I don't know to speak german but I use a german dictionary (read hdd full with pics, movies and cartoons) because I am learning to speak german atm

after I'll be able to say I can speak german I'll still keep my dictionary around because i'll never learn all the words in it

and is not my fault 100% of the normies I tell I am learning to speak german correlate that with already being able to speak german because they only know to recognize german, when they hear it. Sometimes along the road a started to tell ppl I know german only because it's too much a bother to explain, but I am not serious with myself when I say that and I would never say it to a german speaking person

References are good for building visual memory bank. Do a shitton, but NEVER use a reference for original artwork because shit like >>3111703 happens, and people WILL connect the dots. And it does say many things about you and your level. References are like classic songs you listen to to build up your skill until you can subtly use the base idea into your own song.

People who write books use dictionaries and other books as reference.

You can use references for original work, it just depends what your intent is. A lot of the best art that's ever been made was just done from photos and models.

The problem with the guy in the thread you linked isn't that he's using reference, it's that he's stealing multiple compositions from another artist as a lazy way to make a comic. Changing the style of the characters and rendering it isn't enough to cover for the fact that he's plagiarized it wholesale.

If I had to say where to consider not using reference, it's when it comes to using someone else's art, because there's a lot more to 'steal' from it than you get with a model or photos. The other artist has solved the problems already with regard to composition and technique or whatnot, and it's too easy to just end up plagiarizing that, instead of using models and figuring out the meat of the drawing process for yourself.

Two people can use the same model and come out with two very unique drawings, but two people copying the same drawing will have very similar results.

We are symbol artists. The more reference you use, the more believable your symbols. Eventually you'll be able to quickly draw a face without ref because the symbol you've trained is refined and you understand the form in your mind.
