from 2014 to mid 2015 it was doodling in notebooks and drawing space marines from imagination

late 2015 onwards I averaged around 1 hour a day. Some days I would not draw at all while on other days I drew for 5+ hours

I mostly doodle in my sketchbook, do life drawing sessions and the occasional photo study.

>>
>>3106112
That's good stuff the only problem is that I don't see much of an improvement mainly because your art from 2015 wasn't even bad to begin with. You might want to start reaching out into other areas other than still life or else you risk stagnating.

I suck because I do nothing but paint generic fantasy lanscapes.

But eh, at least I still paint something.
>>
>>3107138
I have to admit I only make a full drawing twice a year and doodle like once every two weeks.. I did have an internship with a local artist that was just me doing studied for 2 times a day every week for half a year.
>>
>>3107179
It's the style. More people have said that. I am happy with my rendering skills though. Now to not be a one trick woman portrait pony
>>
>>3107204
>>3107204
I love your landscapes.

Your girl drawing is like disturbingly worse than everything else though.
>>
>>3107181
1. Find drawings/paintings you like and actually look at them. Ask yourself, how did the artist do this? How can I replicate that myself? Then take that and try to incorporate it into your stuff.
2. Don't be afraid to use references. It's not cheating, it's not somehow lessening your worth as an artist. Also, ask for help. Shitposting aside, /ic/ can be quite helpful. I've posted everything in my progress picture in the draw threads and got valuable critiques and advice that I ended up incorporating into each one.
3. If you need to, step away from a project for a day or two. Don't touch it, don't look at, forget it exists. You can work on something completely different, or be like me and don't paint anything for a week. Then you can come back to that original piece with fresh eyes. Maybe you'll see something off that you never noticed before and you can fix it. Maybe, you'll find that your piece was shit the entire time and you just want to scrap the entire thing. I have a folder full of half finished crap that I have no intention of finishing.

Really, I don't know what to give you besides generic advice like this. It works for me. It probably won't work for you, but there you go.
Actually, the best advice I can give it to find what DOES work for you and just go with it. Also, keep practicing. DON'T be like me and paint once or twice a month.

You can get significant progress in a month if you already have some knowledge and just need to be pointed to the right direction.

The problem is that after that you'll feel like you hit a plateau since you're not improving nearly as fast.

Gonna be taking Anthony Jones' course on character design early 2018, so I hope I can make some mad gains, but also just so I can build a routine where I paint continuously. I find that every so months they'll be a gap where I don't do as much as I know I can, I wanna get out of that and study hard and start exploring story driven art work.

My main focus was to get better at drawing portraits, be it stylized or not so i spent that entire month making studies of portraits, i put like 150+ hours that month only making studies of portraits with a few side projects for fun, obviously my fundies on everything else is below shit-tier but this is how i decided to proceed about it althought It was only thanks to the fact that i had vacations before starting college so i had enough free time to put like 2-6 hours a day

Pic related is one of the studies i made, i know it has many flaws but thats why i keep doing studies

Althought i guess i have talent but in an useless subject, vidya, i was Challenger in LoL(League of Legends) and then i asked myself why i am wasting my time in vidya instead of something more fullfilling so i stopped playing and focused on art

Sorry for blog i guess

When i started i knew nothing about how to get better so instead of drawing mindlessly and fall for the meme of "just draw" i started lurking /ic/ for resources, the sticky was useful but its not as useful as people tend to say it is, i came to /ic/ to read about anything daily since i didn't even know what "shading" was exactly, i did draw 2-6 hours almost each day, i tried to make it a habit but i admit skipped every now and then, i saved my progress on a notepad and then a spreadsheet (thanks past anons), also instead of grinding ALL the fundies (full body) i focused on making portraits since it is what i like the most, the ratio was like 80% studies of portraits and 20% side projects for fun (anime-ish style). Hope this helps anon, if curious about anything else feel free to ask i guess
>>3109766

Well I suppose it just outlines the drama surrounding references. I'm pretty sure that most good artists have those figures or even take photos of themselves or get photos of others or use 3D references like DAZ or Designdoll or 3DSmax or something like that. And everyone has to get their influence from somewhere, and it was also alleged plagiarising. I'm glad that Altair loves her, even if she felt like she had no one to lean on when she was alive.

