I have a greyscale painting that I want to add colour to. I could try using multiply layers by trial and error, but is there a more methodical way to get the colour I want with this method?

Try gradient maps

Theres plenty of ways of colorizing grayscale in PS
>color layer mode
>soft light
>overlay
>hard light
All have different uses and effects, ie. overlay pushes contrast by a lot and doesnt colorize light values etc., so you want to experiment and understand how these work. Gradient maps are also a pretty good starting point to work from, just remember to set the gradient map layer to color, otherwise its gonna mess up your values.

I find overlay have the best effect in terms of getting the colour i want ,but it usually ruin the values established in the bw work, what i do is to copy the bw as an additional layer again and overlay it with lower opacity, merge then overpaint
Bump, I actually want to try to know how they do these. I find that with grisaille it's easier on values control.
Has an artist made a book/course/video for this?

damn this madman doesn't even use an extra layer

i think most people would just paint over it, just using the black and white painting as a guide, with maybe some cheeky transparency/layer effects here and there

do most digital painters correct their drawings as much as this guy? not hating, just wondering

Well, it's one of the bigger advantages of digital, so why not use iit?

Well you can try artgerm's technic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB9Jui9wQNg
