Are Catalans still remembered in the Balkans?

We used to go full "viking" around Italy, Greece, the Balkans... and apparently our name survived as part of the mythology of those regions.
For example:

In Albania, the "Katallani" is a cyclops monster, a giant blacksmith that feeds on humans.
In Greece, mothers used to tell to their bad-behaved children that the Catalans would come and take them. (like the bogeyman).

Are there any places where this still happens? I'm very curious about it.

Quick background, because of work I stayed in both countries prior to really knowing all that much about either. Spent more time in Romania and was actually engaged to a women there (relationship died after the reality of her getting a visa of any kind became clear).
I loved both countries and found the people to be extremely kind, inquisitive, intelligent (in the case of Romanian women especially...my god half of the ones I met spoke 5 languages and knew far more about the US and the world then the retarded women we have here).
Oh by the way, when I speak of Romanians or Poles I am in NO WAY referring to gypsies...like seriously...fuck them so much.


So here are my questions:
1. Are Romanians and Poles really despised as much as I see on here?
2. Have many of you visited these countries and what was your experience?
3. How is it that despite both Ro. and Poland supporting the US in everything (letting us put troops, bases, missiles and etc. in their countries) we still do not allow them into the visa waiver program??? And why doesn't Romania and Poland say fuck you to us for taking advantage??

The official bullshit response is that they overstay their visas or don't have their rejection rates low enough. I call bullshit on this. I've seen how our embassy operates in Bucharest and its a fucking joke. The consular officers are insulting, unhelpful, unprofessional and down right criminal in their actions. They actively look for ANYTHING to disqualify an applicant or just straight make things up.
