Shinji Kimura did some amazing background art for the anime TekkknKinreet. I always enjoy getting lost in his worlds. Personally I think the movie is worth watching for his art alone.

im glad that when i was a kid i attempted to make quake levels using that software (qED i think) that makes the level in the 3 split flat (front top and side) screens and a 3d screen based on those.
it really helped me out in drawing to think of it like that.

You are correct. Matte painting would only apply in an animated film if you were using flat painted BGs to fill out the distant parts of a 3D environment.
