Well I guess yeah, but I still need to sort the folder(s) by animal types and edit some images that have huge file size for no reason. Also need to visit other boards again since it's been a while so there's new images to be found and then I'll need to search for sites that specialize in animal images so I can further improve my collection. My upload speed is also 40kb/s and the folder is 1.12gb so this will take a bit, I'll edit the huge pics, zip it and upload if you don't care about the above?

More rough poses practice from imagination (mostly). I'm building from the torso out. I did try to work with different perspectives but I went back to practice the basic first.
>>
>>3088627
I think you did really good in capturing the movement of the pose.
Forms are a mess in the torso area though, hard to see what is going on. You need to distinguish more clearly between chest and hip and where they overlap.
Do some Bean drawing maybe....

Crit me
>>
>>3088720
Pretty good! I think you're ready for the next step, with more detail, polish, and rendering, and starting finished drawings. Your next step is lighting the pose, so start playing with that.
>>
PDFs of books put me to sleep. What do
>>
>>3088627
Move on to 25 and 1 hour poses. Every figure drawing class I ever took, 10 minute poses were gesture/warm-up. I think you get the point of the 10 minute, and are doing it well - so move up to the next level of longer drawings. Take the reference, do a 10 minute to warm up, then do a longer drawing, and start working on lighting, rendering, and more polish and work on the contours, forms and detail.
>>
>>3088651
First off, work bigger, or use smaller lines. It feels bulky, and the linewidth is hiding your weaknesses in drawing the form.

I think this piece is above your skill level, to be honest. Your lack of anatomy is pretty evident. You're trying to draw something that should convey movement, lithe forms and flowing lines, and it's overall kind of dumpy.
Also, breasts don't work like that, even fake ones. One form of reference you should be looking at is pictures of women swimming underwater - the body will react differently underwater.
I would hold off on color, and work on your forms, and your anatomy, if you insist on moving forward. You're going to be frustrated anyway, because this is above your level, but you can minimize that by focusing on the foundations of the piece.
There's nothing wrong with not being ready for a finished piece like this. Patience is important, and owning and embracing that you have more groundwork to go, before attempting something like this. If you spend time around this forum, this is a common thing - people jump into work that's too advanced for them, and they get stuck and frustrated by the results.

I'm very thankfull for the critique. You're right, I'll study some more before going back to this piece

In the meantime, I decided to pick up this sketch from last week and start the painting.
I'm painting with only earth/brown tones first to set up my volumes, then I'll apply colors.

I'm a bit afraid of the hair, though. I'm not sure about how to paint that. Also the mirror in her hand (yeah, that's a mirror) - I'm looking at some mirror references and it's still complicated

Any tips?

POsting to /beg/ again. Maybe somebody can give something of an answer.

Hopefully this thread can get some gears turning.

Tryna get more into composition, I'm wanting to learn more

What I know:
>>Western audiences read left to right, eastern right to left
>>Straight lines are direct, curved lines moves slower
>>Diagonal lines are harsh and dynamic
>>S-curves amble naturally, C -curves are faster
>>Bigger masses overpower smaller ones
>>Smaller objects can make for good focal points
>>Denser lines guide the gaze
>>Paterns lead the eye back and forth
>>Depth = space
>>Mg, Mg, Fg
>>Rule of thirds & golden ratio shtick
>>Camera lens/angle can decide focal points/detail
>>Text is what they eye shoots too
>>We follow faces and eyes and gazes
>>Point-counterpoint
>>Atmospheric perspective provides depth
>>Overlapping
>>Farther=less detailed

This is all from just pretty much Framed Ink and various videos and infographics.
Now, I'd like to fill out this knowledge with some answers to some questions:

>>Whats the best article on leading lines?
>>What does it feel like when we move left to right, as oppposed to right to left?
>>Is there specific emotion from various directions?
>>More than a rudimentary view of upshots/downshots?
>>What happens/what are the rules of lines colliding?
>>Do specific shapes ellicit certain feelings?

If you read this, and have some answers or maybe videos to ponder on, any and everything is appreciated.

I think it's a little advanced a subject for you. You're basically cartooning, and not even trying to render something that looks real. Rocks don't look like that. Waves don't look like that. Clouds don't look like that.
And, you're using black too much. Pure black is actually very rare in nature, you should be using dark values of color, not black, especially in clouds, especially in clouds in front of the sub.
This image is what you're trying to do: see the difference?
For stuff like this, use a reference. You'll learn more.

Thanks anon.
>>
>>3088804
Honestly, you're working above your ability, again. Using browns to establish values...why? Just use black and white. And, your brushwork is very beginner, I would work on simpler objects, you've chosen things that would challenge even advanced artists. You're just piling mistakes on top of mistakes - poor drawing over poor anatomy over poor color choices over poor lighting.

As for hair, study it. Use references. Hair has a shape, and a volume, and has a grain to it, the direction of the hair, and it has a volume. You draw it by capturing the contours and shapes within, and then paint it using shadows, mid tones, and highlights.

