made this a few days ago, do you guys think the color pallete is alright?

Good taste, pixelbro.

This one is a game changing pixel art.
Literally the first piece Ive ever seen, just, the dress, it's beyond pixel art

This dude lost his mind
shame because i don't think anyone could rival him in pixel art
>>3074699

>>3074695
I guess youve never seen metal slug's pixel art before
I may as well contribute, I like these threads, I just wish it was a little more lively.
A snake going through a portal. It's just a little something I did a few weeks ago, it could use some polishing. Critiques?
>>3075340
The funny thing about that pic is that the animation is done only changing the color palette
Quick question from a noob.
If i want to get into pixel art should i try making my own first or copy other sprites first to get used to it?
>>3076754
Start by making your own, there's no sense in using a crutch with a relatively easy to learn medium.
>>3077446
will do then, already practicing
>>3076754
You should learn to fucking draw first.
Anyone like uno moralez?
>>3078160
that seems uncalled for
>>3075336
How'd they get the effect on the grass? I'm guessing a filter/paintover type deal? I really like this effect
>>3079982
it looks like a real video
So I made this one to experiment with color, all of this was done with just 15 colors from the EGA palette and I like the results but the draftsmanship in this one is very poor, the perspective is off, the light makes no sense and the anatomy is weak. Next time I should polish those things more
>>3080597
I also made one with atari colors, there maybe some rogue pixels in this one
What palette do you guys prefer?
>>3080601
I like this palette more, its less hard on the eyes.one thing i have to comment about though is that the background looks pretty plain
>>3074666
Really solid I am surprised.
I'm interested in pixel art and this "forest" pixel art is my first attempt, what do you guys think

