TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So I'm trying to git as gud as Tetsuya Nomura (Square Enix artist and designer) before jumping unto something much harder.
I really really really want to, but I kinda need some help. Pic related. I'm trying to flesh out and trace his drawing of Auron (FFX character) but I don't understand his anatomy. Maybe I just don't get the perspective of the arms? Either way, I would be grateful if someone could try and trace it and show me.

(Sorry for large picture)

figure drawing for all it's worth is the perfect book for you
>>
>>3094919
A lot of beginners overestimate how important books are. I would say they're quite important, but you can learn all you need to from just studies (it's in the name anyway). Just doing studies and internalizing what you're painting and transferring that knowledge to your personal work will do more than a book ever will. If you're dyslexic there's even more reason to, I think.
>>
So I'm lost on learning observation drawing.
I understand that I need to draw what I see, but how do you exercise that?

I've read into enveloping, seeing large shapes, and such but every time I do, I feel that I don't realize the size is off until I've put in more features of the subject.

Basically, I can't plan to put the subject in a correct "frame" and I want to learn how to tackle this problem.

I meant it was the book for you as a lot of the things (at least at the start of the book) can be done with "look at what he does, do the ones already there, and then do your own"
>>
Do you always have to make a grid/skeleton for everything you draw? Like, a quick look at Picarto tells me that everybody there of all skill levels make a quick background skeleton for everything, and they make those quicker and more detailed than I could learn to do in months. It's all so complicated-looking; I just wanna draw cool, cartoony shit.

>>
>>3094991
I didn't respond to you.

Well, with the position I am in as mentioned above, and having played hundreds of hours of Souls, I can only guess a few things
>shapes are okay, kind of bony shoulders?
>decent shadows, kinda subtle enough, you can tell that it's coming from above
>why is the lower half not shadowed almost at all?
>a lot of it needs softer/more symmetrical lining, like the sword
>the eyes and nose are pretty fucked up, but it's hard to draw small details, assuming that's on an entire A4
>hair actually looks pretty decent, beard too
>inconsistent direction of shadows now that i look at it, but from the little i know, i just like seeing certain shadow "types" to be drawn in the same direction, like all of the shadows on clothes to be in one direction at all places, different direction on skin, different on weapon etc
>the mountains look kinda goofy

That's all I can think of, as a total beginner at about your size.

I can't draw worth shit but I do like coloring in random lineart as a zen exercise with Photoshop while listening to podcasts and such.
I use a channel fuckery macro to extract the lineart, then I fill in the background and do passes with the dodge and burn tools for the shading.
Is there some trick to this that I'm unaware of? The colors don't always look right, and when I tried to do the shading with the paintbrush and a handpicked darker/lighter color it ended up looking even more wrong.
>>
>>3095056

Go color popular R34 instead. It'll be way more appreciated, trust me, you might even build a reputation as long as you don't get on the original makers' nerves.

Working through my first drawing book and it wants me to do blind contour drawing. This is supposed to get me to see things instead of drawing whats in my head.

Is this just a temporary exercise or is drawing contour blind a real skill I should focus after I grow out of symbol drawing?

I should've been clear. I have problem with the front symmetry. It's so uncomfortable to draw.

I can draw other angle that doesn't require symmetry without discomfort but I'm not perfect at it either.

But thanks for making me draw.

I'm not any better than you so feel free to ignore this but I think you're symbol drawing the facial features a lot. Also the side mouth in the first picture is kinda weird looking even if it's basically an anime staple. So I don't draw much, but have been practicing on and off, and I thought I'd ask here.
This is my second attempt at shading and first time painting. A little NitW thing.
Now, a little disclaimer, the pic doesn't have highlights or anything, I did it back in March and just gave up a day or so later to work on more important things for school and just in life, so it's like, half done if even. (and i've hardly drawn since :<)
So what's the damage and what should I do to help?

yeah, look at the date my man 2009. Haha, man that brings up memories. Also yeah he was suposed to have 4 wings, but i didn't draw the wings or arm for the other side becuase at the time i didn't know how. As for the mouth. I had a hard time understanding lips and facial anatomy (still do sometimes, espacially with the wierd angles).

>>3095461

>>3094789
>>3095509
Combination of disproportional features such as gigantic nose, and necks as thick as the head. All features look exaggerated. It shows lack of study of heads, while insisting on drawing your impression of what heads look like. You need to study references of heads, necks, and shoulders from different angles. Study the skull and spine. Pay attention to proportions. Also use handsome or beautiful faces. Try to remember what they look like and make those your default face to draw.

