Is it helpful to learn programs like Indesign if you want to become a character designer or a comic book artist? My parents want me to learn graphic design and get work at a printing company. But I really want to learn proper art fundamentals and try to get things like comic books published or design cool characters for a living. Indesign and other programs are kind of interesting to work with, and you can do some cool stuff with it. But I feel if I work for a printing company, it will mostly be layout work.

Nothing because they're both the same thing. Playing to your strengths is giving up on improving yourself.

How do you guys use references? For example if you're doing a study of a face at some angle, do you construct it and try to "rebuild" it to try to make it look like the picture (loomis), or do you just copy what you see (keys to drawing)? when practicing perspective do you use a ruler? when grinding this shit should I be doing it freehand? how do you make sure shit is accurate if you have points that exist beyond the paper?
>>
>>3110341
Obviously you use a ruler, how else are you supposed to draw straight lines? A protractor? Work your way up to freehand slowly, but realize accuracy and patience is better than messy and lazy. If you have points beyond the paper, you get more paper and tape it to the original paper. Now your paper is suddenly extended.
>>
>>3109206
The goal? And probably the reason. You can play to your strengths and improve on your weaknesses as well. If we understand strengths as areas you have some sort of inclination towards (already a certain level of proficiency, you like doing it), playing to them doesn't mean stagnation, but improving where chances of success (like reaching a high level) are heightened.
No matter which path we'll take, it will likely also require skills of us that we consider weaknesses and you can and probably should improve on them too. But why ignore your strengths if you have them?
>>
>>3110341

If you wanted to draw a box really far away but zoomed in (or through long focal length lens) in this method, you'd find for the points to fit in a single page, the box would be miniscule or you could have a lot of pages...

>>3110341
It would depend on how far what youre drawing is. Very close up to the observer you should start using curves to denote a 5point(?) Very far away you can approximate a one point(front facing) or parallel with acute differences(sideways etc).

you can generally get away with just a horizon line and lines that look like they converge,. something like top right in pic attached is all you really need for illustration/painting- unless the focus is on perspective

Which raises the question if whether or not practicing perspective rigorously is that essential- thinking of life drawing, plein air or even still life. youre never close enough to whatever youre drawing to draw it in an extreme angle and when drawing still life <1m away binocular vision is retarded. realistically you have to frequently close your non-dominant eye to get an accurate drawing/painting.
Am i preaching a valid point here? Im just irritated at looking at drawings with extreme perspectives that dont consider how close/far the person looking at the image is- generally an eyesore on a laptop screen at normal sitting distance..

How do I get facial features to line up with a reference I'm drawing?

It seems like every time I go to draw a picture of a face, I experience feature drift. Eyes too far apart, mouth too far from the nose. Shit's frustrating.
>>
>>3112512
look at the whole head as a one shape, and then put a blob of form (oval, round, whatever, it can be as disfigurated as you want) on where you want to draw the head. The point is to have about the SAME PROPORTIONS as the head, and NOT OUTLINE

afterwards draw on top of that shape the head. None of the edges of that shape have to correlate to any of the final lines of the drawing or to be be any kind of construction guildline. The shape is just for you not to drift away on the page while putting details in.

This isn't exactly an art question but more about the board itself.

Is photorealism the only acceptable way to go?
Are anime and stylization actually bad?
Should I take /ic/ seriously?

I shit you not, /ic/ has slowly been driving me away from my dream of becoming a cartoonist for videogames and I'm not really into photorealism. While I think it's awesome and respect the ones who do it, I also think it's boring and not for me.
>>
>>3113026

Where on earth did you hear that from. Stylization isn't bad per se but you should hone your technical skill to make better cartoons. That does not mean attend an atelier in the chinese mountains and render a forearm at 60 day intervals. As far as I know, majority of this board doesn't want to be in the fine art world.

What's better for sketching in your opinion, pencil or pen? I feel like I heard somewhere that pen is better because it forces you to think about every line you put down. But then with pen I feel like I can't do construction because it will make the finished sketch look way too messy.

how long should you practise value painting before moving onto colour? i keep trying to do colour work but my lack of ability keeps halting me, and i'm not sure if that's a forever thing or exclusively a beginner problem

>>3114031
i like very bold pencils, and not rubbing anything out. it depends on what sketching style you like, something very precise or something very forceful.
>>
>>3114616
I'm a beginner and I was able to move on to color after understanding value enough to produce three-dimensional looking studies. Although since my values are the greatest, I have to move back and do value studies anyways, so in the end it's up to you. I found it fun to play with all the colors though with the knowledge that value will help me out with them.

