I have a problem with rotating objects in 3d in my mind. Am I mentally impaired or is it common with beginners? I can't imagine constructing stuff from imagination without the ability to see the whole thing.
Ability to rotate objects mentally is often cited as a higher IQ skill but that doesnt mean youre impaired and this can be learned. observe more objects.
practice drawing things from memory(look at your reference for a set amount of time without drawing and then try to do the drawing without looking at your reference) and do studies were you draw an object from a different angle to the one shown in the reference. Do this and you will get way better at seeing images in your mind.
I tend to have the opposite problem I have to either rotate the object and or force it to move like a short gif. if I try to picture a still image I can't hold it for more than a few seconds without it distorting

took me like 2 years to start being able to think in 3D and be able to rotate things freely in my mind,
I'd suggest just learning some basic perspective and spending some time in 3D programs such as maya or whatever and just messing around to get used to thinking in 3D
You can do it anon!
what happens when you try to rotate the object, dose the not move or is it more like a flat image

Much of the reason behind working with simple shapes is because their rotations are predictable. You either haven't learned those geometric rules, or you haven't practiced enough. Work hard, and give yourself time for the lessons to sink in.

Most artists can master in in a week or two.

It's skill you have to hone and upkeep. I stopped drawing for a couple of years only to find out that I'd lost my accuracy when it came to rotating things in space.

Try printing out one of these paper cube templates and study how it behaves when you turn it. That helped me a lot.