I don't know if I would study Nomura's work, especially as a beginner. His anatomy is VERY dramatized and it's a style similar to anime/manga where proportions are purposely incorrect. He makes a lot of aesthetic decisions over correct ones which would be harmful to you as a beginner to practice.

You are much better studying some real humans and real forms, and then referring to Nomura's work when you want to start developing a style of some kind.

Critique all around the board here:
First, your linework is bad but mostly because you lack line confidence. Use the magic of digital to your advantage, draw broad, strong strokes instead of feather lines. If the line is wrong, ctrl-z and do it again. Strong lines will help significantly.

Anatomy is bad, but not the worst I've seen. You'd benefit from studying loomis and practicing gesture/figure drawing of real people.

Now for coloring digitally, refer to ctrl+paint in the sticky. The most glaring issue with your colors are how bland they are. Lay down some nice strong colors and shade with color, not black. I'll try to give you an example if I get a free second. It often helps to pick a pallet first instead of constantly darkening+lightening the base color.

You also need to study how light behaves in general--you're doing "pillow shading" in which you just darken the edges of the objects instead of using a stationary light source.

I hope this helps you a bit, keep it up.

Aw my cat had infected wounded on his neck in the same spot when I found him. He was just a kitten too, and some other cat beat him up.

I think you should have really pushed the expression, pull the ears down and snarl the upper mouth. A lot of pillow shading going on, highlights in the wrong places.
>>
>>3096215
Thank you for taking the time to critique. It definitely does help, and it's good to have someone be able to vocalize what can be improved about the art in question.

Can I ask what you mean by strong colours though? Strong as in more saturated colours? If you have time for an example it would be greatly appreciated.

Okaaaay, sorry for the wait! Got lost in thoughts while I was in the shower.

First off, your drawing is more western-esque than eastern (anime) due to the way you have drawn it (I would say "style" but I'm fairly certain you don't have one yet, no offense). Proportions are lackluster, and your anatomy is waaaay off (for example, her nipples look like small red sombreros, kek. Facial expression is off as well, same with coloring/shading.

I suggest you stick to simple sketches (no coloring, shading and lineart) and slowly improve your drawings.
You need to study anatomy, and look up references and try to copy/trace them. In your picture you went for an ahegao expression, should you should search it up and study how to do it properly (pic related among many others)

And at last but not least
>Read the sticky
(it contains everything you need to know on how to improve your art)
Keep at it!
>>
So I wanna draw porn. Studying female anatomy and dicks is the way to go right?

>>3095062
Naw I don't really go to these threads, I just happened to stumble by, and thought your stuff was fuckin' A.
>>
>>3095623
chicken scratch is bad because you won't improve your confidence (ability to draw lines and shapes on the page like you want them to look)

trust me, you want to be able to make long, flowing strokes thay capture the contours instead of some scratchy clusterfuck

if you draw digitally ctrl+z is your friend, and don't be afraid to re-try a line if it comes out wrong since the failed attempt will function as a guide of what not to follow
>>
>>3095924
look at some reference sheets by furry artists of digitigrade legs

generally the upper leg will be the same as a human's in length, the lower leg will be shorter and angled backwards, and the foot will angle forward into the toes which bend flat at the carpals

draw rhythm lines as well and think of how you would balance if your legs were like that, they should be straighter than that if they're standing up right and weight should be distributed equally across their central axis

>>
>>3096774
Is this done with a tablet or a mouse?
do swift strokes instead of dragging your line along
Practice using your shoulder/elbow to draw, not your wrist and fingers.
>>
>>3096774
>drawing squares in a single line
for what purpose
don't do unnecessarily difficult exercises, the half-gains from them don't outweigh the full gains from exercises you'll actually apply in drawing

The ear size
The part where you shaded everything the same value and made the face look flat
The mouth, eye and nose shapes

first of all stop being a bitch, if you can afford and order a tablet then you can draw a fucking equilateral rectangle properly

it doesn't matter how you hold your stylus or if you rest your hand on the surface, all that matters is you're making strokes with the entire arm and not the wrist

traditional media matters more with how you hold your utensil, pens should be held at a 90 degree angle for ink flow, graphite obviously provides different line weights based on incline, etc but if you stick to digital you can just tell those old geezers to kill themselves

my best advice is what I already said: to stop being a whiny bitch and draw more squares. dont just mindlessly shit on the canvas, plan each stroke and execute it swiftly. hover over the tablet amd try tracing the soon-to-be line several times before actually trying to make it, and no you dont have to do this with every line you ever draw but just when youre not confident

go read fun with a pencil, check out drawabox, or watch proko on youtube for all of this and more on how not to be retarded when approaching drawing
