Most of these are based on photos, yet the backgrounds are monochrome. So I'll just comment on that: It looks weird and amateurish because we can see the brushstrokes. Making a flat, uniform plane of color might be hard and exausting, but it's something all artists should know how to do.

Yeah it's more of an active creative choice to supplement the tone with most of them. Like >>3055823 I just just manically brushing the background and ruining the brush all over the canvas. Even on things where I have done solid multi-coat stuff I generally still end up weathering and throwing the canvases around and shit anyway to dirty them and fuck them up. Like Zinger >>3055805
was a much better solid color but then I spilled shit on it and had it stacked with all the others so now it's all fucked up

protip - take or leave is fine. Forgo the pencil draft and paint directly onto the canvas. Then you don't have to worry about the lines and you'll treat the painting in a different way by seeing the shade/shape/color differently.
>>3055908
>Forgo the pencil draft and paint directly onto the canvas.
Yeah I'm keeping a relative amount of continuity for the current series I'm doing. I like the kind of uncanny valley aesthetic I'm getting from drawing out or graphite transferring first.
also I'm not really a paint on blank canvas type. It's something I'm certainly interested in working on more but it's also something that I kind of think of as a waste of time trying to dial in what I'm looking for after. That could work better if I had the attention abilities to focus on one thing at a time.
But yeah I have a couple of times gone retardedly dark to accentuate highlights to remember and shit, which yeah I've been trying to avoid doing dipshit shit like that.
>>3055927
wrong webm
>>3055927
Gotchya, yeah it does take a particular close focus (I think this can be practiced/trained) but imo it's totally worth it because it's like the nature of the painting totally changes if that makes sense.
Try it out when you finish this series, or when you want to paint outside of the series. It's really frustrating at first (zoning your focus) but you just let go and trust yourself.
>>3055935
lol how do you get those webms mixed? Like seeing your painting process btw.

Oh yeah it totally makes sense. I think >>3055799 may be the only thing of these I've done with only like a 30 second sketch before I started painting. It was also one where I started and "finished" in one sitting, whereas most of the others are done in steps and shit.
Pic related was a sketch on canvas and have painted within an hour type of thing.
>Try it out when you finish this series, or when you want to paint outside of the series
Yeah I've been planning on doing a series of selfie portraits that will be done with no graphite once I'm done enough with the 100 series of acrylics I've been working on now. Or next I get sick as shit of essentially coloring in drawings or tracings.
it'll be good to resist my ocd impulses for awhile.

just figuring it out now. Went from iphoto to final cut, rotated and scaled, exported h264 then used whatever converter website.

Good work anon, I've said this before but seeing you post your work is getting me itching to get back into painting and just do it. It's been a while for me, and you know when you break out of habit it can be hard to start again. So thanks painter anon.

You know I'm gonna say just go for it. Any effort is better than nothing and it can definitely be an esteem booster just to have created a tangible thing. Doesn't matter if it sucks if you're at least making something that appeals to you.
>It's been a while for me
Yeah it was like that for me too. I did art school as a kid and shit in high school and a few classes in college and shit but I was always into pastels. Hadn't really ever fucked with acrylic before sadfleck. Just bought the cheapest shit I could on Amazon and wrecked all of it.
>>3055964
Yeah I'm sure there's a better way. I tried a freeware app and it was shittier than the website. I'd bet converter or after effects probably allow webm conversion and thats something I'll get to at some point I reckon
>>3055968

bruh you forgot to make the background consist of LEGO bricks
Nice work though!
>>3056346
lol there have been many internal conversations about whether or not to go full lego. The grey was just me using the rest of the paint at first but then I started to like the look. I'd call that one like 80% done. 60% if I do legos.
If anyone ever looks at this shit, what is your thoughts on doing pic related?
Doing a mashup of the summation of Van Gogh's early work with Alien. Plus look at the hands and everything. Van Gogh started painting at 27, so did I. Van Gogh was like 32 when he did Potato eaters. I'm 29. That gives me 6 years before I start dismembering parts. 8 years to go. He made 900 paintings, I'm at 110.
I'm gonna crush that dickhead's record.
>>3055758

>>3056813

Sorry OP but I really don't like that you're tracing all these.
Please do something else, try to be more creative. I don't think anyone will be impressed by this if they knew you were tracing.

