Found a fun new sketch tool that sorta behaves like a ball point pen. But now I have absolutely no clue what to do, whether to make what I personally want, or to draw what my followers/brand wants. WIP. I got bored and figured I should practice my painting. I rendered a girl in graphite pencil and then laid down a quick first layer of the underpainting. It's real ugly and the values are way off, etc. and I didn't do the mouth at all because the lips will be a bright red so no sense putting green under it. It's just a start and it's gotta spend a little time in the ugly phase before it gets better but when it's finished she'll be a hot babe, blonde hair and blue eyes, fair skin.

There are bits of this that look kind of amateur. My guess is that you didn't have a good reference for the figures but copied most of the background from a photograph. That's one of the reasons I don't like references.
However, I am for some reason really drawn to this. I love it. The dimension on the brdige is great, and despite what the other anon said I really don't think you should have warm colors. The figure's haveing some warm on the is enough. The cool tones really set the mood.

Don't listen to what the other anon said. A lot of it doesn't apply to what you're drawing right now/current level.

Beginners like you should try to challenge yourselves with more complicated poses, and try avoid hiding the hands---'cause that's the first sign that you're a beginner. I feel that you are trying to make a showy character, in that case go for a more showy pose. Perspective/foreshortening is not necessary, but it can enhance your work. Going for a full body pic would work better too as for the composition. One at a time.

I like the composition and gamut map (perhaps you used a ref for this?), though the way you rendered it isn't very pleasant to the eyes. (Too much evidence of dodge tool) Might I suggest How to Render by Robertson?

With landscape framing such as this however, if your figures are this small don't make them "pop" too much. A darker background in contrast to a lighter foreground will be more pleasing to the eyes. Next time, finish a grayscale value composition of your picture before adding in the colours might be a better idea!

There were no references, but surprisingly the gamut map and composition were the things I was aiming for the most, so I'm glad that intent got across. (mirrors edge-esque white with certain highlights, in this case primarily orange)

Is there very much shared information between How to Render and Color and Light? I'm kind of low on money, so I'll just religiously reread through the latter again if it contains similar information.

There are some shared information, but the books are very different. Gurney's book (general tips) is easier to digest compared to Robertson's (used for some specific instances on which you will need to check the page now and then) IMO.

Robertson's book is not necessary, but will do well in your case as you render geometrical objects a lot... And that's pretty much his area of specialty. The book is a chore to go through though. You might want to check the art book thread!

If you focus more on Outdoor/nature/street painting then Gurney is good enough. Science fiction stuffs and original composition is Robertson's forte (granted, some info might not be useful but some will and they WILL help you).

The shading is to soft and the anatomy is terrible, Make shading more clear, follow the eye's reflection and fix that nose, it makes no sense that the nose is straight up front while the rest of the face is moving upwards.

Left hand is also fucked up which is strange since right one is passable.

Over all, solid anatomy but practice your tablet drawing skills blend shadows more, the lighting seems correct is the execution that is very rough use more contrast, reduce chicken scratches.
