How do you actually go about promoting AND selling your artwork on Instagram?
I know the method of getting lots of likes and followers is to draw fan art, what is trending right now (actors, music, movies, shows). But that stuff doesn't sell well does it? I am actually genuinely curious how many people buy prints or originals of famous peoples faces...
But when you want to make a living from your art, is fan art the way to go? I don't feel like it is, not if you want your artistic name to have any weight and merit with it...
So how does one go about selling and promoting art on Instagram?

PS; the whole hyper realistic fan art feels so unoriginal, so uninspired and so over done. Instagram is saturated with it, its so rare to see something cool that stands out.

I've bought/commissioned art from people on Instagram AND my gf makes her living off Instagram. So I feel like I might have an inkling of insight from both sides. Talking as a consumer. You are right. Hyper realistic stuff (at least to me) is bullshit. If I wanted hyperrealistic I'd take a picture. Fanart is cool but I'm sick to fucking death of looking at Stephen Universe and the Gems on my feed now. What I want as consumer is the artist's style. One of my favorite artists said something along the lines of "draw and draw and draw and when you're sick of drawing draw some more and in some drawings you'll notice maybe you liked the way you drew the eyes or the hands and next time you will draw it in a similar fashion. After enough time you'll have a whole body and it'll be your own style." That's what's cool and stands out and what I want in my house framed up on my wall.
Insider tips as seller from gf: it's not pandering to masses that gets you followers. It's all in the hashtags. Hashtag the shit out of it. Nobody will find you in sea of posts if you don't put out a beacon. Once you start getting a following you'll show up in the feed of your friends and then friends of friends and it'll go from there. Post regularly but post the good stuff. Instagram is a portfolio. Leave your hard work and practice offline or on a Tumblr or something.

Best of luck Anon. And of course, the obligatory "draw what YOU like".

P.S. How much for that Christopher Walken?

Thanks for the tips. I never wanted to be one to pander to the public so I'm good there.
I've read that each thing you post should have about 10-15 hashtags, and only if they relate to what you post, is that what you mean when you say "hashtag the shit out of it"??
Also any chance I could see your gf's account please?

I should've mentioned that the Walken pic isn't related, I just googled bad portraits and it was one of the first results.

Why do kids always draw Light and smeary like this??
>>

>Light
Don't want to mess up by going too dark.
>Smeary
Don't know how to be careful.

makes sense in theory, but it's not guaranteed. There's an artist I am following who has posted only 30 times since August 2015, uses minimal hashtags and has like 30K followers. Fucking mystery to me.