thats all I hear reading posts like yours. Don't like it? Make your own. Or else fuck right off.
>>3057056
>Sorry OP but I really don't like that you're tracing all these.
Pfft it's a graphite transfer pfft.
> I don't think anyone will be impressed by this if they knew you were tracing.
Pfft it's called graphite transfer pfft. And I've generally found that the people that aren't "impressed" by "tracing" generally don't "paint."
>Please do something else, try to be more creative.
Always open to suggestions!
should I finish this one or leave the guy unpainted and call it a metaphor or some bullshit?
>>3058134
not that guy but wouldn't a graphite transfer of a photo still be tracing?
Don't get me wrong, I've used transfers too for painting. So. It's pretty much tracing.
I don't really care much for your work either but at least you're making something I guess. But it isn't really anything special. It's actually pretty average. You do you.
>>3058191
>not that guy but wouldn't a graphite transfer of a photo still be tracing?
yeah it's a joke. Graphite Transfer is just the uppity way of saying tracing. Shoulda been more clear I guess.
>I don't really care much for your work either but at least you're making something I guess.
I'll take it!
>But it isn't really anything special. It's actually pretty average.
Pretty average critique. I'll definitely make an effort going forward to be less average.

Did you let your cat drink that paintbrush water?
>>3058266
yeah he occasionally drinks a little bit. He mostly just hovers over it though because it's fucking paint water. And I looked it up and latex based paint is non-toxic. Plus Bogie is a belligerent idiot psycho that is alive in spite of the notion of a fair or just universe.
He is featured in >>3055816 and >>3055797 and >>3055766
>>3055758
You're tracing all of these and they still look like this? Come on man
>>3058283
I love the tracing meme on /ic/. I learned how to proportionately draw faces "free hand" and spent hundreds of hours doing that shit like 15 years ago. I used to do near-photorealistic pastel portraits from hand in high school.
Also, the intention of these is that anyone can make art, kinda. It's the cheapest shit and the easiest method to make whatever is appealing to you. Still maybe working on getting a painting instructional spoof series going where the gag is that they're like dirty and kind of not great and they all came from 4chan memes etc. The goal definitely isn't for me to try and actually make really good works, because that's a big hinderance. It's liberating to tell yourself you're making schlock with no stakes, and that literally anything is better than nothing.
>Acrylic
Switch to oil unless you want your art to look mediocre forever
>>3058330
Yeah I'm gearing up to do a series of selfie portraits in oil. I've enjoyed making Acrylic schlock, and I like the dry or die and layering of it. Plus it's a novel aesthetic that has gotten pretty positive feedback from artists and art adults irl.
But at a certain point I guess I can't keep riding the "it's shitty on purpose lol" excuse.
look i made a boat
>>3058206
Sorry for lazy critique, I'm just lazy as fuck and felt obligated to at least say something so it didnt look like I came in to shit on tracing. Whoops.
I guess to build on the vague notion of "average", some of these just feel unfinished? It sounds like what you're going for is making stuff to make it, so I don't know if you would get more out of spending more time on one piece. But like on Downey Jr and George Costanza, there's like hazy underdefined areas and white of the canvas coming through that feels like you just laid the groundwork but didn't go back. You have something there that you could go over again and finish. I think that's why it feels "average".
Like the anon who suggested switching to oil, you could even do oil glazed on top of these acrylics to push them more and give them more finishing polish. I think a finished overly polished oil painting of a meme would be amazing.
Was that a little better, or still useless? Tl;dr everything feels unfinished, so if you consider any truly finished, that makes it average. But you've got the foundation going good if they're not finished?
>>3058362
>I guess to build on the vague notion of "average", some of these just feel unfinished?
they all are
>But like on Downey Jr and George Costanza, there's like hazy underdefined areas and white of the canvas coming through that feels like you just laid the groundwork but didn't go back.
they're not done. I have 120 paintings in production. I just hop around and sometimes kill a painting in one sitting and sometimes keep them un-"finished" for months at a time. I love the concept of wabi sabi and I love the concept of, yes, tracing, a meme I stole from the internet and making it worse with paint in one impulsive run, then slowly dialing it in as the problems stare at me.
Also there's been some intention that I would finish or "fix" each of them as a youtube series, so some shit like >>3055785 has been waiting for me to paint with hot sauces.
But also I totally think part of what makes art interesting can be the laziness. I got really into all the giant Rembrants and stuff at the Rijksmuseum and how the painters would often phone in feet and dogs and stuff that they didn't give a shit about.
>Like the anon who suggested switching to oil, you could even do oil glazed on top of these acrylics to push them more and give them more finishing polish
Totally! I was thinking I would try it doing that on >>3055766 or >>3055773.
>Tl;dr everything feels unfinished, so if you consider any truly finished, that makes it average
I've considered them as props that are going to be destroyed or damaged on camera the entire time tbphwyf.
>But you've got the foundation going good if they're not finished?
Thanks man thats pretty much how I see it.

