I like this! The design's lighthearted and fun, which is a nice change of pace from the more serious video-game-concept-art-type of illustrations.

I feel like this one is just a little unfocused as a character piece, mostly just in the distribution of details! With a character, most people would be drawn more to the face, but my eye keeps being drawn to the belt along his chest and the stitches in his shirt. I suppose that his face is just a little underdeveloped from a design standpoint, so the busier details distract from it a bit! I'm not trying to say that the personality of the character has to come from the face or anything, but it should have more of a focus, I think. Might also just have to do with the rendering/value distribution, the belt across his torso feels a lot sharper and better defined than anything else in the image.

Great stuff, though! Certainly makes for an decent portfolio piece,

I was just doing this as a quick warm up and when I realized I was already painting this one...

So the linework came out really rushed, but I took more time than I wanted in the colors... Anyone have some kind of tip on what I could look for to represent metal if I don't wanna go too much in the rendering? I would like to have stopped this painting some steps back, but the metal was looking really dull so I kept doing more layers.

This was a drawing I did outside and then turned it into a painting. I knew I was going to do it on a smaller canvas (18"x24"), and in the past I had problems where I would cram too much onto smaller canvases, and I'd end up having to suggest trees and leaves and rocks with very few brushstrokes. A lot of my earlier paintings only work from a distance because they are so claustrophobic and small. 18"x24" might be big for some people, but I paint with bigger brushstrokes and thicker paint so it's better for me if I "thicken" my subject, and make it more about larger, solitary objects.

It's kind of similar to how Philip Guston would paint later in his life, but overall I think my work is a bit "thinner" than his chunky hands and hooded figures.

should focus more on drawing buildings
should be to scale with figures, think of the height/width of doors/windows. how high the ceiling of each floor should be. you should have an idea for the interiors, foundations, functions... why does your door open outwards? Think more about design, do research on houses, exterior wall cladding, roof tiles. What you're doing is essentially symbol drawing right?

Nice rendering.

Watch the jawline and ear area (ear is too small and should be a bit tilted, moved higher up.)
It's also lacking some lighter values (see image for places where you can put them), I'd use a more gritty brush for them because otherwise it might make the head look too smooth/plasticy.

>>

Nice color and rendering, but some things you should have fixed before rendering so much:

- Her stare and head position is really awkward. I dunno what reference did you use, but it's uncanny like other anon said. Also, maybe her long neck is contributing to this.

- Her torso is too long and wide, which make her arms and legs look short in comparison.

- She's out of balance. A little more and it'll look like shes falling.
>>
>>3100611
could you elaborate on the anvil looking uneven?
also yeah i pretty much ignored perspective altogether

regarding your piece, the legs are a bit small in comparison to the torso, but the rendering's real nice

Thank you, I focused on the face and also fixed some stuff on the body. I hope her face looks better now. I noticed that the eyes lacked proper drop and form shadows, the eyelashes were a bit too prominent for the perspective and finally the highlight were kind of odd

>>3100703
Thanks for the feedback

You should try to respect 2 point perspective at least at a very basic level the anvil looks uneven because the lines don't seem to converge due to the lack of perspective it appears to be collapsing/melting, try looking at some pics or better yet study the photo of one, you will notice that its lines if they are traced far beyond the screen seem to converge to a very far point

>critique welcome
Most people, when painting, underestimate just how dark shadows on our faces and our clothing can be, so they make it too light. I think that is the case here. It's a great start as an underpainting. I say glaze over it with a handful of thin layers of color and it will be quite good.

use reference. if you cant find reference then photobash one. If you can't photobash one, use 3D models. If you can't do any of those then take a picture of yourself or a girl friend....or your mother like RossDraws. Work on the pose and sketch longer before rendering.

>>
>>3100611
Proportions are off. Try flipping the image, but ideally go get some refs like anon suggested.

Your lighting is inconsistent and it's breaking some forms and the illusion of depth. Her right upper arm for example is lit in a way that makes it look like it's parallel to the image plane instead of coming forward towards the viewer.

You've created an optical illusion with her legs, the rock and the ground plane. Looking at her left leg and the rock, you can infer where the ground plane is. However, her right thigh is parallel to the ground, her lower leg is vertical and her toe extended to reach the ground plane, implying that the ground is much lower for her right leg compared to her left leg and rock. Basically a huge height discrepancy for two groups of forms near each other to reach the same ground plane. Rock needs to be taller or the right leg needs to bend to accurately reflect the ground plane.

Hands and feet are exceptionally bad. Get refs for those.

Pretty sure the horizon should be much higher based on the angle we're viewing the figure. Actually, the more I look at it the more it feels like you've handled every part of the figure as if that is seen at eye level. A proper box construction and/or references would fix most of your issues.

i'm bad at explaining, so here's a process gif. hope it helps.

i use a hard brush with low opacity to indicate the turning of forms, an airbrush for softer valuegradations, and lots of blending to simplify values and to keep things from looking splotchy.