anyone know what program Paul Robertson uses?
In an interview he said he still uses some old program and old techniques
First sprite, wish me luck for the future
I really want to start pixel art and art in general but I'm too unconfident to just throw myself in and draw whatever I want. Is there any useful set of exercises I can follow to help me build some familiarity?
>>3090706
>Is there any useful set of exercises I can follow to help me build some familiarity?
yes.
just start drawing.
and keep drawing.
every artist's secrets is how much more they had drawn than you will ever draw.
stop trying to make that perfect art at your first try.
stop trying to do it the 'correct' way.
just start drawing, get opinions from others, learn from the mistakes, improve, and keep drawing.
>>3090711
Why does this advice sound so great but I can't help but not fully trust it and in myself?
>>3090711
>anon says his lack of confidence is preventing him from just drawing and seeks some kind of exercise to help pull him in and start doing it as an initial crutch
>just do it lol
You should become a therapist, anon.
>>3090718
>finding excuses to avoid starting
>finding more excuses to avoid starting
>the truth is it's afraid of failures
there's no cure for that.
either start it now, or never.
all you have to do, is start drawing.
If you think you can't draw,
then take something you're confident in and draw it.
draw a lamp,
draw a car,
draw a phone,
doesn't matter what.
just start drawing.
>>3090706
I can't really tell you how to get confidence or a definitive git gud guide, but I can tell you a little about how I got started.
When I started I was interested in making a Zelda-like game
so I started off by creating small tiles and objects like fences, chests, pots and whatever else.
I tried my hand at making characters but it didnt go very well
so I took an RPG sprite that I liked and from cross-referencing between other characters I mapped out the basic anatomy and created a Sprite Base.
Sprite Bases can be useful for learning since they're training wheels
if you take a sprite base and then make 100s of 'original' characters you will learn to get half decent while still keeping it simple and fun.
Ofcourse later to progress I had to look at all the millions of tutorials out there, learning how to antialias correctly, animate etc etc
>I really want to start pixel art and art in general but-
If I would have to take a guess I'd say that's the problem, I'd say you can't start to learn something "in general" by yourself
You have to find out for yourself exactly what you want to achieve and then start working towards that
Objectively speaking there are always faster and more efficient ways to learn the basics and eventually git gud
however a lot of the time you turn your pursuit into your enemy, the pursuit no longer becomes your own.
The thing about we humans is we tend to neutralize our enemies, usually through diplomacy, there are also other ways
but it makes no sense to argue or bargain with your pursuit because its not going to listen, its just going to tell you whats not working.
If you instead own your pursuit meaning that you always have a clear goal in mind and every step towards that goal will make you feel good about it
you will come up with ways to solve your problems or work around them all on your own, instead of sitting around going
>wow look at all these problems, pixel art is an asshole
More importantly get to work
>>3085061
>>3083520
Well for starters, you should know the difference between sprites and pixel art
sprites are always pixel art but pixel art is not always sprites.
Spriting is also easier than doing full pixel art scenes and I recommend you begin with the following:
This is my sprite thread circa 2005 so I was 12 years old then.
http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?96602-ForeverDes-Spriting-Thread
As you can see, I did mostly edits, but what made my methodology different and albeit succesful was that the best formula to get good at spriting is :
PERSON ACTION OBJECT
&
PERSON ACTION'ing an OBJECT
First, for Person: In this example I did Wes from Pokemon collosseum in Pokemon advance style.
Shoot for doing new characters in styles of games to wet your beak.
Try editing an already made sprite.
Action - Look at pokemon attacks, flamethrower, etc, look at the sword swipe animation on GBC link
CONVEYing is essential in spriting and this will become more obvious when you realise old school developers were trying to convey an entire world with 4 colors.
Again editing before going full custom.
Object - This is where pixel art shines, Look at the items from pokemon GBA games, theyre so PING and shiny and doty and almost chibi. Chibification is not done by choice, imagine you have to sell pokemon red to a child in the 90's, you have to make the characters both appealing while simultaneously fitting them on a small screen. see >>3074692 for a good example of this. THIS is not a concrete rule, as >>3074686 shows, but one that will hinder you to ignore.
Once again edit something that already exists.
After you've done this, take your three edits and make a 100% custom attempt where you make the person doing the action you made to the object you made.
>Blue ash ketchum my fan char throwing a shiny green marble.
PS I am open to questions about spriting, but not so knowledgable about pixel art. I suggest checking out pixeljoint, TIGSource, etc
Just getting back into pixel art - or art in general. These are some cars I made a year or two ago for a gamejam.
I'm always under the assumption that artists back in the day had to work with Microsoft Paint or some early version of Photoshop to achieve this kind of look to their artwork. Are there any of you who could send me along in the right direction with this?
I'd really appreciate what ever help you're all willing to provide, thanks a lot.
okay guys i made a tanya sprite, how is it?
sorry about the black background the white was hurting my eyes and i couldn't figure out how to make it transparent
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywIfhavpQrQ
>>3093965
that type of art is known is oekaki .theres things on dithering in the op that could probably help
>>3094126
pose is pretty bland
proportions
what is that hair even
the palette for the hair and skin are bad
does not draw out the defining features of the character very well
(I can see that you tried atleast with the eyelashes and ahoge)
Arms have ok-ish form to them
Legs look flat, probably in part because the shading is inconsistent
the gun is very bland and looks to be entirely made out of wood
>my suggestions
The current resolution of the sprite is probably beyond your skill level
(to get to professional quality)
If you are going to work at a lower resolution, consider stylizing more
Use proper anti-aliasing (different colored outlines) to draw out shapes more
Go for form over details to start off
If you cant get the silhouette or pose to read/engage properly dont bother polishing it too much
A sprite of that size should take no more than 1hr from blob to finish
(once you have the skeleton drawn)
If you take longer than that you are not experienced enough and you should stop and redraw
It is more important to 'complete' sprites than polishing turds
>okay guys i made a tanya sprite, how is it?
2.5/10
>>3094126
>>3094338
Here's an example of similar size and palette
It might give you some ideas
>>3094216
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.
>>3094432
Yeah, I have the nasty habit of buying off more than I can chew. And this really was my first attempt at pixel art/sprites so I have no idea what I'm doing. Just having fun. Also it took two weeks more or less since I couldn't dedicate much time to it
Just "finished" this tonight. I'm new to pixel art but have a shaky background in traditional art over the years. Let me have it.
>>3095614
too much dithering, unclear what is going on
>>3096055
Makes sense. That is a challenge.
>>3078228
my man
bump for interest
Why is the pixel art level for the most part so low here, at a drawing board of all places?
>>3097842
Because good pixel artists have no need for 4chan noobs to give them feedback, so the only ones posting are noobs who don't realize you can get better feedback at a community actually dedicated to pixel art. plus the quality of most art on this board is shit, regardless of medium. this is a board for shitposting, casuals, and serious artists who would never be publicly associated with such a cesspool.
Have you guys noticed that in the pixel art world being a Japanese can give you a lot of "pixel cred." I mean it's understandable since a lot of them are good at pixel art, and the art medium itself has a lot of history in Japan more than any other country.
But, damn I see a lot of mediocre pixel artists get a lot of followers and attention just because they are from Japan. And vice versa
Wanted to redo some sprites from when I first started pixel art.
>>3098140
Never seen this. Most the pixel artists I know and follow are Russian, European, and American. There are a few South Americans worth following but the only Japanese pixel artist I'm even familiar with is syosa. Maybe things are different in weeb web communities or some normie social media platform.
>>3098140
I can't see where you're coming from. I mean just look at pixeljoint, some of the top artists are either french slavic or some other european denomination, with the occasional american and jap sprinkled in there.
>>3098140
have you ever noticed that you're racist piece of shit
>>3099298
I've never seen a Jap at Pixel Joint despite a lot of amazing video game pixel art coming from there. It's a lot of Europeans and Americans.
>>3099298
those fucking russians man. I guess there's not anything else to do and all the computers are from the 80s so pixel art is a national past time.
did these the other night, sorry I am kinda shitty
>>3099803
also sorry for not naming my files
>>3098908
i like your style anon.have anymore to share ?
Updated an old sprite. Original on left, newer version on right.
Which do you prefer?
>>3100104
Left.
Stupid think I'm never gonna fu king fisnish
>>3100104
The teal armor-like segments are better shaded on the right. But the left has a better gesture, even though it's just a frontal pic.
It's old but I would like to finish it. Other than shading and lighting what else should be improved?
>>3099888
I got this room that I plan to throw out, so might as well post it here.
For people who has been doing pixel art for a while:
What's the most comfortable mouse to use? Even though I have a Wacom I find myself using the mouse a lot. And my gaming mouse started to give me wrist pain. What's the best mouse for heavy duty stuff that's comfortable. Thanks in advance.
>>3100441
I hope you finish that piece, it looks so good. I especially love the grass and her hair!
>>3102230
>heavy duty mouse stuff
???
I've been using pic related for close to 4 years now and it's still going strong
I am partial to the MX518 design and fit but they have usually broken after 2 or 3 years while this one with a nylon cable just wont give up on me it seems
>wrist pain
That can be the mouse but it can also be the ergonomics of your setup or simply technique
You need to correctly identify the problem or you can't find the solution without blind trial & error
Reminder to study drawing and not just pixel art.
>>3102936
stiff Gesture

