is art school worth it?

i wouldn't know but I did watch this one video about some guy's opinion on it after getting his degree.

It depends on the school obviously but a lot of them don't give you much* other than class environment + clear assignments. If you feel like you need that push then it might help you

*If you're going to a good school you're also getting connections.
>>
is even calarts worth or shit?
>>
>>3113315
dude its not worth nothing. but calarts weirds me out. im looking at all the accepted portfolios and they are really good, seems lime the only thing you really learn in school is how to actually make animations. but drawing skill seems to just remain the same.
also, knowing calarts is specifically for getting a job in a big anim studio, the school itself feels like a holding pen for fresh hires.
gives a "last legs" vibe to the disney machine.

I wonder if there's any /r/AsianMasculinity people who browse /ic/.

Chinese students enroll at Repin if they're serious. Hell, look at the language selection on their site - http://www.artsacademy.ru/ - see anything missing?

It's really up to you if it is or not.

No. Noah bradley wrote a thorough blog post on why you shouldn't go to art school:

tldr: they are so fucking expensive you can't pay off the loans with an artist salary. Calarts literally costs more than an ivy league college.
>>
Not really in my own experience.
In my class there was me and maybe 3 other people who were in any way decent/committed to art.
I honestly learned nothing useful. The best thing I got out of it was life drawing classes. My tutors didn't even give me proper critique, which is what I really wanted.
Eventually I dropped out much to the dismay of my tutors and it turned out so did 2 of the other people I thought were good.
I kept in contact with the people who stayed, they graduated and none of them work in art now because they never really got good.
I also knew people in the years above/below mine. One of the good ones I knew dropped out also and works in an animation studio now solely based on his portfolio.
I think having a degree can give you an advantage... but only if you are good and committed anyway. It's worthless if you aren't. And at that point people don't seem to care that much about degrees if your work is strong.
>>
Only if you're rich and wouldn't have to worry about loans. If you really want to go to art school, better to build up a really good entering portfolio and get a scholarship. I find that it's mostly the already skilled and usually older students who get the most out of it anyways.

American art schools ain't got shit! If you're in Europe go for it!

this is good
Simply put; self teach yourself for a good 2 years, then hit up some online classes and get to know some artists buddies. Get feedback, redlines. Feedback is the most important thing as you'll need that if you want to improve.

What are you smoking, all we do here in art school is doing some feminist/diversity stuff by painting with period blood and doing edgy social critique with blobs of paint and lines. Do you mean ateliers? The biggest ones are built by Americans (Academy of Art Florence) and the one I am interested in is the Russian Academy of Art in Florence. I am not criticizing, I am genuinely curious if there is something I am missing here. I live in Germany, it's perfect if you want to study STEM (and basically free) but an absolute useless waste of time if you want to study art. I always thought the American Ateliers were way superior. Let me know what you guys think, I am planning to make my decision final next year.

I got into a private art college in MN on a full scholarship and start classes on Wednesday. I'll let you know how it goes!
>>
>>3114963
What kind of classes do you got?
>>
>>3114891
>look up some Russian Academy of Art in Florence student shows
>literally nothing except charcoal portraits and pseudo-christian paintings
lmao sure go for it pal

calarts is more or less the only way to get yourself a place in the world of western animation. The actual worth of the school is very subjective

Calarts is rather misleading.
It's supposed to be an art school (and it bills itself as one), but they don't really teach you how to draw or paint, instead they teach you how to "be creative" in a number of fields.

For example, if you already know how to draw and get in to learn further, you will not learn anatomy, fundamentals or even art techniques at all. Instead you'll learn how to craft a story using whatever art skills you already have.
The workshop teaches you how to implement topical subjects and current social themes into your work in order to create a piece that resonates with today's audiences.

Accepted artists don't really get any better once they finish their 8-year education. (Check the accepted sketchbooks on Youtube and then compare with the artist's recent work.)

Why do you think acclaimed directors like Brad Bird and Tim Burton draw like shit?

im pretty sure that's how art school is suppose to be. Went to a cc and transferred to a 4 year. It's basically the way you described it. I mean you get little art lessons, but other than that, you do projects based on whatever skills you got. That's exactly why a lot of pros say art school is not necessary, because you can learn everything on your own

Depends. What do you expect to get out of it? I went to a state school, and got an MfA with a concentration in Illustration, and took the fundamentals of art the first two years, building on a lifetime of self-taught technique, an artist mother, and solid art advancement in high school under a great art teacher. My expectations were to have a portfolio I could hired from, walking out, and learning as much as I could about all of it - technique, mediums, concept, color theory, etc. I still use most of what I learned there every day. What I got from it was focused study, and exploration under the guidance of teachers and friends in classes. I got figure drawing and sculpture, anatomy for artists, art history, every medium from charcoal to egg tempra, and walked out with a solid portfolio, I was already working as an illustrator, and most important - confidence.

So, what do you expect from art school, and what school will get that done? If you want to dive into oil painting and traditional art, an altelier is probably the way to go. Animation? CalArts. More artsy illustrative stuff? College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, or Cal State Long Beach, for their illustration program.

You need to figure out what YOU want, then figure out how to get there, and if school will help you get there.

And, in today's job market, an MfA from a decent 4 year state school is better than no degree, and most staff jobs look for a degree. Hell, an MfA could get you into a junior design gig, with a couple of design pieces thrown in your portfolio.

But, if your goals are to draw "cute girls" and porn - self taught is probably fine, just allow more time than 4 years to make serious improvement. Get a decent day job that isn't too stressful, and grind away at Loomis.

I didn't claim it's the perfect school. It's definitely better than going to a school that rejects fundamentals and life drawing completely. Not bashing conceptual art in general, I just don't want to go to a school where not a single professor can draw - that's not who I want to be.
>>
>>3115027
What the hell are you talking about. The gallery tab on their website shows drawing and painting, and of a calibre that's much, much higher than any work posted here - their first year work is the equivalent of 4th year work at a state school in the US. And, you're mocking them for traditional technique - when that's exactly what they're supposed to be teaching. Just admit it, you're trolling.
