Ask anything to someone who drove from western Europe to Afghanistan and back.

Very cool.
Your Defender?

If so, has it been reliable? I'm choosing between a Landcruiser and a Defender for driving around Australia, still can't make my mind up. Would you recommend a Defender?
>>
How was Syria, my terrorist friend?

Yes, bought for the trip.

Reliable, with the typical problems you'd expect on an old landie, but nothing that wasn't repairable.

It all depends on what you're looking for, both have their advantages.

Land Cruiser: Comfort, reliability, but should any problems arise, call your insurance and get towed to a garage.

Old Defender: No comfort whatsoever, less reliable, but should any problem arise, you can fix it with duct tape, a screwdriver, and your chewing gum. No kidding.

I wanted the Landie because of the remoteness of the places I was going. I needed a car that I could fix with any spare parts lying around.

Roughly 2500 euro each, 3 people.

>>51113462

Fair enough..

>>51113484

How many corrupt policemen asked for bribes? Too many to count to be honest.

How many did we actually bribe? 2 in the entire trip. We weren't pressed for time, so we would stand there and hold firm. They usually got bored, or scared that we weren't stupid. Generally in those countries it's a question of appearance. If you shout louder or appear more impressive, you win the game.

How many times did I think I'd die? Meh.. Hard to recall I'd say 3-4, with probably a dozen other very close calls.
>>
Did you ever feel unsafe?

What was the scariest part about the trip?

Did you see traces of ISIS?

Yes, of course. Happened quite a few times, not necessarily due to other people. For example, lost our breaks due to overheating while driving down a tiny dirt mountain road in Kyrgyzstan, had to drive the entire way using engine break in first gear... We could have run off the road and plummeted down the cliff at any time.

Scariest.. Not sure there is one scariest moment. Had a few very scary parts.

Yes, near and around Mosul, in Iraq.

>>51113817

Eeeh..

First: Illegally crossing the Iraq - Iran border at 3 in the morning, by mistake, and finding ourselves with 15 AK-47's aimed at our windshield held by Iranian revolutionary guards, detained, interrogated...

Second: Driving near Mosul, held by ISIS, in Iraq, to meet with Kurds west of Mosul. Anus clenching moment.

Third: Being shot at in northern Afghanistan. Potshots, but we sped the fuck away from there.

A few more...

>>51113839

Didn't try the cunt there. People were very hospitable, but it's a hard country to verify that. You are always on your guard. People ask a lot of questions, sometimes it's innocent, because part of their culture, but you have to watch out for that guy who wants the info to know about where you're staying, going and such.. Sometimes we had to decline hospitality because it just didn't feel right.

The drive was amazing. Afghanistan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

I spent a couple months Central America a few years ago, not in touristy places but in mediocre conditions. Best friends father was dying.

I feel people in developing countries just appreciate life so much more. They view it asa gift and don't act entitled to anything, the sense of community is astounding. I want to die there.

>>
>>51114952
This. The whole trip experience seems super cool and I respect the guy a lot for taking it, but driving near ISIS controlled areas (who are known to be worse with tourists driving around than the Taliban are) is just flat out bad.
My brother went on a trip through northern Iraq, 70 km of Mosul, and his friend informed him that there was an moderately sized ISIS post about 3 km from where they were driving. They're spread out thinly in such areas but they can EASILY spot you, and will definitely stop your car if they do.
My brother's convoy got the hell out of Iraq and fucked off to Northern Iran within the same day though.
They didn't really get apprehended by Iranian guards or anything, Northern Iran is pretty remote

I'm happy to say that I don't have the personal knowledge to affirm this statement, nor do I want to ever have such personal knowledge, but yeah. I'm pretty sure ISIS doesn't let that kind of stuff fly
>>
>>51115438

No, I value my life.

Literally the death of every Westerner by ISIS has been someone "seeking adventure" or reporters looking for big breaks in dangerous areas.

I'm not gonna stick my head in a Lion's mouth, thank you. There's better ways to get interesting stories.

It's not like you're involved in the action, you're just a witness. It's not your story. And you very reasonably could have been killed because ISIS is full of literal mongoloid idiots who kill for fun and ideology, and have historically.

You're an idiot.

>>51115098

Heh.. Well since we're not military, hard to spot an ambush, and even if you can spot one, it's too late. We're driving an unarmored civilian 4x4. However, the best advice is keep your ears open, and fucking listen to the locals. They know what's up.

>>51115190

Our car received a lot of attention, but we hid Europlates. We had duct tape over the "EU" and "FR" signs of the car. They just never see Defenders out there.

The strangest... wow.. I'd have to think on that. I'll get back to you. I'm not sure there is a single strangest thing!

>>51115258

We tried.. But roads were blocked, and much, much too dangerous. Wanted to go to Mazari Sharif, but afghan military escorted us back..