tried to make a earthbound battle sprite.
what do you guys think?
>>3103877
bad
>>3103933
oh, do you know anything that I can improve?
>>3103877
Well, for a start, if its an Earthbound sprite, it's way too big. The shading it's bad as well, it should be way softer.
>>3103984
I see what I can do about it anon.thanks for the comments.
>>3103967
it's beginner level, should focus on learning how to draw first
>>3103995
im sorry anon but that doesn't really help me figure out whats wrong with the image.
>>3103998
pretty much everything is wrong with it, you have no idea how to do anything that relates to drawing
pixel art requires the same ability to render three dimensional forms on a 2d plane as any other medium
aka loomis
>>3103999
thanks for the help anon! Your great wisdom on the subject has given me great clarity.gonna go read a book about art now.
>>3104004
if only you weren't being sarcastic
>>3104006
nah im not joking anon. im going to read the animator's survival kit since I heard that was good.
but a quick question what the hell is a loomis? i looked it up on the internet and i found nothing.
>>3104007
Google "Loomis Drawing" or "Andrew Loomis".
Also, I don't think you should go straight to animation, focus on your basic drawing skills first.
>>3104013
I see what you mean anon I will try to comprehend these books. Also one more thing, I See You're a Man of Art and you seem to be a pixel artist as well. im always looking for people to be inspired by. Do you have a Tumblr or something like that? where I can follow your craft.
>>3104013
don't respond to obvious shitposters anon
>>3104018
I don't, actually. I haven't posted any of my art anywhere for the last years, mostly because deviantart is kinda shitty and tumblr is full of angeries. I mostly do art for myself now, I was working on some sprites and animation, I might post it here later.
>>3104022
I don't know man, most people just don't know better.
>>3104022

I recently made this and would appreciate a critique or too. I would also like to start drawing people, but I am having difficulties shaping our my bodies. Any advice on where to begin or what area to strengthen in to make it easier to learn?
weekly reminder that doing pixel art is not an alternative to learning how to draw
>>3109895
the colors are terrible, but that might just be my taste.I dont think mustard yellow ever looks good
>>3109895
How do I get as good as you at swords?
>>3110212
desu, swords are literally the only thing I can do well. If I could trade drawing swords for people, I would do it in a heart beat. But as for what helps me make my swords, knowing the "Anatomy" of various swords helps as well as knowing the difference between various sword types. Don't be afraid to use references either.
>>3110205
I agree. I was trying to go for a darker gold color (almost like brass) but I couldn't seem to get the colors right, even when I tweaked them over and over and over again, so I decided to leave the blade in the middle a lighter color so it would stand out from the darker cross guard, however, you are right. I do wish the colors were better and I appreciate the critique :)
>>3110212
Also, don't rush. I spent two weeks on just the shapes alone because I wanted to fit as much detail as I could on such a small canvas. The crossguard took up a very large majority of that time, but don't rush and keep your patience.
>>3110212
but it looks bad
>>3109895
You should choose a sunnier oranger shade of yellow and render sheen.
>>3111211
Thank you. I will heed your advice
I quit pixel art ages ago because I was shitty at drawing. All this normie pixel art making me reconsider my choices. People don't even know how to use color palettes efficiently here and that's the most basic quality of pixel art.
>>3103152
Not bad at all, anon. I could definitely see that in one of these games!
I did a Kirby sprite too,a few months ago :
Started animating my sprites. I'm not a very good animator, but I figure these shitty little animations will work for the small-scale game I intend to make. Am I wrong?
>>3111852
What type of game is it? If it's a turn-based rpg, animations as simple as this might work.
>>3111975
it is a turn-based RPG, yeah
>>3108939

