>PS:TL;DR
>When you are physically hungry, go draw.
>When you want to draw, go eat instead.
I think the modern archetypical image of the artist as a creative bohemian set on unleashing the "flower of the mind" is largely due in part to picasso.
Like in the picture, originally artists were cave painting loners, isolated probably not by choice.
Then slaves of the church, commisars, or "WEW DRAW ME"
Then respected as academics, draftsmen, before cameras.
It is only until our modern Duchampian art school dropout (Try, ugly found objects or garbage), do we return to a definition worse than the original.
We should aspire, to yes, iflict a bit of duchampian tongue and cheek "heh well is even THIS considered art?" but also be isolated loners, to be visual dictionaries and cameras, and slaves to those who cannot draw. We can't survive on a single definition alone because we are quickly bored of success. All in all, we can't forget our role, we must be the sole definers of what it means to be artists.
When everything is art, the mailman is an artist when he has a "beautiful thought" and thus ?? Thus we let non-artists define us. and the quality of our art decays.
It isn't someone who draws, or makes, its just someone who knows the definition of artist. If you want to become more confident in yourself, and your community, ask everyone you meet, what is your definition of an artist? Quickly you will filter, and filter, and realise nobody's answer satisfies you.
Be secretive, then and only then, will you have the keys to reach deep inside, and point at yourself and say:
"Nobody knows what an artist is, not even I can say so, But when I look inside I see him chipping away at some ideal, day after day, to neurosis."
Look at him, and say to him "YOU ARE AN ARTIST, NOT I"
So the artist must guard his inner life, not reveal or be inspired by it, for it is last vestige of human before artist he has left.
