How do you make the colors match?

try and error? picking from the background? adjusting if afterwards? everybody have his own method.

What do you mean? For the backrest of the chair and the "reflection" of her arm, I picked colors from the image. The rest, I start by chosing a middle value that I gauge by eye would match the surrounding, paint the main shapes and then go darker and lighter, depending of the turning of the form. Within the figures themselves, I'll pick the colors I already used.