Develop a social media presence. Draw fanart for a popular IP to get some eyes on your art. Try to befriend popular artists, they come in handy when your commission post needs a signal boost.

Porn (especially niche fetishes) and furries are the most lucrative. If your art isn't that good yet, focus on talking to people and developing a friendly online persona. My art isn't the best but I have longtime followers who continue to commission me simply because they like me.

Furaffinity is your best bet if you want to make real money on commissions. Tumblr is a good place for exposure but everyone there is broke. Many artists undercharge, so potential buyers tend to be resistant to fair compensation.

Good luck.

Avoid being pushy. Best thing to do occasionally talk to them on twitter over a shared interest but otherwise do your own thing.
>>3114976
Separate names, give false personal information, don't share art you've shared elsewhere. Don't cross streans, basically. If you wanna go the extra mile modify your art style some, like mixing up the brushes you use, common colors, and so on.

I don't know if this is the best place to ask, but anyway...

Why is Picasso regarded as one of the greatest paintors of all time when all his paintings are shit from a technical perspective and have no meaning at all? >It's mostly because I'm impatient and hate waiting for the ink to dry. Also the upkeep with cleaning the damn nibs and making sure they work. I can't seem to get them to consistently work no matter what I do.
DESU these are all pretty easy to avoid. There are good quick drying inks and working left to right(or right to left if you're left handed) will keep you from smearing lines. Cleaning nibs is pretty easy depending on the ink used, but a quick alcohol bath and all the ink should wipe off. If you're having issues getting them working, there can be a couple of problems, from misaligned tines(aka cheap nibs) to not having removed the oil coating they come with(passing it through a flame or cleaning it with dish soap).
>Also I wanted to know if anyone has experience with the school g manga pen because that seems like a good alternative to dip pens from all the things I've read
It's not. It has very little flex and is prone to breakage if you try to flex it a lot.

>>
>>3115463
any antialiased lineart will do this, this isnt exclusive to photoshop
there is a trick to work around this by using magic wand and expanding selection
or just working bigger so that when you shrink artwork it disappears
>>
>>3115463
the brush has a soft edge. the fill tool will only fill up to the edge of where the brush has drawn and because the edge isn't opaque this will happen. you need to select the area with the wand, expand the selection by a few pixels, fill on separate layer and the merge the layers.

So, if I want to get good at drawing the human body, I just have to keep drawing from references and go to life drawing sessions when I can (they're only once a month in my city). And eventually I'll understand how the human body works? And get good at it?
Everything looks so misshapen and lumpy when I do it... I wish I could go to life-drawing classes more often.

anyone using Krita?

How to do "serious" studies?
The word intimidates me, and I'm never sure I'm doing it right, especially when the people who post studies here are already skilled.

For example, in the case of anatomy studies, the only thing I have to do is copy from a reference to the best of my ability while thinking logically of how to construct the body and trying to get a grip of what I am actually doing and then try again?
>>
>>3116450
>and then try again?
that and do it from another angle
you don't want to just know how to do something from one perspective, you want to develop a 360° understanding of it
>>
>>3116450
Relax, it's just a word. "Serious" study to me means doing roughs for a commissioned work, or a final painting. It's just saying it's focused work.

One of the biggest hurdles for beginners is intimidation, and one thing you should work past as soon as possible. It's your paper, your pencil, own them, don't worry if what comes out isn't perfect. Everyone - me, you, everyone here - has produced a less than optimal drawing. Most students make a lot of mistakes, and go through stacks and stacks of paper. Anyone who tells you differently, don't listen to them.

I've tried to find paintings to study but a lot of the ones I found they literally just render out all the links. It seems massively time consuming. I've tried making a brush that does it for me but that also looks really artificial.

I was able to find the artist I was looking for. It was Gashi-Gashi. Recently, I had seen some sagas293 art, but couldn't put my finger on who I remembered doing it before. I like some of Gashi-Gashi's work because it looks unique, is heavily stylized, and has vibrant colors. I also like Skullgirls's blend of cartoon-y and anime-y look. There are also a bunch of distinct character designs too.

i too think men are ugly and rarely draw them. i started by only drawing women as well, and i didn't think the transition to learning men too difficult when i tried it out from ref and then after that i knew the adjustments i needed to make. they are just more bulky and boxy and utilitarian looking. also key bone differences and fat distributions in certain places.