There's not much to critique because basically everything is wrong, I don't want to be mean but you aren't learning and you don't know how to draw. Read the sticky and improve, otherwise don't post drawings and ask for critique when you know you haven't worked enough to draw something worth criticising.

Look at the reference and paint what you see. You're not observing it at all and just making stuff up.
>>
>>3102707

If you're going to work black and white; convert your reference to black and white first. Don't paint from a white background when doing a study, drop in a background of similar to value to your subject to let you more accurately judge values. Also get some taste.

anatomy of the body is weird. especially the big head compared to the body, and the way you just round out a line from the chest to the hips don't show any beliveable form of the body. Try to define hips and ribcage and some muscle. Also elbow wrists and fingers. As for rendering it's pretty swell, but the chese and tomato slice don't look wet enough. Wet things have a very sharp highlight, try looking at the sun reflecting upon water. same goes for the eyes.
Don't be too overwhelmed by the ammount of listed things, I've still got miles ahead of me myself. Remember to take one thing at a time Anonymous.
>>
>>3102498
You're missing the ears (if you're drawing a human), and you should try to make a bigger forehead, round out the top of the head. The neck looks a tad long, try to make a transition into the shoulders next time. Also you've made the nose stand out way too much by shading it but nothing else. If you wanna be lazy I'd sugest also shading cheeks or ears for a "I'm cold" effect. Expression's a bit dull too. Maybe try going wild with some exaggereated emotions next time you draw. :)
Happy drawing anonymous!

you got some talent, that's why people shit on your stuff. The body shows your natural talent, and it is very interesting, but when you do faces, hands and feet, your brain interrupts with this shit image of how you think it should look, which is like a generic shitty character. You're better than that and you should make your brain take a quantum leap as to how it imagines faces, hands and feet. You could do much better. Faces don't look like your picture at all. And that's why you get uncanny valley, because you're drawing a generic character but with a talent for realism.

could people stop regurgitating this shit? Most of the time people have muddy colors just because they don't know shit about basic color theory and they're mixing different hues that fuck up the saturation levels, saying "stop using black for shading" helps fucking no one
>>
>>3102630
thank fuck i've been looking for this for ages
>>
>>3103927
its more a traditional painting rule. Blues and browns generally make better blacks than actual black paint, but limited palettes with black are fine, i use them all the time.

For digital absolutely use black. Like. That's the point of the whole fucking thing, is that digital is painting with light, and traditional is painting with dark, so for digital you should be pushing blacks as far as they can go to create the illusion of depth on a backlit screen.
>>
>>3103923 do you paint anything other than colored spheres? how is the fabric coming along anon?
>>
>>3103941
idk havent painted fabric in a while. just now getting back into still lifes. im going to be painting a lot of fruit for the next month so buckle in mother fucker
>>
>>3103929
ok at first I thought you had no idea what you're talking about but actually you just missed the point and saying "blacks" instead of "darks", when we say black we mean the actual color black, as in 0% saturation 0% light on the brush to do shading, that's absolutely not what you're supposed to be doing. You should generally just stay away from black unless you have a reason to
>>
>>3102707
you need to get reasonably good at drawing first before you can paint, there's nothing wrong with being line reliant and a lot of master painters rely on their drawing when they paint over it. When you paint you'll keep losing and finding your drawing til you don't need it anymore, that's how it works a lot of the time

just in terms of shape design, the waterfountain clashes with everything else you've established in the picture and it also has lots of areas of contrast that make it feel like a focal point. the trophy is creating tangents with the cracks and the piece of wall in front of it; the piece of rebar directly left of the water fountain is also creating a tangent with the wall. maybe double check the proportions on the bent leg and both of her arms. subjectively, i feel like positioning her head more dynamically would help emphasize the overall motion of the character.

this is a very strong piece and overall i like it quite a bit, it just needs a bunch of minute tweaks to make it really good.

her face does not have appeal. The left eye is bigger than should be . The nose is really big, its not wrong, but not beatiful either. When you separate the values from background and foreground, try to giver her some focal points, with more contrast, to make everything more interisting too. And use hue variations to create mood, shadows more cool, stuff like that. Your colors look a little muddy.

fucked up face and good feet is a weird combo, lol, i think the rendering is also a bit ugly, i think, even if you're doing shiny girls that you need a soft porcelain quality to the skin for maximum appeal. your flesh is too fleshy, in other words. i like some of the modelling though, you seem to be more comfortable with hard body parts like knees then you are with the soft parts. the hair is insipid, not ugly or anything, but not good, same with the eyes, although less so. overall a very neat job.

