I know that this sort of thread is looked down upon but generally it's people who haven't started yet who are scared or don't know where to start. I've been drawing for more than a few years now, studying, improving, making projects. Some things went well other didn't and I kept soldiering on... but lately I just CAN'T draw. It's like my mind is a blank slate and can only lazily draw practice figures or heads or basic perspective stuff. I've been looking at my old sketchbooks and I drew so much stuff from buildings to vehicles to attempts at animation, and that was the stuff I didn't throw away.
Anyone else with a few years of experience also faced this sort of art block? It's absolutely brutal compared to what happens in the beginning when it's just a matter of finding courage to try things out. This is like looking into an empty well in the desert, I'm getting seriously depressed. It's not a matter of motivation (I WANT to draw just as much) or skill or time, there are just no ideas. I've tried using this slump as an occasion to study harder but it's not the same when you don't have any problems to solve (in the sense that I have nothing to apply those studies to). WTF can I do?!

Yes, I took a several year long break

It's a mental thing, too many expectations

>several year long break
Damn... I can't afford to do that. I've taken a few days off from both drawing and looking at art on social media like I sometimes did when I was burned out but it didn't do much this time,

I've been in the same place OP, but honestly the best thing you can do for yourself is always maintain self discipline. If really want to know what separates the armature and pro artists its not how good you are but how focused and disciplined your are at your trade.

Write down your ideas for projects! It can be anything but more importantly follow though with them. Seriously set a scheduled time/ that you will always use for your art. It doesn't matter what it is, ideas just don't pop up complete and polished. It is always something vague at first. Sketch first then commit to it 100% when you have a good feeling about it.

I'm saying you should put your nose to grindstone but treat your work/practice as full time job. You wouldn't flake or slack off on a real job would you? Above all have pride in your work. No that doesn't mean you should feel good passing off shit, but always think if someone else saw your work and actually needed to use it in illustrations and whatever and the time they need to spending fixing or editing your work.
>>
I have this problem too. Comfort zoning all day, no ideas. I have a lot to learn and apply though, but even doing that is hard for me at the moment

I feel like no matter what I draw, I won't get anywhere. Those basic comfort drawings I do might aswell be random lines on paper with no purpose.

You can try posting your art and get feedback on what you should work on.

I was about to say that procrastination isn't really the problem but what I'm drawing may as well count as procrastinating... Maybe switching to a planned out schedule will make something happen in my brain.
I already have a printout that I made but I never used it, so I'll start tomorrow. Thanks!

Hard to do since I post anything decent for the sake of putting out work online. I only have really rough stuff like pic related.

Either go read a book about drawing or draw from life, other than drawing with your magical "intuition"
>>
when this happens to me I go back to what I wanted to draw when I started and for me that is dragons, warriors and sexy women maybe the same can help you.

OP here. Trying to do this with a little success, but I'm mostly still stuck. It's the first time I've had trouble against a blank page in some 4 years of drawing, still no idea what to do.
In the meanwhile I'm studying.

Sounds like a retard who'd rather spend years reinventing the wheel rather than weeks/months taking the advice of teachers for virtually the same result.
>>
I have a question for you op have you ever actually studied how to finnish whole projects or is it just individual studies?
>>
>>3063510
What do you mean?
>>
>>3062297
Try pure aesthetic abstract work. No reference nothing other than materials.
>>
>>3058228
OP, have you tried switching mediums? I've found that nothing gives me more ideas than switching mediums and trying a new perspective on art. I've found that often we box ourselves into one particular way of doing something, which gets in the way of learning. Try it.
>>
>>3058228
I've felt like this for the past 5 months.

I used to draw finished stuff a lot more frequently, but ever since I saw other artist friends succeed and improve even further than me, I ask myself why I even try anymore and doodle random things instead.

It's like my self-confidence took a dive, and drawing something finished feels like an impossible task.
>>
>>3065227
Comparisons definitely played a role in this... I really hate my work and I always wished I could improve faster or work longer hours.
>>
>>3065227
Three. Fucking. Years.
I'm at a brick wall. I have friends and a crush who have gained confidence and popularity and I'm jelly off the charts. I cannot stop comparing myself to them.
I know I could easily catch up to them with a little practice but I can't. I have drawn a few times in these past couple of years. Each time I see how close I am but I'm also reminded of where they are.

tl;dr I'm a huge narcissist who can't get over myself. Help.

OP here... I hoped for more people who found a way out and definitely didn't expect others who were stuck in this rut.

I've managed to work a little bit on a project by taking a look at my workflow and sacrificing some things in favor of something more streamlined. Working fast for me is important so getting to a finished rough drawing quickly allowed me to get a few pages of roughs done. I still feel like I've got no energy to get through the whole designing and pencilling but at least I've got something to work with.

OP, it seems what you're going through isn't really an art block as much as you hitting a plateau. Every one will hit this sort of thing in anything they do in life. One point that imitates this dilemma is doing the same exercise routine everyday or every other day..

you mention of the fact you can "only lazily draw practice figures or heads or basic perspective stuff" BUT that it is NOT a matter of motivation since you WANT to draw but that there's no ideas.

I think there lies your problem. Some other anon suggest changing up the media you use. I think that may spark something in you. As far as ideas, if you are determined to want to be an artist, you are going to have to use your entire environment around you as your source of ideas. Even if it means drawing the handle bars of your faucet, or the texture of the grass on your yard or the shadows that form on your street during different times of the day.

professional illustrators, painters, even animators that I know never isolate their choice of practice based on what's popular or what normies think is art to get them going.

art is a visual subject requiring the artist to capture visual things, whatever that might be.
>>
I think this problem is more common than you think, it's just not talked about. I spent the last three years completing maybe a little over ten works I'd be okay showing anybody. I was also depressed at the time. Sometimes you need a change of pace in your life to get back to where you need to be.

>>3064862
This, definitely this. I do mostly digital stuff but lately I've been getting into painting and I love it. It's hard and I suck, but I love it.

Also, try drawing new subject matters. I got started drawing porn this way too.
