Do you like listening to music while you draw? What music should you listen to? Discuss.
>>
some people say its bad to listen to music because its a distraction, which i kind of agree .
however i also think that if you hear music that you have heard over and over again it becomes like a white noise and its not a distraction.(was discussing this with another anon in a previous thread about music while drawing)
this happens to me i monitored the amount of stuff i was able to do in silence and then with certain music and videos that i dont have to pay attention to because i have heard it a lot examples are the shinobi 3 ost ,sonic ost's and some other games that i use to play all the time so i associate that kind of music to focus and concentration numerous frank zappa albums, steve vai, bach stuff (fugues 915,565,brandenberg 5.1 allegro and others but those are the main ones) the silent hill 4 album, Mozart's don giovanni or the magic flute and some of his fugues ,avgn , trailer park boys, its always sunny in philadelphia (not music but i listen to it) and some other things that dont come to mind at this time.
if i listen to that stuff my production levels are about the same as silence which is sometimes do as well because i will forget to turn on the music or whatever because i just got wrapped up in whatever i was drawing when i was outside smoking.
so in a way i think silence is actually better. but i often dont just wanna sit there in silence. and with those specific things i usually do about the same amount.

however with music i have never heard or videos i have never seen i do less so i tend to limit what i listen to while drawing so i never do that. so find what music you really know and listen to over and over because they can be a distraction.

I'll listen to music before I draw, to get myself "in the mood."

I listen to instrumental hip-hop, IDM and breakcore.
I wouldn't listen to anything lyrically focused though.
>>
I sometimes turn on the radio at a low volume and tune into a classical stations.
It's nice and sometimes when I take a short break I turn the volume a little higher and I just enjoy the music to get some inspiration.

I enjoy music as much as the next guy but get easily distracted and can't listen to anything more active than ambient music. People mentioning rockbands and breakcore are madmen to me. I really like painting to artists like Alio Die which is probably what Da Vinci would have listen to were he alive today.

There is a small sliver of classical music that doesn't completely interrupt my flow

Modernist composers like Feldman can get you in the zone as well

Hell yeah music always puts me in the mood to draw for hours. Aesop rock and Captain Murphy are a must imo
>>

I always start out listening to music, whatever I feel like at that moment, but after a while in the drawing session I just stop listening to music because I'm so in the zone that It doesn't register anyways

I like to listen to long mixes. I used to listen to live recordings of the Orb from like 93 and those were perfect. They were beautiful and hours long, am sad that they were deleted from youtube there were like 6-8 of them from around the world. I fucking miss them.

Now it's just podcasts.

I usually listen to Stefan Molyneux or Medcast whenever Ahmed uploads one during the early stages of the drawing. After that, I just listen to music, which has been MBV and Slowdive recently.

I like to listen to music when there is too much noise outside, or inside my head

It depends, sometimes I prefer to draw with music, sometimes without. For tasks such as studying, or beginning a piece, when you need to focus, it's better to work in silence, though I sometimes prefer to listen to something, but it's okay to listen to music when crosshatching for example. When I get focus on drawing really hard, I stop hearing music.
I listen to lots of different music, because there's something interesting in every genre, but for drawing and painting I mostly like: cool jazz or slower hard bop pieces, rhythmical but rather quiet and not complex music, such as instrumental hip-hop, minimal, dub or ambient techno and so on. Dub and reggae works really nice, slow, repetitious music with nice melodies and lots of great rhythm. Lately I've discovered that lots of Brazilian and latin-american music in general is great for drawing, namely samba, bossa nova and MPB, especially in summer. Rather relaxed jazz rap albums like De La Soul, Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest and so on are good for drawing too.
Classical music can be nice too, but I'm slowly discovering it so I don't know much about it. Debussy and Satie are nice for drawing wsince their music is usually slow and soft.
Music for me depends on the way I feel, time of a day, and weather outside, so for example when it's sunny and warm like it is right now, I listen mostly to jazz, reggae and Latin-American music.
