Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Uhm, i get your point , i should be more specific. I think regarding the rendering as a whole ? I tried to have some blended and wet zones but also some rough spots as well. But it still looks a bit off.
Also , do you guys think the stones are somehow unnatural? I know they look alike because i used kind of the same shape for them. But i'm concerned about the texture and the values here.

What do I set this stuff to when I'm drawing?

Also why is the Width not measured in the resolution? I put the width as 1000 because i thought it was the same thing as the resoultion and the image resolution was really really high.

This I think. 72 is photoshop default and is used by most people for everyday online images, 300 is used for printing. The color is maybe also important for printing, like using CMYK but you can convert something to that later.

And i think the general rule for file type is png for things with clean lines you want to keep, like logos or precise sketches, and jpg for everything else.

Is it better to zoom way in or zoom way out when I'm doing lines?

It depends on the size of the tablet and the size of the line you want to draw. I think it is easier to just find a distance that you feel comfortable doing on the tablet and then zoom in/out so the line on screen fits that distance. Hand rest is personal preference but it is probably a good idea to not put too much weight on the tablet.

I'm getting kinda tired of dumping my art into an empty vaccum. Do you guys post anywhere where you get feedback regularly? I don't have a blog, maybe that would help?

Also don't worry man, I wanted to start at 15 and felt like i was too old back then, looking up to the child prodigies. I let time pass without drawing and now I'm your age. Wishing I had started earlier or continued when i was 15. We're still young, just keep drawing and don't stop

I think it's because compared to how much we've lived, a year turns into a much smaller ratio every year.

When you're 6 years old, a year is 1/6th of your entire existence. When you're 30, it's 1/30th. So it feels like it's going faster.

My parents are 50 and they talk about memories when they were my age. I still remember when they were 30, which is not so far from my own age. Fuck it scares me.

It's scary to see the differences between my generation and the younger one, the fact that there are people born in the 21st century who are soon gonna be adults.

I mean, our daily activities are also a huge part of it. In childhood when people live different experiences for the first time this makes every day look longer. But the older we get the more mundane our daily routine is. This fools our brains to think that time is going faster than when we we're young. So if you feel like everything is going too fast, you have to do something drastic to change your routine. Then problem is, you maybe even have to leave your familiar environment for it to have an effect.

Improve your image library.
Do photo and/or video studies. After that you could start adding mileage days to your drawing routine (i.e days in which you focus fully on drawing certain elements of the body).

At some point apply what you have learned/exercised on a project (a full finished pic so you can see how much you have improved/suck and go forward from there).

Rinse and repeat.

I'm in a similar boat. I was watching Sinix' new video and he said he started making art friends by going to different art related events like life drawing sessions, cafe sketching or plen air painting. I haven't tried it yet but that's probably the best option to meet art friends.

I use this book a lot its pretty handy

I was about to post something about it too. Cath, stay away from the soft brush for a while and work with the hard round. You can blend if you want but blend manually or with the mixer brush. You're over using the soft brush and it makes all your paintings look kinda flat and wonky. Also work on measuring and accurately constructing shapes. Your faces, eyes and noses in particular tend to look symbol drawn and flat with wonky perspective. Try to learn the structure of everything on the face and try constructing plenty of noses and mouths from imagination. This will help you apply what you know about form when you draw from ref.

For me personally, I like the tangibility of traditional art.
I could print out digital artwork but it just doesn't feel the same, it doesn't feel like I made it.

I do art mostly as a hobby, I like to try all different media, from pencil and ink to paint and I'd love to try some forms of printing like woodblock printing or intaglio too if I get the chance.
I want to create something, something that exists in itself, something I could give away or leave behind for those that might care and that feeling just doesn't seem to work with digital art.

Though I do not think that digital art is lesser work, I've seen some great digital paintings that have inspired me as much as traditional works, I'm just not interested in using those tools myself.

The expression in the ref seems to have her eyebrows a bit thicker or shaped than what you painted. It's part of what sells her facial expression. I think the corner of the jaw is a bit too sharp, she has a much smoother transition, a rounder slope. Thats all I got for now, but I think you're on the right track.

Your values are kinda off so it looks really flat. Make her eyes and lips darker and the left side of her face should be darker since it's in shadow. Also work on your colors, I don't paint much but when I do I pick the color on my own, try it out, fail and repeat. Then if I still can't get the right color or if I'm lazy I just color pick to see what type of color I should be getting at and how I was off, then I try again. Your stuff is too unsaturated, I feel like the lips esp. should be more saturated. The greyish muted colors on her skin as well as the pink fleshy tones on her face should also be more subtle. Your painting makes it look like she has 5'0 clock shadow and a Tumblr nose. The blending is also a little too muddy and mushy for my taste. I liked the hard edge only version better and it seemed more solid. Maybe going back in to add hard edges here and there would help?

Study facial construction more. The way the scars wrap around the nose over to the cheek make it look really flat. The folds look wonky, maybe using a ref would help. Going back to the face, I feel like there's too little variation in both color and value there making it look flat. Your strokes also make the cloth look muddy and undefined. Harder edges are usually better for depicting folds. Also try using something other than blue for your shadows and highlights, it looks like you used a variation of the same color throughout but only changed the saturation and value. For example you have a pink color in the background, you could try mixing an it of that in with the blue and fiddling around until you get something you like. Or try making a multiply layer for shadows and see what a bright pink looks like on top of the blue.

Depends on the pose. For example, if they're wearing a skin tight bikini or other clothes that simply wrap tightly around the form like short shorts then you don't really have to worry about them.
