I suck ass at drawing but I know symbol drawing when I see it. You draw what you think a mouth might look like, not what it actually looks like. Same with the eyes. Makes it look a lot more cartoony than intended.

I know people who purposefully smudge as a technique to shade. Don't.

Since most people are giving you shit.. The form of the second one definitely registers as a more realistic face, but your technique is still lacking. Do a lot of reading on threads that talk about form, realism, DRILLS. Just keep drawing, and not just faces. Draw everything and anything, and try to do it accurately. Skill comes before expression.