Metal is very reflective of its environment, the reflection is squashed and stretched depending on the form of the metal object. On a cylindrical shape there will be stripes high in contrast because the environment's reflection is squashed with the form turning. The more a form is turning or the smaller a cylinder, that is the faster the planes of a form change, the more squashed the reflection will be and the 'stripes' will be thinner. Also check out some ref of different metal, the more polished it is, the sharper will be the reflection etc.

Most people that work by simplifying just do it intuitively. If you know how something is shaped in real life odds are you'll be able to figure out what forms you'll need to draw it. Unless you're deconstructing it into some sort of in-depth step-by-step (only worthwhile for teaching or something you'll draw a lot of, see: literally any how to draw anatomy book) that's all you need to know.
Beyond that it's just being able to draw the forms that you're going to use, so practicing perspective, ellipses, curves, basic shapes etc.

Could always mod a fountain pen with a g nib. Jinhao X450/X750 and some other ones are pretty cheap, and the Noodler's Ahab can be eyedropper converted. You might have to go with titanium coated g nibs (like from Zebra) if you don't want to deal with changing the corroded nib that often.
>>
>>3119798
I've tried this and it doesn't work. None of the feeds match up well with the g-pen nib, so you can't get the nib to sit properly, unless you want to get into feed modification.
>>
>>3119308
>starting scratch from imagination?

Don't do that, that's retarded. Use reference..
>>
>>3119840
Not even with adjusting the nib with pliers and/or heat setting? Granted, there is always some variance between pens (especially with cheap ass chinese pens like the Jinhaos), so some will be trickier to mod compared to others. Did you try to consult with online guides & videos to see if any of those help?
>>
What's the round brush equivalent in CSP?
>>
>>3119874
I also would like to know this.

The faded brush or whatever would be the spray can I think.
>>
>>3119869
I didn't want to use heat because I don't want to fuck up the tempering of the nib(it's small and will heat very quickly, it's very easy to fuck up), but no, I've not looked at online videos. Just by trying I could tell the shape of the nib was such that it wouldn't sit right on the feed, and trying to force it into the barrel ended with the nib splitting down the middle.
>>
>>3119881
This video has a bit less bullshit than most others I've found, but it seems a bit straightforward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN0p7zQtvHA
This dude mentions putting the nib into a cup of hot water to help soften it if you don't want to risk using fire. I tried this method after having already fucked around with a few of these mods already; it's alright.
What is the exact pen that you've attempted this with, though? Admittedly I have had more success with both the Konrad & Ahab from Noodler's, but the Jinhao X450s I messed around with did okay. There are flow issues with the latter if you rush through the process with both non-pigmented & pigmented inks. You'll have to "start it" with twisting the converter a bit or shaking the pen (w/cap on) slightly, or continue to tinker with it until you get it just to your liking.

It is all out of convenience, sure, so it won't be as "cheap" compared to actual dip pen tools. When you get it to work after all of that hassle though, it is fuckin' awesome.

Hi qna, bit of a personal problem. I have drawn for about 5 months trying to remain consistent every day.

I noticed over those 5 months that focus and anger go hand in hand with me. I think a long time ago when I was in uni, focusing on one task for long periods of time could feel good. But since then, I've noticed that I don't really enjoy focusing on anythign anymore. I get angry. I somehow naturally think of people who have left me or wronged me or blah blah. Particularly an ex of mine who dumped me last year. I don't know why drawing does this.

It's made me not look forward to drawing altogether, and I'm even starting to believe that it's just not for me.

What the hell's going on?

I haven't drawn in 6 months and I noticed that I am much happier and productive when I am not drawing. I've gotten to a point where I can only draw or look at other people's art if I am intoxicated or drugged, and even then it doesn't help. Drawing somehow draws all the darkness to the surface and avoiding art and music altogether has helped suppress it, no matter the urge to go back to the arts.

I know it's only a matter of time until I can't take it anymore.

If you mean like SAIs it would be the a watercolor brush but you'd have to download it. Also from what I tested CSP goes from dark to light in opacity too subtly compared to sai (probably because you need a very dark line when working with comics) so you have to change dens to a very low number to get the equivalent of a lighter mark on the watercolor brush in CSP.

Very important question, at least to me:

If I have predetermined linework, I can render the forms, add secondary lighting, rim lighting, and naturally feel out the 3dimensionality of the shapes.

But I cannot for the life of me put linework down myself.

I seize up and feel like every subtle curve of a muscle better be pixel precise or it's going to throw off everything, and it makes me feel like a paradoxical fellow because I thought the hard part would be rendering, but I can sort of get it down once I have a preestablished outline/edge to work off, but when I'm doing lines i'm erasing, redrawing, erasing, overshooting, zoomed in too close, it's art purgatory where i'm stuck in the initial sketch phase.

