What is the minimum level of skill art-wise (ergo. excluding design skill) that you need to find a job as a concept artist? Does anyone have any examples or stories about your first job?
Bonus points for freelance

Someone post that image with the concept artists that aren't James Paick level.

Get connected to people is probably the most important thing nowadays, unless you are already at the top tier level. Even then it's hit or miss without knowing people in the industry.

I know Ahmed Aldoori worked for a theme park doing designs and illustrations that got him into the game industry somehow.

Minimum skill is hard to measure since if your client knows jack shit about art they'll probably buy anything if you can deliver on time and within their budget.

One of my art teachers gave us this advice for simultaneously building a portfolio as well as helping word of mouth type exposure.

He said find businesses, especially ones just starting out. Design them stuff and show it to them and see if they're interested.

He suggested giving it to them for free from there but I disagree with that sentiment myself. Don't give your art away.

He eventually got his first design job through doing this but that was also in the 90s so grain of salt.

Well anon you can't just say "digital 2d graphics job". That can be logo design, portraiture, graphics, web designs, labels, branding, concepts. In the animation field you could do backgrounds, storyboards, character design, prop design, effects, fillers, cleaner, colorist, actual animating, etc. You need connections and you need to know exactly what job your certain skills can be used for, and to have separate portfolios for each industry focus before filling out applications. If you dont know how to do certain things like photoshop/illustrator/vectoring, you'll need some art school first.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
