely material is temporary and illusionary, but we as humans are imperfect and the relative view of things cannot be denied by us, we have to eat when we're hungry, be nice to people etc etc.

What I think I got from it is that, the whole thing is a balance between relative and absolute worldview, both in extreme forms can be fatal, but also I guess I've been subconsciously following a very metaphysical underpinning. If I am a slave to relative animalistic world view, why not just shoot up smack and fuck as many bitches until i burn out, if there is the absolute world view i will just walk into traffic or lie in bed and starve myself to bed. So you have to moderate the two, I guess coming back to the original question as to 'why is it admirable', i guess its because for some reason we think the consumerist person is too far into the relativist view, so its good to be further away from them?

But I'm not even sure you can say that, if a monk and a guy who win the lottery live their two lives, and both die on 80, at their joint funeral what can you say? They both self-preserved long enough, so the point of striking a balance clearly isn't ensuring self-preservation. The question is really something about whether you really subscribe to the metaphysical thing underlying it all or not, I've been subconsciously subscribing, but I think that is more of a way of dealing with the world than a solid conviction. At the funeral of the monk and the lotto winner, what can I really say?