Flash is basically a subset of Illustrator, it's vector art with animation, tweening and other tech slapped onto it. If you want to do that kind of art, Adobe Illustrator is the king. There's also Corel Draw, Inkscape, and if you're on the mac, Sketch.

Flash as an artform is not really recommended. Back when I did Flash, I did my SVGs outside of Flash, in Illustrator, and imported them.

Besides, Flash is being deprecated (replaced) by Adobe Animate. But you're still better off using a real illustration program for vector art.

For straight lines, just hold down the shift key to constrain the line to an angle in increments of 45 degrees. There's a free plug in that lets you change that, but I forget what it's called, I don't use it.
Also, if you're using the brush tool, and click on the beginning point of a line, then hold down the shift key and draw the end point, it will draw a straight line between the points - it's great for drawing perspective lines.
>>
>>3117992

Well, maybe you will, if you finally escape puberty and get over the whole "boobs" thing, and can look at the human form without sexualizing it.

Where do I learn to make vector art?
>>
>>3121188
Yes, Flash is vectors. Or, more specifically, SVG file format, or Scalable Vector Graphics.

I learned Illustrator by just using the app, since version 1.0. I won't bullshit you, Illustrator has a steep learning curve, but it's an incredibly powerful program, once you master it. You can try some YouTube videos, I can't recommend any because I've never looked for any, or, if you have the funds, I use Lynda.com for a lot of personal training - I buy a yearly plan there, and use it for all kinds of stuff. I'm sure their Illustrator videos are top notch.

how do I get better at pixel art. I want to make a super small resolution game but my sprites don't look very good
>>
>>3124160
get graph paper, doodle something and then lay the pixels over the grid, that trick has worked for me at least. Or try drawing normally at a low res and then lay the proper pixel work
Also you're using 9x9 grids when all old system were 8x8
>>
>>3124286
honestly i think my issue is more getting in the detail to make it look believable

I'm too poor to buy a drawing tablet, so I mostly doodle on my phone - I primarily use is Sketchbook Mobile Express. The problem comes when I want to import pictures for tracing, there's always the negative space left behind (see pic related). Are there any Android drawing apps that have the import ability without leaving gaps like this? What else can I do?

How do I paint from a preset palette/swatch? Do I mix the colors like in traditional palette or do I go up and down the rgb square to get the additional colors I need?
>>
>>3125769
If you don't know, why are you using one?

Since you're an idiot, obviously the bright colors are highlights and the dark ones are for shadow. You can obviously mix if you want because digital can do anything. You're better off just learning color theory and then playing with colors in different light instead of using something you don't understand.
>>
Does anyone know the exact O-Ring needed to use on a Noodler's Ahab? The one on mine had snapped during maintenance, and the one sold from Noodler's is grossly overpriced for just the single o-ring. I bought a couple of 6mm OD (so 4mm) x 1mm ones as suggested from some forum after googling it, but that shit is quite small even when stretched - unfortunately it seems like a bust so far with getting it onto the pen. Going to keep looking in the meantime, but wondering if anyone from /ic/ had fucked around with something like this.
Should I just bite the bullet and get the direct shit from the company instead?
>>
Not a question, I thought this was hilarious.

>>
>>3125769
You're overthinking it. A digital palette can be a place to start, to mix with others, or to be applied as is. It's a way to keep certain colors pure, so you can go back and reference it. It's same as painting with paint - I can squeeze out some raw umber, and use it straight - or I can mix some white and use that. And then go back to the pure raw umber.

When I digitally paint, i set a layer in Photoshop as "palette", with my swatches, and lock it. I can reference it for pure color, or mix colors on another layer and use that. Or, if I'm blending, I'll use the option key while brushing (eyedropper tool) to pix up mixed colors to push colors in a gradation.

You can do whatever you want, to get the color you need. Swatches just retain the original, pure colors you're starting with.

Got a full time job on a AAA well known studio. They make photorealistic, photo bashed art and I lean more towards stylized, hand painted fantasy art.
Is it worth it? Spending maybe years working with a style that doesn't appeal to me or won't be useful in my portfolio? At the same time I need the experience to apply later on to studios that work with themes and styles I like more.

