This is fantastic. I'm gonna disagree with the other anons - It's pretty clear that what you have is to define the fabric, not actual shader. It benefits from the sharp values.

I'm having a really hard time keeping my lines fluid and it's shitting me to tears. I've redone the body ten times and it gets worse with each iteration, but I don't want to thicken/vary my lines too much because it's going to be finished with watercolours.

let them, I think that we humanized gorillas/chimps so much in our culture through movies and games that any time you create a gorilla doing anything it comes off as unoriginal, and I guess I understand, but I just don't really care enough to respond. Did this random thing after watching planet of the apes, to get out of my comfort zone and nothing else, was pretty fun to do too.

I need advice. I've been drawing for many years and am happy enough with my current skill progression but sometimes it just feel like shit. Everything feels like shit, every single line I draw feels wrong. This builds up into frustration and anxiety and then I just lose all confidence and am not able to draw for the rest of the day. This mostly applies to figures and it makes me doubt my construction method even though I have seen the results I can get out of it. Lately I have also been getting afraid of the blank canvas and noticed I perform much better on an already sketched piece of paper than otherwise.

I have been drawing every single day since the beginning of January. The progress has been incredible, but I feel like my mind has developed a bunch of issues that sometimes show up to hinder me.

Please help, I'm hopiing someone went through something similar and got out of it or something.
>>
>>3086122
advice i'd give to everyone here: draw the way you drew when you first started drawing. No matter how bad or good. Picasso was a genius when he was a child, so he painted in his comfort zone his whole life. Be comfortable with how good you were when you started and stop trying to escape how good and/or bad you are. Any "improvements" you make are usually superficial, and you trying to force the idea that you are getting "better". Fuck getting better. Just be yourself.
>>

Could use some texture on the sand and play with your light source on the dunes, right now everything looks very flat, no scale and dimension to the environment.
>>
>>3086291
any tips on texturing? everything I tried looked kinda bad. Also, if you have any good tips for drawing environments in general, that would be cool
>>
>>3086292
I mean less using a texture in Photoshop and more understanding the form and makeup of the environment. Think about sand, what does it feel like? How does it react to light hitting it's surface? How would clouds above cast shadows on the sand dunes below? How would a different time of day change the lighting and the form of light on the sand dunes? Take all of these things into consideration when doing environment art.
>>
>>3086339
good thoughts anon, I'll keep this stuff in mind.
Not sure if I'm gonna try improving that piece I did any more, I'd rather start over with something new, maybe do something purely environment focused.

I only had 15 minutes before heading off to work so it's a bit rushed but I tried laying out a general procedure you can use. Basically working general to specific. Start off with big shapes before detailing the eyes and stuff. Constantly flick your eyes back and forth quickly between the ref and you image to judge values and shapes. Try to always get the drawing more accurate at each stage too. As you get further along in it the higher overall accuracy will allow you to see small errors in the structure that you didn't see before and that will need to be fixed. Also try staying zoomed out. I painted this with it about 2 inches tall on my screen.

>>3086419

So this was my second attempt at colouring this. By all accounts my second big use of Copic Markers.

I've got a shit ton to learn, and this was a way for me to break away from just pencil drawings. Practice with inking and applying greyscale. I'll need to articulate proper values going forward more an more. It would take me a full year to get this image just right, but I need to move forward from this project.

Feels great to break away from pencils a little.

if the eye level is exactly at the middle of the cone of vision (from where you're looking), it's 1 or 2 point.
if the cone of vision is tilted upwards or downwards it becomes 3 point, until you get to a point where you're looking straight down, then it becomes 1/2 point again

Probably is a paper issue, I have been using brand new copics.

What paper works best?
>>
>>3087821
It's been a longtime since I used copics so you should probably do further research

watercolour paper will get you vibrant colours but it'll absorb more ink so you'll go through your marker faster. Canson cold press is good

mixed media paper isn't so vibrant but it takes less work to get an even flat colour and blends and layers really nicely

I should mention too that it's how your using the markers too. colour in circular motions and go over the same area more than once until it's an even flat colour.

someone already said it but those trees are really taking away from the piece. I don't think you'll get the trees right by fiddling with it, so here's what I'd do. The building is so well done, that instead of ruining the painting by overworking the trees, you should remove them all together, and instead make the building exist on a flat plane in an illustrative way.

something abstract like this.

I just don't know if you'll be able to complete those trees convincingly, and I'd like to see the building shine. I just think you should save tree practice for a piece that isn't as good as this one. Even if that means you need to make this more of an abstract piece.