I just don't think you'll learn much, working this advanced, when you don't have the building blocks mastered yet. You've chosen extremely advanced compositions, and the frustration and getting lost will keep you from learning anything of value.
>>
>>3089285
Chin is too shallow, it's too high, and throws off the entire lower part of the face. Use measuring to correct that.

This isn't the greatest reference to learn from, it's too contrasty and a lot of the values you need to build the form are blown out, or too dark. You gave her a giraffe neck, because you can't see the neck clearly. She does have a very long neck, but you didn't get the back right.

Too much scribbling, too. The hair is a cop out. You did good for a beginner, but ruined it with the scribbling in the hair, and the background. Keep your drawings more clear, or work on filling areas with a solid tone, with no pencil marks showing.

Good attempt, now try another one - don't use a contrasty photo for the next one.

The arms are way to short, if it's going to partly fall off the page then let it, don't force things into view when they shouldn't be. In the same way you've also curved and lengthened her left lower arm (behind her back) in a very strange way, the upper and lower arm are supposed to be about the same length.

You don't need that. Just draw. Draw what you feel like drawing. You used to draw when you were a kid, right? So do just that, take a pencil and start drawing. See what's wrong, try to improve. Do master studies.

Imagination is something you can train just like drawing from reference. It's hard because you haven't used that part of your brain enough but just draw something from imagination everyday and it will because easier. Also observing and exposing yourself to different things. If all you look at is people then it will be hard to draw animals or cars.
>>
>>3089777

Drawing from imagination is pretty much taking bits and pieces of specific stuff from your memory and mix them all together to produce something.

Whether that something is good or not depends on your experience and creativity.

But here's the thing. Not everybody have photographic memory and it takes time to ingrain something in your brain enough that you can pull it out anytime you want.

The reason people like kim jung gi can draw anything he could think of without relying on ref is because he draw a fuck ton. I heard he never go out without his sketchbook. He draw anything he see or he find interesting and he's been doing since god knows when...

It's okay to use ref especially for things you've never drawn before.

Keep practicing, keep drawing A LOT. Repetition is key.

A great man once said "When in doubt, draw it a 100 times more..."

Stop fucking memeing this, this is the worst piece of fucking advice I've ever seen on this site.
You can draw all the fuck you want, but if you never actively try to learn from it you won't get fucking anywhere.
You need to conciously practise, you need to try to conciously improve on what you did, that's the only way.
Just drawing will in the end run you into a fucking corner, where you have ingrained your faulty techniques to such a degree that you have no idea how to even start repairing it, except by starting from scratch.
Don't ever just draw.
Don't fucking tell people to just draw.
You need to make an effort and fucking practise.
Learn.

Is this jazza guy a bad meme? Should i watch his videos
>>
>>3089953
So what does it say? I'm not going to watch some youtube video just to get your point.

In any case everything you've said contradicts everything in my own experience and what I've learned in professional art. The artists who consistently get work are the ones who are flexible and capable of drawing in any required style.

The only ones who are stuck in one "muh style" are the beginners and amateurs who don't have the fundamental skills necessary to be flexible with style.
>>
>>3089974
Jazza is a good case study of how make money as an artist, but not how to be a skilled artist.
>>
>>3089949
KNKL just started a little tutorial series that might be helpful.

This one goes over more conceptual stuff like WHAT you need to learn.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMreh9SYSnE

This one goes more into HOW to use your tablet and photoshop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq89oZnCou0

If these aren't helpful then give ctrl-paint a shot, he's got a shit load of free videos on his site.
>>
>>3089949
maybe stop treating it like a pencil. its a brush
>>
>>3089984
well you're trying to create your own "muh style"; copying other styles for consistency in animation or to makes kids happy or whatever is different and doesnt require you to force a style out of nowhere.
>>
>>3090001
i like pencils. what precisely do you mean?

>>
>>3090019
thats great. but laying in tones will help you understand hatching variation too as it is essentially the same thing.

i wanted to hatch too starting out. i was inspired by manga. and nothing helped my hatching more than painting.

give it a shot.
>>
>>3090009
If anything, with inventing a personal style you havemore leeway, since you're not under any kind of a deadline, and you're basically your own boss when it comes to that. Yes, a lot of famous and successful artists have a personal style they are known for, but most of them are good enough they could draw in a variety of styles if they wanted or needed to. They just stick to what their fans / audience have learned to expect from them, to avoid damaging the trademark.

But yes, worrying about your personal snowflake "muh style" is a bit early when you're just learning to draw (took me a while to realize this was the beginner thread I was posting in)

First learn how to do things the correct, boring way, then begin experimenting.
>>
>>3090023
ok sounds like a worthwhile thing to learn. i'll make sure to do that

To find the darkest value of an object (excluding ambient occlusion,) you can take the lightest area, aka the true value and subtract it from the value ten (black) and divide that value by two. Then add that to the true value.

