why couldn't ancients into 3d?
>>
They could.
>architecture
>statues
>pyramids
>>
>>3094134
I meant rendering forms.
>>
>>3094132
it was a hard thing to understand, plus most ancient art is religious and had to follow a set style, where you get less restricted pictures you usually do see 3dness, foreshortening and lighting to depict form and that sort of thing.
>>
>>3094142
I meant before the Romans tho. Because I would think even a caveman could draw a realistic represntation of something. What is the limiting factor really?
>>
>>3094144
I want to clarify I'm not saying art is easy. I'm just saying if you have a caveman with a certain innate talent then why can't he draw something at a 3/4 view? Furthermore wouldn't this naturally artistic caveman want to create realistic representations of his experience? I'm not saying its alien genome enhancements but.
>>
>>3094147
well i mean, look at childrens drawings, they can't 3/4 either, someone had to teach them, perhaps at one point 3/4 was like a genius level break through, like the wheel or what have you
>>
>>3094153
yeah but the problem is even if you're a fucking doggo you see shit in 3/4s all the time. The development of music and literature is understandable because those things are abstractions but art involves representing reality. Is photographic memory not a thing?
>>
They weren't as autistic as you.
>>
>>3094165
3/4 is also an abstraction, it doesn't doesn't seem that way to you because you're a modern man
>>
>>3094167
isn't uncanny abstraction like the hallmark of autism?
>>
>>3094174
I'm a modern man so I also listen to a lot of music that utilizes the harmonic series but I understand there were missing revelations. Another way of looking at it is that someone in Ancient Egypt could look at the heiroglyphs and think "does this really look anything like what I see?" and since the answer is no he'd try to do better. What would he compare existing music and text against tho?
>>
>>3094175
Nah, that would be photorealism.
>>
>>3094182
wrong
>>
>>3094184
Romantic realism is autistic too.
>>
>>3094180
people weren't trying to recreate the image, just the objects, they weren't trying to create the illusion of 3 dimensions. think of them as diagrammatic if you like.

even sight as an image was a concept that needed to be developed at some point.

as i said, you're a modern man, the idea of sight, images, foreshortening, light reflecting from surfaces, all this sort of stuff is abstract. the experience of a human is not the experience of sight and images, it's the experience of a complete world-view.

it's not a dissimilar concept to betty edwards' symbol drawing.
>>
>>3094195
I think you just blew my damn mind
>>
>>3094134
It's even weirder since these guys were pretty fucking good with maths n geometry n shiet and perspective is basically a math thing, and pretty damn obvious one when you're aware of it.
>>
>>3094132
IIRC most of these are meant to tell a story, symbolizing movements and whatnot, hence the side view and lots of similar looking figures in different poses

it was more than likely a stylistic choice that was going around at the time, like a certain artist that everyone loved that had the egyptian equivelant of a mad popular tumblr. egyptian /ic/ would have hated it.
>>
>>3094928
>this
ancient /ic/ hated this shit
>>
In ancient Egypt, they were not trying to re-create what they were seeing. They drew some part of the body in profile and the other in the front because it was a better way to see the different body parts. For instance the chest is more details when drawing in front. But the foot are drawn in profile
>>
>>3094132
anime
>and they believed the soul was in the heart so they have the chests facing for that reason sillies
>>
>>3094928
this shows they can draw the body from all sorts of angles, maybe they just had a thing for the human face in profile?
>>
>>3095128
Maybe it was rude to look someone in the eye.

Humans have always had staring problems you know.
>>
>>3094132

Their society stayed the same for like 2000 years because they refused to change their way of doing things.
>>
>>3094928
These aren't specific individuals, they're like matchstick men, just a way to churn out people-like images. A bit like the animals in their hieroglyphs.

Oh look it's the weekly "/ic/ has never taken an art history class in their life" thread.

These things are mappings or recordings of thier knowledge and beliefs, they work great for that so Im not sure they "couldnt" into 3D, just for this they didnt need to

The Fayum portraits were a bit later though, no?
>>
>>3095344
We already know that Romans could grasp the 3 dimensions in their visual arts, anon was asking about more ancient populations (specifically the Egyptians).
>>
>>3094928
was egyptian art the anime of it's time?
>>
>>3095915
like i said early in the thread it was religious art and had to follow set designs, they're basically pictographs . it'd be like if the little guy in a cross-walk light was a carefully rendered portrait of a man crossing a street, not very helpful.