>>51115342

Eeeh cool yeah, but logistics make it hard. Egypt (like Iran) requires a Carnet de Passage to import a vehicle temporarily. Basically you leave a LARGE sum of money in escrow in your home country, and get it back only when you bring your car back. Egypt requires 300% of your vehicle's value...

That and the fact that down the Nile is South Sudan...

Also, the war in Afghanistan actually has far more deaths per year than all the deaths in the wars in the Sudans combined. So I don't see why you're more worried about South Sudan than you were about Afghanistan.

Well, depending a bit where you are, some of those spare parts lying around tend to be land cruiser parts.

Land cruiser parts can be found anywhere but:

- Cost a metric fuckton more

- Need a garage to do it for you (more expenses)

Can't really call out any country as a general favorite, each country has its specificities.. Overall the one I remember the most is probably Tajikistan, due to the majestic beauty of the mountains, and natural roughness of that part of the trip.

>>51120255

Beaucoup de voyages, mais aucune experience de trip en voiture comme ca.

On s'y connaissais un peu, mais vraiment la base necessaire. Le reste on l'a appris sur le tas.

Ouais on avait tous le meme age, et on est tous etudiants.

Heh..

>>51120556

25 now, 24 when I started the trip.

Parts of it I would definitely recommend, others not. It all depends on your experience and wishes. I like rough trips, and don't mind very minimal comfort, for example.

Well, of course my parent's weren't too crazy about the idea, but it's my money and my time. And they're kind of used to me doing stupid shit like that.

Stalked.

>>51122086

Two main reasons:

- Old Cruisers are generally very well used, and have a high km rate. Only one I found before my trip in a similar price range had over 650.000 km on it... Not the kind of untested car you want for a trip like that.

- Old Defenders are unbelievably easy to fix. You open the hood, knock a couple things around, check if anything is leaking, and voila, it's fixed. They have a much simpler system.

>>51122553

To each their own... For me, what you described is more enjoyable than doing shit all lying on a random beach in the middle of a horde of loud tourists. It's a good thing we have different tastes, makes life interesting.

>>51122791

As best we could. A lot of pointing, some pidgin words we picked up, pointing to mouth when we were hungry, things like that.

>>51122951

No.. To be honest, real life isn't like that unless you actually live there. Odds are, by passing through, you won't see anything.

As far a Turks and Kurds fighting, we were immensely lucky. We past from Turkey to Iraq 2 days before the suicide bombing on the border that caused the escalation in tensions between Kurds and Turks. It happened exactly where we were. We got the hell out of there before any serious fighting began.

>>51123224

I most definitely would. Have been to the US and Canada many, many times, but never central and southern. Would love to.

>>51123431

No, luckily I've been to the Caucasus on previous trips. Went to Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

In general, I have been to all european countries, but on this specific trip:

France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria, then on to Turkey.

On the way back, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, and France.

It's not black or white though, there are things between all-inclusive weekends to Pattaya and weeks of driving in middle-east wasteland. You can go on a nice holiday in some non-touristy place, rent a car/bike and get around, or go trekking or hiking for a couple days. Maybe combine it with staying at a hotel and check out the local city life. A rewarding experience while still being comfortable and relaxing and not having jihadists trying to put a bullet through your head.

Seems like today a lot of people just try their hardest to make themselves seem more genuine and interesting and special than the next guy on their facebook friend list. People don't cook to eat something good, they cook so that they can show their slow-cooked artisan-burger with homemade dressing and bread to their friends, and the obscure microbrew beer they drink along with it. They don't read books because they think they seem interesting, they read them so they can brag about how pretentious and difficult the literature they read is. And they don't go on holiday to relax or enjoy themselves or visiting a place they're curious about, they go on the hardest most enduring journey they can think of so that they can seem more interesting and genuine than everyone else. Always the need to be better and one-upping the rest. The society of share and like. Not saying that you're like that but a lot of people are, sadly.

There's criticism and dark humor, and then just pure shitposting. I don't give a fuck what people think of me or my motives, but at least put some effort into making it humorous.

>>51124233

Although I agree with the sentiment, it doesn't go against what I stated previously. I have, in the past, travelled to out of the way places for a bit of backpacking, or hopped on a train to go somewhere and relax. I wanted something different, and I wanted to overland it.

To be honest, most of my friends have no idea about this, pics were only for family and close friends. No facebooking this shit.

To me, every moment of it was enjoyable. Eating dust while riding an uncomfortable old car up a mountain and having to repair it, IS enjoyable to me. I like challenges. I like to overcome them. I like knowing that I can do it, knowing myself and my capabilities more.

I do it for me, not others. Selfish? Perhaps. But after all, we all live for our own happiness.

Pic related, it's my air conditionning unit.
