What exactly happened to CA.org?

This is a red board which means that it's strictly for adults (Not Safe For Work content only). If you see any illegal content, please report it.

Branching this off of >>3081745 for a more focused discussion around one particular topic.

There seems to be a number of people on /ic/ who remember CA from it's earlier years (I'm guessing you are now in your 30s, oh boy).

What the fuck happened to that place?

Why did Massive Black close their doors on their early attitude when they had tutorials, career advice, etc?

If anyone has any elaborate info on this, it would be much appreciated.

There's more than one thing that killed it off.
>several community dramas leading to mass exoduses
>a screwup where the artists who did the tutorials weren't getting paid, some of them being owed 10's of thousands
>lots of shit from Jason Manley, some of it true some using him as a scapegoat
>the industry growing too big for forums to be viable and social media coming into the picture
>bad moderating (censorship)
>once enough pros left the community it went to shit
>>
>>3089947
Do you remember any details around any of these things? The drama, what kind of shit from Manley, etc
>>
Got curious myself and found a couple goodies, thought I'd share:

Social Media was a mistake.
>>
Here's a better question: why should we care that it's dead? Everything good about it was pay-to-play to begin with, and the forums were a shitty platform anyway.

It's important to know the reason, to help prevent something similar from happening in the future.

Plus it's interesting as fuck.

Thanks for this anon.

The landscape has changed significantly. It's fragmented as all fuck it's hard to keep track of shit today. There is no chance of a "one forum to rule them all" at the moment.

There is and it's called Artstation. They'll go for opening up a forums section at some point. At least I hope they do.

>Site went down more often
>attachments being deleted or lost
>Jason Manley didn't pay the tutorial artists, including his own friends, did a lot of things just for money apparently
>ratio of noobs to pros got worse and worse, and less interaction between them
>after another Manley thing? public exodus of a few pros and high up admins

At least Jason refunded my ticket for the workshop. Those THU guys have gone straight to fill that gap in the market, idk how useful those things are other than networking though.

Artstation is a replacement for CGHub, not for ConceptArt. They tried to put Permanoobs into that spot but the initial spark of that place faded quickly, idk how many people stuck with it.
>>

I doubt they will. It almost seems as if they're actively avoiding it because you'd think by now they would have opened one up.

Maybe they see it as a relic of history, plus we all know how unruly and fucked up forums can get.

final nail was the site switching templates, a new social media style "wall" that got flooded with furry porn gifs and "hacked"

I gotta say the jobs forum worked well, you could always get legit bites by bumping your thread, that really helped me through early freelance, not sure theres a jobs forum that works as well now.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
