Personally though I think divorce should be avoided if possible but if they clearly do not get along they should divorce. I upfront told my parents to divorce because their constant fighting was really bad. I especially thought it could hurt my brother who was really little at the time.

Even though parents being together and happy is the best I think divorce is often preferable to living in a unhappy relationship just for the children. That shit will mark the children too just in different ways.

I remember watching American movies as a kid were divorces were featured and was stunned when it always seemed like one parent, always the mother, got sole custody and then the father had to pay out of his nose just so he could see his kids for an hour every second weekend. Its just not really part of our culture for very long and its not as easy a process as it is in other places. Also keep in mind that money is new to us. 50 year olds wouldn't have had the money to live in two separate house holds as well as having any kind of social life to make divorce an in any way pleasant prospect.

Now the money exists I imagine our rates will start to more resemble our neighbors.