Thanks for the critique! I'm always glad when someone take the time to comment some insightful things. :)

>fucked up face and good feet is a weird combo, lol

HAHAHAHAHAHA

If you see the process video you'll realize this is not the worst face I can come up with. I should had searched for reference of at least inspiration before going on, but I was anxious to try some rendering techniques.
Overall my female faces are really bad, I should do a bunch of pages of that to sort it out and probably go back to draw some full body models from reference.

About the skin, I understand what you're saying, but can't figure out yet what to do about that...

You nailed there on me being more comfortable with hard body parts, I think I'm way better drawing males.

About the hair and eye: I was lazy with both and didn't spent any time on those after coloring, but for my excuse I was really done with that piece. hehe

I tried applying some of what the others suggested by separating the foreground from the background using atmospheric perspective. I also darkened the shadows and added occlusion shadows to increase the contrast in the foreground and make the forms more legible. I think you painted her head well, so I tried increasing the proportions of her body to match her head. I hope this helps man!

>About the skin, I understand what you're saying, but can't figure out yet what to do about that...

Actually taking a zoomed out look at it I think one of the problems is that I don't have any variation on the base skin tone. I should have done at least some gradients on the legs, arms and maybe different tones or maybe a darker tone on the face, not sure...

beg here. Could I get your guys' input on this? I don't really know what I'm doing with the background. Also not sure how to bring the values to match together with the scenery.
>>
>>3105977
>canvas wasn't filled enough without the outlines
what's that mean?
>>
>>3105980
means it looked empty. There was a 5th apple i had to the left of the pot but for compositional concerns i left it out, and as a result when I'd finished painting everything in it the objects weren't sufficiently filling the canvas. Composition was fine, it was just too subtle. I had thinner outlines so I made them thicker until i thought it looked like the space was filled enough.
>>
>>3105980
if i could've finished it without the outlines i would've but they were necessary.
>>
>>3105984
ah, i see. thanks for explaining!
>>
>>3105883

Thank you for the paintover !! I can see much more clearly the mistakes i was making. I guess i wasn't being bold enough with the values on the background. And i really didn't notice the problems with the head proportion, so thanks again man !
I will be sure to improve it and post it again !!
>>
>>3105954
>outlining
>>
>>3106043
outlining is a simple, easy solution to compositional problems in a painting. what exactly is the problem with them. it's a lot easier than doing the whole painting again, and if you do them right them can look good and not be distracting.

correct me if I'm wrong but isn't every other thread on /ic/ "How do i do lineart"? And "lineart" isn't even a functional use of outlining. That's literally just people having a "style", not correcting mistakes. If I can avoid it I don't do outlines, because it means I failed with the size of the objects on the canvas, but they have a use every once in a while.

Practice gesture.
>>
>>3106471
That orc's arm is attempted to swing with his arms behind him but his torso is not twisted along with it. If you were to do that in real life you'd dislocate your shoulder. The arm in front is awkward because it's too straight as if it's punching something. The stance is also off because the feet are pointing too outwardly which is a poor stance for balance. the front feet should at least be pointing more forward.

I'd also assume that the knight would have a more dramatic reaction with his shield up closer to his head, knees bent, and his sword further to the right of him as if he's about to swing.

Is there any real benefit of doing these portrait sketches that's comparable to something like studying fundamentals. It's not really clear what style you're pursuing, but yea, there's enough freedom and energy which might be fun to work with.

This picture is going to be about a girl born with no arms on a quest to take the place of her younger sister who is to be sacrificed to the gods as she, the eldest, was not worthy due to her deformity. Here we see her meeting the gods in their mountain dwellings. I've only drawn one of them so far and I think I'll squeeze in the others in the background. The multi-headed goddess is plucking heads from the river with a large pointed rod and she keeps the ones she likes the most to add to herself and her wisdom

>>3107875
Not too bad. I don't know if it's intentional or not but I like the fact that she's not overly attractive. She looks kindof ugly, like the character should be imo. Your rendering seems good so far but I can tell that rendering is starting to affect her proportions and features. Her nose, for example, is clearly facing us yet her face is clearly angling away from us. I'd taper her neck a little bit toward her shoulders, right now she looks like an action figure with a neck attached to ball and socket joints.

I'd do a paintover to give better advice in general but I haven't got a tablet right now
>>
>>3108597
Sounds like an interesting story. The linework looks really nice so far, however the composition needs some work. I'm not sure what you plan to do behind her but I think that we look past her to the left, top, and right too much, she's not framed in, just floating. Our eyes are too encouraged to look around her.
I'm not sure if I'm describing this correctly, there's a picture of a girl sitting on the beach in the Loomis Illustration or figure drawing book on a rock, and it illustrates this point by saying the girl shouldn't be in the center of the composition and an empty horizon to the top, right and left of her.