Really? They are both almost five inches tall... I think that's alright for a couple of sketches. I agree bigger is better in general but even Scott Robertson usually works in smaller sizes and blows stuff up in Photoshop that he likes if he wants to render it.
>>
>>3088237
really desu senpai. The difference is that he uses a very thin marker/pen. The reason I suggested you draw bigger is because your lines are so thick that the lines suggesting texture are indiscernible from the lines that make up your forms. I typically draw 6+ inches in all directions, and if you ever want to do big pieces like the masters, you definitely want to start drawing big. It helps with a lot as long as you take a few moments every now and then to step back and look at the bigger picture
Also start thinking in forms
>>
>>3088120
The colors are definitely a strong point.
I like the ambitiousness of the composition, but it could use improvement. Like I think it would serve the piece well if you expanded the canvas down and to the right, so not only is the action better centered, but so the figures feel more connected to the ground. As it is now, they get cut off.
I really like the warped curvature of what we can see of the ground. It gives a strong radial composition and it reflects the clouds circling the sun. But again, it feels cut off here.

>>3088259
I see your point and I concede to it

A book, an exercise, anything.

>>3085879
Neat, but it could some hard edges. A couple around her eyes and nose to bring the attention to the important bits.

>>3085969
Your best chance is probably to use the table as an anchor and then construct the figures in circles around it, as if it was an amphitheatre.

The table is in 3 point, but you should pick a much simpler scene if you're new to this.
>>
>>3088156
At this stage only use ink to practice line confidence, when you want to describe form, use a more forgiving medium, like ballpoint pen, regular or charcoal pencil. Ink flattens everything out if you don't have a solid understanding of form to back it up.
Keep drawing, keep improving.

Well I went over the piece and did what I could to clear up streaking issues. While this is unfortunately polishing a turd it still is much better than what I presented earlier.

I used a Canson 14x17 70lb page for this. Unfortunately it is a Drawing Pad. I'll need to acquire their Marker Pad going forward.

Will have to stick to doing pencil practice with inking practices for now with this paper.

Again, thank you.

was definately worth it, nice job mang. And good luck with finding paper, do be careful with the marker paper, they can really be a hit or miss. And specifically look up if they're good with copics. Some markers will work fantastic with a brand but another type of marker will do really poorly.

The thing that really pops to mind, is the lighting is WAY too weak for the desert. The desert is all sun, it's hard, sharp, deep shadows and bright highlights. You'd get soft shadows and lighting like that on an overcast day. Also, the sky in the desert is a deep, brilliant blue, and the colors on a non-overcast day are saturated and deep.
The legs are a little awkward, you need more experience rendering cloth and texture, and the hands are too big, and the thumb on the right hand would need to be broken to be in that position.

Good attempt, but this is a little over your ability level.
>>
>>3087853
The preferred paper for markers is bristol paper. Watercolor paper is not good for markers, as it will bleed, regardless of what the finish is - and is more expensive than bristol. After bristol, the next best surface is hot press illustration board.
>>
>>3087866
Pretty good. The lighting is a little funky - the dome has a bright highlight, but the trees have none, and the clouds don't show a light source like that, either - and the lighting on the structure overall is flat.
>>
>>3088851
Glad to hear it was worth it. Will have to experiment with that paper. I have heard of copics on some paper leaving sticky residue that pools. Hopefully the Marker Pad doesn't do that.

Don't use grey for fleshtones. She looks like half a cadaver.

Cool tones, use blues, purples, etc. Warm tones, use oranges and yellows and reds.

Watch this video. He's talking about the classic oil palette to create skin - it's easily transferred to the digital domain.

Looks good. Just needs you to flesh out the finer details. And give more depth to her face with a greater range of values. And grey is fine, but you have to stick with that. You can't give her grey under eyes for no reason without it being consistent with the lighting (cool shadows in several places).
Also stop blending in a curved motion along her cheeks like she's a saggy bitch. It'll be more dynamic if her skin has hue and value shifts in more places. Needs more detail overall. /braindump

You're on the right track. Seeing color in skin is hard for a lot of people, and photos often strip a lot of that out - which is why drawing and painting people in person can be so much more powerful, you'll see the colors reflected in the skin. The more you do it, the more you'll see it, and the more experience you'll have - and remember things like "Redheads have very translucent skin, so they reflect a TON of color in their skin", so if drawing a redhead, pump the colors up. Environment can influence what colors are there, too.

Not to obsess over making everything perfect the first time. Sometimes it's better to just get something down, then step away and come back with a fresh mind at a later time. Also, that
there's value in simplifying details. I started with an overly-rendered eyeball, then decided towards the end to redo them and simply them a bit. Now I think the eyes are my favorite part.

I can compare this with other portraits I've painted pretty recently and can see a bit of improvement, so that's nice.

