Ukraine circa 1900 was a part of Russia in all ways possible. People there considered themselves Russian. When sovoks came along, they started started fabricating Ukrainian "national identity", teaching people in Ukrainian "language", which was only used in revolutionary propaganda before the war, basically they tried hard as fuck to make Ukrainians consider themselves a separate nation. And that they did.
Same with Kazakhs, except that most of them were uneducated fucking tribals an age ago. Soviets literally created an alphabet for them, so they could promote their "language" and national identity too.
Chechens and other sheepfuckers were always rebellious, indeed. Russian Empire has maintained a military presence in Caucasus for most of 18th and 19th century. An immense effort was made to pacify those subhumans. And after the soviets did their thing, we're now back to where we started.
