This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies, however, all forms of stylization is welcome here. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Lol, OP is a faggot confirmed. There were several drawings better than that one and you should've at least included a couple of the other decent ones in the thumbnail. I swear man, this fucking plebs with their trash tier tumblr taste is starting to get annoying.
>>

>learning to draw cute stuff
learn to draw first, faggot.
the dude on the right's feet are not in perspective correctly so it looks like he is floating.
also, your ability to draw hands is made apparent by how eager you are to hide them as well as how bad they are on the girl(?) on the right.
another thing, you seem to have a style that makes it difficult tell if the character is a dude or a girl (contrary to what tumblr might tell you this is the most retarded thing you can do in character design), and it doesn't seem on purpose. a good design and style should inform anyone who looks at it to instantly "feel" the personality of the characters. learn more about shape language and really make it obvious what those characters are supposed to be

I posted this character a while back, and some of the feedback I got was that the post was very boring, and etc... So I went back to the drawing board, and did something that conveys a lot more personality. Thoughts on it?

Also, any glaring errors in terms of proportions and whatnot that I'm not fully seeing. It's a rough sketch mind you, I'm gonna be polishing it up over the weekend.

>>3059503
That's the intention. Yandere waifus, never got why they were so popular, but they are. Also, a lot of girls like to self-insert into these sorts of characters (see Harley Quinn, Jynx, etc...). I felt the Yandere elements fit well with her abilities since she collects blood from her foes with that wheel to do blood magic, and when she maxes out her meter, she turns into a werewolf. So her being batshit crazy seems to work for that sorta stuff, and I like how it adapts the LRRH story.

This is awesome thanks a lot man. It's just what I came here for.

And she does have a hood, it's just down for this pose as I felt it looked a lot better. I figured it'd be something like "her hood comes down as she starts losing sanity," (I know all this sounds edgy, but remember it's for a "fighting game").

And I know why people like yanderes, haha, I was being facetious. I was around for the Mirai Nikki and Higurashi days on /a/.

>>3059570
Thanks man, I do try to listen to people, I just don't often reply if it's not overly clear what they're trying to get across, and there's a lot of trolls around here sometimes, it's part of why I decided to stick to the trip, as one of them was trying to impersonate me. But sometimes I do get some legit good advice, like the kind anon above you. It's exactly what I was hoping for when I posted. And last time I posted, another helpful anon gave me some pointers for rendering muscles, which I put to work in another piece I did. You're right though, I still got lots to improve. I think I need to do a lot more studies, so I'm going through Hampton's course over the next 8 weeks, as my anatomy is certainly lacking I feel.

I think the design looks pretty cute. My only major issue is the ribbon, where the overlap of the ribbon tails looks like she's wearing a tie and a bow tie at the same time. Also, the pentagram on her bag reads like the anarchy symbol from afar. Maybe adding more detailing in the embroidery will read more occult than punk.

As for the wheel, it's a cool idea, but maybe sticking it on her back except for maybe long range fling attacks or her ultimate/special moves will make posing her arms and silhouette easier.

Super nitpick that's based on personal preference, but I'm not a fan of the vest's tails. The way it's laying over the skirt looks awkward and doesn't have the stiffness that vests/jackets have.

From what i have read, before diving into stylization you need to have good fundies, does this mean that i should stick to realism until i "git gud" and then i can add stylization to my drawings? I would like to draw with a bit of anime-ish style but also get decent fundies at the same time but this sounds kind of absurd, how should i proceed?

Pic is not my work
>>
>>3060135

>>3060143
The fuck you mean? Just having basic knowledge of the fundies will help you immensely. It's what separates decent artists from deviantART trash.

>>3060135
Do both, regardless of which you do that day, it will lead to improvement eventually. Study your weak points.
>>
>>3060135
Honestly, go with learning to stylize and fundies at the same time. There's a difference between good fundies and having absolute mastery of anatomy, perspective, etc. Fundies are literally fundamental skills, like understanding how to convey form or line quality. Expand your fundamental studies and use them to prop up what you actually want to draw.

Yeah, i was kind of thinking about going with both but i dont have the slighest idea of how to make a decent ratio out of it like, if i focus on fundies and stylize on the side i will get bored since fundies are boring but neccesary, but if i stick with stylized and on the side practice fundies i will end up being dA shit-tier

Also, the pentagram on her bag reads like the anarchy symbol from afar. Maybe adding more detailing in the embroidery will read more occult than punk.
Noted. Her outfit is inspired by what the girls in Babymetal have. I wanted something that was very metal, while still having the Goth lolita elements to it. You're right about the ribbon though, I'll probably make some changes to that.

Also, her bag is being changed into a book, so that will be a lot more detailed and fleshed out.