A tablet isn't as precise as any tool you can hold in your hand, when drawing digitally you will feel like you are missing a joint in your arm.
Digital media isn't empirical so actually using the tools and configuring them has a lot of guessing in it.
Techniques specific to digital will confuse you a lot at the beginning
>>
>>3127147
My guess was that you can kinda find equivalent to trad techniques in digital like blending? Probably some others, I suck so I wouldn't know.
But my main thought was that fundamentals wich are the most important transfer to any medium, like I'm pretty convinced someone that's good will be good anywhere.
I think I was wondering what specific techniques in paint, drawing/inking or any other technique, would not really exist in digital and would ask more learning to someone that only draws digitally. Not sure if clear, ESL.

is using stabilization good
>>
>>3127206
It's the default
Every computer has a stabilizer for your cursor
Only reason you would remove it is if you're playing OSU or a game that depends on your mouse
>>
>>3127160
Trad techniques never have a 1 to 1 digital equivalent, its always a thing of its own.
But the fundamentals are the same, always.

>Every computer has a stabilizer for your cursor
nani? how do i disable it?anyway i was meant the stabilizers in the art programs like cps or sai.
>>
>>3127223
its okey, you can't do the sames lines you do in traditional cuz of the lack of friction.

Even then if you needed perfect lines in traditional you use tools like rulers

I don't understand how much work I "should" be doing. I know that everyone is different and all that but I have no frame of reference at all. How many hours a day? Doing what?

If it wasn't obvious I'm a beginner. I've been mostly drawing lines, boxes etc.
>>
>>3127622
As much as you can anon, but try to keep it mindful is better having 2 hours a day of focused work than just mindlessly drawing all day.

Doingwhat ? depends on what you want. If you want to draw the human body then you study the anatomy of the body and do figure drawing.
>>
>>3127545
Use your shoulder more ? do streches, try not using your hand for other stuff( your phone, your mouse, etc)
>>
I'm honestly losing some fun and confidence in drawing because I can't trust my eyes anymore.
Even when people say things like "your anatomy and perspective is completely off" it frustrates me so much because I can't see those fundamental errors.
After a few days have passed, I am more able to pick up on the inconsistencies and disfigurations, but I still can't believe it always takes that long for me to see my work as it truly is.
Does this ever get any better, and what should I do?

I am having a difficult time understanding how to determine the placement of reflective highlights on objects. I am able to "fake it" but would like to know how to actually predict these shapes. Does anybody have advice?
>>
>>3128293
You just need to understand the physics behind it. Those are specular lights reflecting the lightsource itself, so you just gotta know where your light source is in comparison to you and half the angle. Every plane in light reflective enough with that angle with have a specular highlight.
Need a visual guide or do you get it now?
>>
>>3128293
Mastering Light and Form Dorian Iten, you'll get it.
I'll try to search for the part you need.
>>
>>3128293

Look up anisotropic highlights. 3d graphics have a lot to teach in this area since most of light's behavior has been mapped and codified
>>
Learning digital first and I have kinda noticed two ways people make stuff. They either draw lines then color them in or they paint colors in slowly till you magically see the shit. Should I be picking one of these to learn about or just do what ever the fuck I want as the situation demands?
>>
>>3128300
I do not understand what you mean by halving the angle between the viewer and the light source. A diagram visual guide would be incredibly helpful. Thank you!

>>3128303
>>3128321
I will look into both of these things, thank you.
>>
>>3128323

How do you want to paint ideally? Do you have a favorite artist?
>>
there is something that just misses the target when it comes to me understanding the process of getting better at drawing.

I just dont understand it. If i practise, will I eventually be able to draw however I want, whatever I want?

Is it something that I cant see until later? Does practising literally change the brain?

I guess it just baffles me that the future me can be drawing things the me right now would weep with joy over.

OK, this would have been a lot faster if I just drew it by hand instead of autisticially trying to figure out how to make vectors with perfect angles, but at least I know how to use use them now.

Arrows indicate the direction of the light source. Highlights appear where the planes are angled so they reflect the light source to the viewer. The line intersecting the path of the light is supposed to be the image plane and the last diagram is supposed to visualize how you have to take perspective into account.
>>
This might sound like a stupid question but...how do you approach drawing rain?
I know it depends on the style and techniques but what are some rough ideas to approach this with whatever method?
>>
>>3129800
Just draw lines with disconnects and also puddle effects.
>>
>>3129801
Yeah I guess. Probably also play with thickness and size of the drops/lines for distance
>>
Does anyone remember the dude who said he treats human body as a height map, drawing lines where there are steep slopes?
He had some real nice patterns on the female body and I forgot to put him into my inspo folder.
Pretty please