Hmm... If it was the rendering I would probably be able to help more, sorry. The only thing I can offer is that maybe you could try something very different stylistically and see if it works better for you? Like skipping lineart entirely, painting over your sketch, trying new brushes, that kind of thing. Stabilization can make lineart a lot harder sometimes, too.

And though I did it for rendering, it helped me a lot to force myself to do things to at least messy completion under a time slot. 5 min, 15 min, 30 min, 60 min mostly

don't listen to that dickhead, The proportions aren't terrible. Besides whats the point of saying "proportions are off" and not saying which ones?

The chair and other stuff you added isn't working and not at all on the same plane, your prior sketch was much better.

I dont have a tablet on me to redline but assuming it's purely from imagination, your doing a lot of stuff right in the body but the head and neck is totally flat, its clear your not thinking of them as 3d elements or you lost it.. The neck connecting to head can be tricky at first but try drawing a curving cylinder with a circle or square on top for the head until you start to get the hang of it. A common bad habit some people have is to think of and draw a 3d head and ribcage and then just draw two flat lines to connect them without thinking about if it really works spatially. The neck essentially connects in the complete middle of the head of that makes any sense, you have the head too far forward so it looks like a mask.

The arm that's up is also totally flat, that's why the shoulder muscle isn't wrapping around that arm properly, your forearms are especially flat and wonky. The hands aren't the worst but totally still off.

Basically your thinking in 3d form for parts of it, the body seems fine but your flattening other parts of the body you aren't familiar with, and drawing them 2d. Also, don't avoid feet, draw a little triangle or something for the feet if you have to, but always ground the figure or you'll be more inclinded to draw flat. Seeing feet on a plane is one of the best ways to orientate a figure in space and begin to see it that way.

Thanks! I'm flattered. :0

I desaturated it a little and it looks less muddy, but I get your point.
Maybe I should take a step back in the rendering or go further like my work in pic related.

Right now I'm aiming at Jake Wyatt and Kevin Hong works for what I want my art to look like, but Jake has a more contrasty palette with dirtier, but more graphical look and Kevin Hong has a more clear and soft work overall.
I'm not really sure for where I should go from now, maybe I should have worked more on the lines to make them tighter and stopped the lightning passes some steps earlier.

What you guys think?

There's no line width variation

WIP: colors and values on the body will be edited. stuck on what to do for the horns/ trying to make the tits look more passable.

>>3092112
overall very cute, though i think in the future you should be more conservative with the range of line weights you are using because the thicker ones don't work well in certain areas like on the figures and the luggage on top of the cabin.

Ah, that is an old work of mine that I just used to illustrate what direction I should take to improve. Anyway it's a good critique that I think applies to the Bulma piece too.

Rewinding the guy to the moment when he was ABOUT TO stab her + making the background support that dynamic would make this work much better.

I personally think it is the expression. The previous study had a nice emotive quality to the facial expression. He looked worried which was complimented by the stark (pun?) contrast of the high lit face and black background. Bron isn't a well known actor or face. So it read to me as a nice emotional face study. This one is simply a smirking celebrity. A well known celebrity of which there is innumerable art already. So this just reads as fan art, which is boooooring. Nicely rendered though anon definitely has ability.

I think it'll look better once I finish the other half, it's one of the very rare moments in the show where he lets out some emotion, it's a pretty powerful frame with some great lighting on top so it was interesting to me.

>>
>>3093938
I was going to be gentle, but:
>it's not wrong, it's my style!
you are in the wrong place son

you have fundamentals to perfect before you can even think about developing a style. you don't have to be drawing "hyperrealism"; drawing shitty cartoons is no excuse for having no understanding of the basics.

you have zero understanding of how an eye fits into an eye socket (he's rolling his eyes, that's why they look so terrible), how to structure the forms of the face (I can see your guesswork on where to fit the eyes, nose and mouth) and where the head sits on the neck, to name a few.

go to /beg/ and practice, and i highly suggest taking this advice and this >>3093908 advice if you want to get better than the boring amateurs saturating deviantart and tumblr that don't care about fundamentals

tl;dr - study some damn Loomis

>>3095396
study that precise pose. She is putting more weight on her left leg,so we should see a slightly bent left knee and a straight right light. You've drawn both knees at the same height.
perspective on the phone is totally fucked. We should be able to see the lower part of the phone(where the charge port is located).
Feet are too big.I'd rather see something cell shaded in this. It's like you cell shaded it and then softened the edges. It's not a full render.
>>
>>3095396
Well this is fun! I would suggest either adding or removing more values from your shading. Your shading gradation is in a strange middle stage right now that makes the shading look choppy and streaky. Overall, your proportions look decent, but the fabric could be more naturalistic (does not necessarily need to be). I enjoyed your line variation. Nice work!