I literally can't tell which is the 2014 and which the 2017. There is no clear improvement or deterioration in any direction. Either you improved your palette and brushwork and got worse at drawing or vice versa among other stuff.

>>3109744
Nice progress. You got a good palette and I like the loseness, but I think you shoud get a more consistent anatomy and figure drawing skills if you want to get into those figure-based illustrations. Also, try to be more dynamic with your compositions. Do a couple of thumbnails at least before starting a "finished" illustrations

>>3110961

Clean but terribly boring linework The pencil-color background really is amateurish, and your coloring is really flat. Try to use diferent colors to have a bit of interest and hue changes and also give volume with the colors like you kind of did in the black hair in the bottom.
You have a good drawing and measuring sense I can see (unless you trace, in which case I suggest you to stop immediately), but you have a long way in your coloring skills

>>3110989
>i draw only when i get the mood, thats like once in a week or two
The definition of not making it, which I guess you have already been told by /ic/. If it's just for fun, go on , but that's a terrible progress if you hope to get somewhere. Just study more.

>>3111011
Kind of good progress for the short time you've been on.

>>3111068
Mad skills you got at rendering. If I could say something it would be to try to be more dynamic with the poses and camera angle. And also be carefull with the heads, you tend to flatten them.
Anyway, great work.

Mostly from imagination I guess, usually I have vague ideas and mess around until I feel like it. pic related used to be a subway cart intersection but now it's a city block.
As for how I learned perspectives, I couldn't put a word to it. I guess I just understood it without much effort, since it's really just a grid system. I had way more trouble learning human anatomy and adapting those knowledge to the animu artstyle. Also, the CSP perspective ruler can help correct some mistakes when I finish the sketch.

Do you have somewhere you post your work ?
>>
>>3119690
I generally don't cuz I'm also bad at a lot of other colors, dark blue and purple often look the same, bright greens and yellows are the same exact color etc.
The major issue in my pieces i've heard is that there's a lot of colors that pop out that I don't see, but I found a way to get past it, just open up the hue slider and shift all the colors to something you see a bit better, and the colors that you wouldn't see but others would should pop out and you can tweak them accordingly.
Keep at it anon you can do it, pic apparently says "fuck the color blind" btw lmao

What way do you guys practice drawing from imagination? Is it the obvious answer that you just keep drawing from imagination or do you have other ways?

I don't think that's true. It might be a common thing, but not a requirement. There are a lot of factors involved in "getting gud", like:
>Passion
>Commitment
>Talent
>Opportunity
>Vision
>Motivation
>Obsession

Art is a calling. It's also a spectrum. You can be a Sunday painter, or a professional artist. Or anywhere in between. You can simply love the process, or have a vision for great works.
Some people show aptitude early on. I did. According to my mom, that's all I did when I was a kid - draw. She could give me paper and crayons, and I'd sit and draw for hours. That only changed when I learned to read (I taught myself, a little, I could read books when I hit kindergarden), and I split my time between books and drawing. She was also an artist, and encouraged all of us to explore art - not as a "Get a job" kind of thing, but just to have fun with it.

But that's me. Someone else could have a completely different path - and does.

If you were compelled to write as a child, I would be interested to see if your calling is writing.

Not at all anon, I'm >>3107747 and I hated anything art related and never drew unless forced to in art class until I was 16.
Just make sure to get in that mileage early on in your art endeavor to catch up with the kids that have already spent a lot of time drawing

I keep on meaning to go back and add the last few years to this.
I feel like in some ways college stopped me from growing in certain aspects. I have spent the past three months trying to find time to practice everyday for at least three hours! I still have so many weak spots dammit.