A cubes lightest value is 0 (White)
(10 - 0) / 2 = 5 - the darkest value of the cube is mid grey
A cubes lightest value is 5
(10 - 5) / 2 = 2.5 - Add 2.5 to 5 and the darkest side is 7.5.
A cube is light grey, so about 3
(10 - 3) / 2 = 3.5 - add 3.5 to 3 to get the darkest value of 6.5
Half way between those numbers is the mid value obv

You can replace the 10 with other values like 8 to achieve different shadow strengths im assuming.

>>
>>3090207
This is clouds. Clouds are fun to paint, once you figure out how they're formed, and how they move. Throwing color in is even more fun.

"Some clouds are turds" - that's where artistic license comes in - you paint or draw non-turn clouds instead.

See it as an opportunity, not a chore.

Alright guys, I don't know how to control myself.

>feel like I don't want to draw
>force myself to pick up sketchbook
>start doodling
>five hours later
>haven't stopped doodling

Doodling is totally worthless and I know I have to stay on subject. How do you properly discipline yourself?
>>
>>3090368
but the clouds at the bottom do look like turds.

>>3090352
very difficult spaming with difficult shading

anyways i went over and lightened everything up and changed the sky a bit (pushed the purple out and pushed the reds and yellows further). is this looking better? from here ill try to deturd my clouds with my sweet new brushes

>>

sketch again
the forms are not quite defined yet, you will have to make up a lot of stuff while you're inking
the inking should have a solid sketch underneath it so you aready know what you're going to draw with the pen/brush

just put this layer with like 30% opacity and sketch again over it, now a little less sketchy
>>
>>3090089
Depends where you're applying really. Some companies are only interested if you can draw in their established house style. Others may be looking for flexible individuals and then it's good to show in your portfolio that you can, in fact, flex.

>>

Just do some experiments, try different opacity and flow settings, see how colours blend, try different modes.

i think because scumbling is so natural with paint, it may be a bit easier to do clouds in oil.
>>
>>3090747
Just noticed the colours look different and the shading looks 10x worse on my phone than they did on pc.

>>3090752
I did. I played with the opacity, flow and brush hardness but it always looks clunky. I know I jist need to practice but I feel a bit aimless, not spending my time as effective as I should, because I've no rezl clue besides trial and error.
>>
>>3090747
Remember the background has a color/value as well.
Also pick better references.
>>
>>3090756
you may want to make sure your monitor is calibrated correctly. often people have their monitors set with high brightness and low contrast, whereas they should be the other way around, there are websites with calibration charts and stuff that can help if you find it daunting
>>
>>3090757
I didnt care much for the background it was just about the subject, or did I misunderstand you?

I picked naked women because of the curves and lines, and they're less intricate than other subjects I considered (in terms of colour and detail).

I set my monitor perfectly for gaming and editing videos so I assume it's not too great for drawing. Thanks, I'll google that!

>>
>>3090762
>I didnt care much for the background
all values in a drawing are about its relationship, white isn't bright just for being white its bright if it is near a darker value.
This is why when drawing a single subject people will put tones or hatching in the background.
Lines placed around the figure are not there to make a circle around the form outlines are only ever used to deepen the relationship of the edge of one object against another.

All of this can be discovered and mastered by drawing from life, and not photographs. Once you understand edges and basic construction and values you can study photos if you want

Because the other anon was massively unhelpful, I'll give a few pointers on what's wrong with the face.

General feature placement is okay, but not amazing.
Monocle too small
Nose too narrow, a bit too long.
Mouth too small, verging on nonexistent.
The beard looks like a thin layer wet dog hair he taped to his face. Beards have thickness and come off the face, they don't adhere to faces naturally. They're also naturally curly in most men.
Where is this boy's left ear?
Skeletal structure doesn't make sense. Cheekbones aren't placed correctly with respect to orbits, right side of his face seems to have no depth. Monocle doesn't interact with orbits, cheekbone or browridge.

Obviously tons of things are wrong with it, but I don't think it's as bad as the other anon says it is, other than the beard. Tons of things are wrong with any drawing. You can do a lot of things that are wrong and make a lot of mistakes but still be happy and satisfied with a drawing imo. Just be aware of them and work harder next time.
>>
>>3089459
It's not bad, your general anatomy is actually pretty good but the faces show a lack of loomis, or at least, you need to study it more.

Leftwoman's face isn't foreshortened properly for her to be looking down, the top of the head is visible, but then you draw the face the same length it would be if she was looking directly forward.

Right woman's eyes are too high up onto her forehead and the distance between the nose/mouth/chin is off.

I'd redline if I had my tablet on me.

Otherwise, I really like the detail on the clothing, and your lines are reasonably clean.

Another anon will have to get picky on the body anatomy because I am a /beg/ on that. Looks like yuo should have drawn Rightwoman's legs a little more through her dress to get to food placement correct.