>As for the wheel, it's a cool idea, but maybe sticking it on her back except for maybe long range fling attacks or her ultimate/special moves will make posing her arms and silhouette easier.
I'm looking into a variety of fighting game characters for move inspiration, most notably Tira from Soul Calibur, and Bridget from Guilty Gear. I'm also looking at the Logarius Wheel moveset in Bloodborne, and some of Bayonetta's torture attacks. There's still a lot to think about in terms of how she'd move when she fights.

The one on the right is a pretty easy pose to draw so its seen abit too often.
The anatomy and pose on the left one is pretty solid although it may need tweaking in the hip/leg joint area. Something about how low the legs are in position to the upper pelvis shape seem off, although that just might be me. I would go with left.
Heck, why not just do both?

I had to sleep at some point in there, but I'm still here. Thanks for the information. I've never used Microns. Your line weight has a distinctive style and varies beautifully... Is that just a speed / weight technique with the pens or are you outlining the thickest lines and filing them in?

But now, for three weeks now I started using white paint with a fine brush

>>
>>3057987
>>
>>3061074
No lineart is done through the use of silhouettes, you gotta have a pretty solid foundation on painting first though.

To get better at painting, you first gotta understand light, and how it works. It's not exactly shading, unless you're cell shading, which is totally different, and it's pretty much always complemented by clean lineart. Once you remove the lineart, you're jumping straight into painting. For that, I'd say Alla Prima is a good read to get you thinking in terms of light properly, and Color & Light by Gurney are good reads. I can't fully vouch for Gurney's book yet personally, as I'm still going through it myself, but it's fairly recommended around these parts.

Thanks for the advice, I don't know why I don't see these things until it is pointed out. I know it's not really salvageable now, but I tried to adjust some saturation/levels to see if I could make her pop out more.

When working with a boring light source (like this one, that is just a front-light), it should still be possible to make it look interesting, right? Or is it just recommended to choose more interesting light sources from the start?
>>
>>3061960
I think there's basically two paths you can take, you can either use better lighting and focus more on the rendering or you can do what I said and just use lighter, but flat colors to bring out the line art more (old school comic book style if you get what I mean)

no right or wrong answer there

Not the faggot you replied to, but the only things that bug me is the stiff pose of the character (theres a ton of ref pics of a dude holding a gun on dA, kind of looks like Ninja from Die Antwoord) and the femurs look a little short in relation to the tibia/fibulas. What kind of answer are you expecting? 90% of the time people are just going to tell you to study the artists you like and try to emulate them. Asking for a solution for something that is entirely skill based is a bit ridiculous and frustrating to answer.
It's always going to come down to the fundamentals.
Edge control, understanding 3 point lighting, how specific materials react to light, brush economy, composition, anatomy, etc.
The better you understand the fundamentals, the easier it will be to understand an artist's workflow and how they get certain effects. No one is withholding information from you...

Yeah, that right line and the little wrinkles moving across the underboob are creating that effect. The boobs should be stretching the fabric and tenting right beneath them, more so if the waist fabric is loose and if the bust is big.

But when I look at the amount of detail some people put into their work, the skill and everything, then I open the software to continue my drawing I feel like a joke. The gap seems so abysmal I start thinking I'll just never get to their level no matter how hard I try. It's then when I feel like I should just quit.

It's nice, especially the colouring. However the pose looks stiff and unnatural, especially the hands. It's a bit boring and no one actually stands like that. Try something more dynamic next time, maybe?

>My sides, are you autistic?
Yes. This is 4Chan. Most people here are autistic to some varying degree... Irrespective of whether they've been diagnosed.
I do find your interpretation funny. I laughed.
It's an excerpt from a conversation... I'm trying to capture a moment and an expression. I would hope that the preceding and subsequent panels would tell the rest of the story...
Ironically enough, the dialog and expression are a reply to a snarky asshole comment made by the off-frame character whose POV we are borrowing in the shot... It's why I selected this panel. The irony is not lost on me.
It does make me think about how I could have better used the available space though. Thanks.
I'm trying to simplify for a comic without over-simplifying, but the subject matter is something I'm intimately familiar with.
I know I'm feeding a troll but... eh... I regret nothing.

When I was at university, I had a teacher ( who was also an artist) who gave this advice to the students, "Even if you draw very well, how much do you actually CARE about art?" 90% of my time is devoted to my art, whereas the other 10% would be eating, sleeping, and all the everyday essentials. The point is if you are serious about pursuing art as a career, you have to be thinking about it every day. In essence, it has to be something you truly care about. Just having the ability is not enough. For example, say you had a girlfriend: would you choose the girl or the art? You would literally have to choose art; that's how focused you would have to be… I’m not sure if that's something you should say to someone in that situation, but you really have to be all in. People who are just kind of beating around the bush and not going all in, they're not going to make it.