Does anyone have a recent windows build of aseprite?
Got around to learning how to use tiled to make maps. Here's my first work.
>>3113152
These are the exact kind of tilesets I want to make. I envy you.
>>3111798
First time spriting. I'm still studying fundamentals and I know the pose has little to no movement, and anatomy is definitely off. It took me about an hour and 15 minutes to do this. I think I should be starting at a lower resolution. I'm not sure how to avoid jaggies, as my concept of a rogue pixel is literally a single pixel. I want to try dithering and anti aliasing, but I want some critique first. Also, excuse the scaling, I'm currently doing everything off my phone which automatically adds blur when scaling.
>>3108425
On my Instagram but that's really it. I don't make a lot of pixel art.
Here's a less complex but finished one
My Instagram name is kabi_daxon
please remember that learning how to draw is the surest way to improve your pixel art
>>3114521
Should you do pixel art inbetween? Learning how to draw is like apparently a 3 year long journey or something.
>>3114561
Man that actually just looks like a piece of shit or a potato.
>>3114558
>Learning how to draw is like apparently a 3 year long journey or something.
If you're lucky
(Good) Pixel art looks the way it does because it's drawing, but it's drawn to make the most effective use of the available space and palette.
The lower res you go the more tricks you have to use and sometimes compromising perspective for aesthetics within reason.
Pixel Art more aptly called Dotting is only different because every single pixel has a purpose which is what drawing does not explicitly teach you.
>>3114757
>Pixel Art more aptly called Dotting
That's dumb.
>>3114760
Why?
the majority of your work revolves around dotting out individual pixels of different colors, the mouse not actually being inferior to a pen in this case
calling it Pixel Art leads to a whole bunch of confusion as to what is and what isnt pixel art because most people seems to think anything that can be drawn in MSPaint is Pixel Art.

>>3115075
Thanks but that's what I've been doing. I'm still drawing from life, but I'm doing this parallel to that. Do you have any specific critiques or outstanding issues? I want to know what I'm screwing up in order to know what to practice.
Totally new to this, besides illustration/gif, how does learning pixel art work for contributing to the creation of a video game?
Are you like some sort of character designer/animator? What do you have to learn?
>>3115172
No major issue beside the character design being kind of bland, look up The Noble Approach by Maurice Noble, it talks about all sort of design stuff.
>>3115251
what >>3115260 this guy said pretty much
Most bigger not entirely indie but still publisher backed pixel games have teams of 4-6 artists from what I've seen.
And there's an obvious skill difference in maybe one or two of them that's a mix of teamleader, art director and character designer
they're the 'rockstars' that decide how all the shading, ambient occlusion and proportions are done.
The rest of them can rely on these people to act as training wheels
theoretically they have the technical skill to draw the same way as the rockstars
but judging from their own work you can see that they lack consistency and that sense of aesthetics.
I don't like the idea of pitting these two people against each other as I have great respect for both but..
AbyssWolf is the best pixel artist I've ever seen when it comes to doing Anime style Pixel Art. I don't know what more to say.
Orkimides however clearly does not have the skill of AbyssWolf as demonstrated by the higher res HoTS spritework.
They were once working on a project called Card Saga Wars after making a huge amount of sprites in what they call "Card-Style"
My guess it's AbyssWolf's command of shading and Orkimides's fairly distinct chibistyle that spawned this style.
The two lower res spritesheets at the bottom were done separately but in the same style, I honestly would have a hard time picking who drew what blindly.
>Long Winded conclusion
You have to be decent to work under someone in a team.
If you're solo which is how most start out you have to be highly skilled to meet all the requirements of filling all those roles at the same time.
>>3115280
Thank you so much. Have a great day.

don't attempt pixel art solely as it's own thing that's just a goddamn mistake

but is it possible to improve drawing and pixel art at the same pace or do I have to master one before moving to the next.
I'm actually trying to be a jack
ass
of all trades and practice art, pixel art, 3D and animation. I know the quality of work will be bad if I don't stick to one and master it, but that's my plan until the end of the year and see which one I like the most
>>3118704
It is possible.
>>3118704
no matter what medium you're using, you need to learn the fundamentals first, and most of those are easier to learn via drawing than with pixel art, which presents an additional set of obstacles.