>>3055758
Good work anon keep at it.
Although i did notice your drawing skills or at least your proportions are pretty fucking spot on, but the values and feel of the forms is not there. It is pretty weird. Normally people gradually get better at all those things fairly equally, but your have a pretty fucking sharp divide.
I just picked up traditional painting this month. Having a supper hard time maintaining forms and mixing the appropriate value and temperature color.
>>3060181
>Although i did notice your drawing skills or at least your proportions are pretty fucking spot on,
I'm cheating on almost all of them. Essentially all of the images are manipulated and edited and framed in photoshop, printed, graphite transfer to canvas, paint. I'll generally start prep 5-10 new canvases a week and have them lined and ready to paint. Pic related becomes >>3055885 for example
>but the values and feel of the forms is not there.
I've kid of been chasing that in a way. Not to say that I necessarily COULD make a technically perfect or impressive painting if I wanted to, part of the whole goof of the process that has been allowing me to keep grinding is accepting that I'm taking a perfectly good image and making it worse with my efforts. Laziness is definitely a bit of a theme in the series, and getting good form and value takes time. I put a considerably more amount of time and layers on the face of >>3055815 than most of the others and I feel pretty gay in a good away about how most of it looks.
Also the process is generally a "use every part of the buffalo" thing with the paint in a way that is self-sabotaging on purpose maybe? Again, I don't mean to say that I necessarily could nail values and color if I tried, but a lot of the look is that I'm not necessarily trying that hard.
>It is pretty weird.
yeah hopefully in a way that'll work.
>I just picked up traditional painting this month.
Nice. I had never done an acrylic painting before last May or whenever. Went to art school and stuff as a kid but I was mostly into pastels and printmaking. Didn't really paint or draw anything at all from age 19-27.
>Having a supper hard time maintaining forms and mixing the appropriate value and temperature color.
Yeah I'm probably not the guy to give any super useful tips on how to improve your technique. But it's always good to remember that literally anything is better than nothing.
waste of paint, the series. little skill or merit involved. it's like the painting equivalent of kiddies making meme videos on youtube for their 15min of fame.
>>3060912
>waste of paint, the series.
anything is better than nothing brah
>little skill or merit involved.
thats kind of the goof. The point is that you too(!) can paint their own mems!
>it's like the painting equivalent of kiddies making meme videos on youtube for their 15min of fame.
tbhwyf they're being produced as props to be finished/destroyed in meme videos on youtube for 15min of fame. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM0Gtgu4ynY
plslike&subscribetygb
So technically it's not really the "painting equivalent" of that, it's literally that.
>>3058330
Lols, tell that to Marcia Burtt
>>3058598
That potato looks truly realistic, bravo.
>>3061159
it's the centerpiece of the series
>>3061184
I didn't notice it until it dried I don't think but that's awesome that you noticed that. It's one of my favorite things on any of the paintings, because I was thinking of doing those 2 as parts of a rainbow series of faces and it looked like Jlaw was looking at it. Ended up making the Jlaw one red but now blue Eva Green is looking at.
>inb4 autism
>>3060856
>I'm cheating on almost all of them.
I don't consider tracing as cheating. I think any thing that you can do is fare game and a good image is the end goal.
>>3060856
>Laziness is definitely a bit of a theme in the series
So you know what to do. I think you have to practice with intent to get better and exposing your weakness is part of it.
Fucking hang in there anon and dont let the tracing hate bring your down, but you might want to draw more.
>>3061360
>I don't consider tracing as cheating. I think any thing that you can do is fare game and a good image is the end goal.
Yeah I don't really either. Every actual painter I've talked to his willing to trace if that's the aesthetic/time situation they're going for. I just roll with eating the shit here since art on /ic/ apparently starts and stops at sketching.
>So you know what to do. I think you have to practice with intent to get better and exposing your weakness is part of it.
Yeah for sure. I say I'm not trying that hard and it's supposed to look weird to prevent getting discouraged but I am pretty actively trying different shit and wanting to improve. Shroedinger's irony.
>Fucking hang in there anon and dont let the tracing hate bring your down, but you might want to draw more.
Thanks man. Yeah I spent all day moving my work space from the kitchen to a new set up in my living room and I'm thinking I'll christen it with a from-scratch drawing to painting or oil or both.