This was quoted by Range Murata in an interview.

In other words you got to really want it if you want to be like those professional artists that you aspire to become. It's not like they are some supernatural people that are given the talent to draw the moment they entered this world. They worked at their craft for years and years and slowly cultivated it into a style of their liking through countless trial and errors.

Believe me, I feel the same way about art, and there are times when I just want to give up and lay down the pencil because everything I draw is just shit sometimes, but if you just get over that moment of pain and struggle, you will see that it was all worth it in the end. If it were easy everyone would do it. The fact that it is hard makes it all the more desirable. And in the end, more rewarding.

So keep fighting the good fight!

Gambare!!!
>>
>>3063642
Terrible example. Caring about something doesn't mean you should give up something else, that's obsession. It's unhealthy and it will ruin you.If you cared about art, you would take breaks, you'd meet friends, go on vacation, read books, etc. Life feeds art.
>>
>>3063424
This shit looks fine there are plenty of people out there willing to pay for this quality of work, just go network your shit and start getting money.
Don't make getting better your only motivation because it will happen even if you aren't conscious of it.

>>
>>3064218
>>3064218
The layout and composition is reasonably polished... It would be par for the course on a good webcomic. The facial expression fits the panel. Just some things to think about... Unless that equation is going to be important, I'd have composed that panel from behind the professor, back to the class, in front of the board. Figure at the left 1/3 border, partially obscuring the board. View from behind and only slightly to the right. If he was talking I'd turn his head to the right, if he was silent I'd leave it facing the pen. More impersonal.
I'd put the pen crossing the x on the exponent in the second function, because that would be the last thing he wrote. Also right handed people cross their f's and t's left-to-right.
I'm not ripping on your piece, I'm just word-vomiting about specific details of a composition because... Blame it on whatever you want because autism or OCD or whatever. I'd just draw it but I've already shut all my shit down for the night and this phone is unsuitable for ... Everything, actually.

Learn figure drawing, your drawing looks extremely flat because you don't understand how the human body works in 3D space, you're essentially symbol drawing the body, if that makes any sense

face looks too simple in comparison to the body, i'd say that's why it looks out of place
also as >>3062044 said, proportions are off and it looks terribly flat

¨wrinkles¨ if you can even call them that are just nonexistent, look up how cloth and drapery works, i recommend Burne Hogarth's book on the subject

Are you trying to make a study of this image, or use it as reference?
1. your colors are too dark and unsaturated. this person did not use dark brown for shadows like you did. too much dark everywhere, on the lips, eyes, nose, and hair too.
2. they probably used the soft round brush for the whole thing.
3. the head on yours is too thin, while this person's jaw is rounder

You don't know the first thing about anything it seems. The hair looks so unnatural and uncomfortable to have. The hand grabbing the tool looks the same (if not smaller) than the other hand, while it should be bigger because foreshortening. Her head seems to be facing forward while her expression is almost in 3/4. Her left arm is completely fucked, it looks broken and painful. Her right leg is extremely long. Her whole body is disproportionate.

I wouldn't be worrying about color if I were you. You should go back to work on your fundies a lot before drawing anything else, let alone trying to color.

You could use a lot more contrast with the reds. The skirt and the cape blend into each other, some more shadows could help them look more distinct. Additionally, the fabric of the cape looks rather flat.
The blood(?) splatters is so vibrant it almost looks like strawberry jam. Perhaps you could darken it down to make it better resemble the actual color of blood.
>>
>>3064751
>>3064753
Yeah, I agree about the cape and the blood. I'll leave it for now, and come back to it later to do some finishing touches.

Thanks a bunch.

Not too sure about the highlight on the skirt either, it's too strong in contrast. I feel I should go a bit darker.

Its because as soon as someone begins to make it they get the fuck out of here because this place is fucking garbage.
The shit you guys put out is so fucking ugly and all you have is to try and tear down other people because of your own ineptitude. This thread is actually pretty decent for asg standards too. Like seriously half of you are NO WHERE NEAR good enough to be giving critiques on ANYTHING. Everytime nosebro posts its like a car wreck. He is completely beginner tier yet he thinks he can tell people shit is symbol drawing. THIS ENTIRE THREAD is filled with people who can't yet visually specially think in 3d.

The people who are good here are 'Jacer' with his 'Jaced' 'Jacings'. This thread should be fucking purged. Even Kyle fucking traces. LIke whats the point guys? If you are tracing someone they should just be making art and you should be enjoying it. Not clamoring for attesting on their coat tails.
