actually, it's more impressive that japan's become one of the largest economies, which once even poised to overtake the US, despite all unfavorable conditions like little natural resources, small, mountainous lands to hinder development, frequent deadly natural disasters, a smaller population, etc.

The US is basically a continent-sized island, with the resources per population that is extremely favorable.

Island nations in general are always better off than continental nations, because they are protected from all sides by water, which requires their enemies to spend huge amount of resources to undertake amphibious invasions. The island nation, in turn, can save on defense and instead pour 100% of their national productivity on industrialization and invading others. The result is that small, aggressive island nations will always win against large, fractured and poor continental powers, that have to spend a large chunk of the productivity to both hold themselves together and to protect ALL their borders from invasions.

This basically is the recipe for wealth and power, as shown by Britain and Japan, and in a more perverse and ultimate manner by the US.

I say perverse, because, structurally, the US doesnt need to invade other countries, since, as oppossed to Japan or the Brits, they have enough resources themselves to become self-sufficient. The US invades and destroys other countries for the simply reason of stamping down would-be rivals in the buds, and derive an intense enjoyment in seeing the world burning around their neat secured contintal island, so that talents from all over the world leave their own countries to seek refugee in the US to contribute to the country's power. The US thus not only has the resources of a continent for themselves, but they also take away what little other countries have, to keep them down forever. Countries that try to rise up, are being contained and destroyed by America's system of vassaldom, that enforce their global hegemony.
