Working on hands, help is appreciated

>bottom right is just a small note for myself
>>
>>3049217
Weak thumbnail. Needs a few higher values.
>>
>>3049298
are you drawing your own hands?
>>
>>3049305
yes, the one on bottom left was from ref
>>
>>3049307
the "drawing the muscles" is useless, focus on the forms you are seeing not what's underneath them. It won't make you a better artist by pretending to know what the bones look like. Try to focus more on the actual contours and forms of the hands yours are too smooth and stylized. You won't learn that way. If you try to actually draw what you see the drawings will look worse in the beginning but you'll be better off in the end.
>>
>>3049351
also: you need to shade your drawings. drawing all these "bones" underneath the skin means you can't actually shade your drawings because all that space is taken up by your anatomy guesses. It's a good show-off thing for your sketchbook and looks impressive to normies but you are ignoring half of your drawings by not representing and learning about the light and shadows. Light is like most of what art is about, not "anatomy" unlike what /ic/ thinks.

it's ok, but all that underlying bullshit is redundant. learn the basic forms, usually muscle and bone guide are just to tell you where they are and that they exist. you don't have to draw every one, it will slow you down

A quick little op of what i'd change if I were you, but im shit at faces so feel free to disregard it
Also it wouldnt hurt if you introduced a few more colors instead of just keeping everything a greyish blue. It makes it look like you did it in grayscale and then just made a layer on top, filled it with blue and set the blending mode to color.
That's fine if that's what you're going for but color wise it becomes very boring

I like the composition! Are you going to be rendering this image to finish or are you gonna start with the final image from scratch?

Anyways, some ideas:

- Be careful with your value structure. Have dark against light against dark etc. I made the left corner of the image dark so the rim light from the guys gun pops his face out better. (If you don't want him to be the first read you shouldn't do this though).

- Have the tentacle monster come into the room! It gives the image a sense of urgency and better 3-dimentionality.

- Also you should think about what the image is about. What is the main focus etc. and build your value structure around that.

Good shit br0.
>>
>>3050303
>>3050303
YES! You are a fucking hero thanks. I will definitely steal that tentacle idea. Totally elevates the image.

Probably rendering this image to finish because I have a ton of layers/selections made But I'll clean off most of the structure/drafting line work
>>
>>3050330

No problem man. I think you should also check this thing out:

http://muddycolors.blogspot.fi/2017/03/designing-with-shape.html

I had some really big problems with my sketch work and somebody on /ic/ posted this. It's nothing crazy or new but still really helpful for getting a clear and simple start for your images and shit. Rock on mangh!
>>
>>3049183
the thumbnail looks nice, not so much when you open it. You either refine this or get less "precise" with those edges.
>>
>>3050303
Is this the size/resolution you painted at or did you downscale it? If not what size did you paint at originally?
>>
I'm trying to start doing more interesting/dynamic drawings and I'm sketching this one up here. Anyone have ideas/tips/redlines on how to make it look more balanced or a better way to have the guy in the middle be the focal point? The premise is a cowboy being surrounded by about 2 - 4 dudes but I'm not sure how to place them in the image and keep it interesting and balanced.

Working on this recently, wondering if the chrome body is coming out alright. I'm not all that great with painting metals, and I am hoping that the reflected light on it makes coherent sense. Also, its not quite finished, so there's a lot of empty space left at the moment, pls no bully.

Chrome reflects it's environment at like 95% opacity. I'd suggest painting a chrome ball and then using it as reference for the robot. Did quick example but it's far from accurate
>>
>>3049633
the cliche is strong with this one
>>
>>3051194
sure. there's a layer for the shadow values, I interpreted the light source to be almost directly above her. I just blobbed on shade with a brush and set the layer to multiply. then there's a glow layer where I added the ambient occlusion (reflecting the bright sand) and the hilights, and finally a layer for hard shadows like under the joints and stuff. isn't too difficult

>>
>>3042771
I've found that Xiumin ref and I desaturated both pictures for comparison. I've color coded it to show you my perspective on value.
You'll need to brush up on values, rendering, and how to identify soft, hard, and lost edges.
You should go back and rework your values first with an opaque brush you're comfortable with.
Then, block in the colors. Finally, refine your edges once your values and colors are looking good.
Try not to abuse tools like lasso tool, smudge tool, or airbrush.
They can be used to create fantastic rendering but you'll need to start with solid brushes.
Another advice in painting is to enhance your highlight by adding tone close to it so that it creates a contrast.
Here's a photo with all the edges labeled in. You can find other photos and drawings to look at and try to learn edges from that.
http://www.proko.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/edge-sharp-firm-soft-lost.jpg
I hope this helped. Study well!

Do u guys mostly draw from reference or do u think of the drawing in your head and just draw it?
>>
>>3052702
Sometimes neither to be honest, I just start drawing and let the flow of my hand+the back of my mind do the work. However, that's just because I'm lazy, when I use references my drawings improve greatly, so definitely use them when possible/necessary. I think there might've been a time where I imagined the drawing in my head, but now I almost never do that, the drawing process is different for everyone though. I'm a 'let's trust my muscle memory and visual library to shit out drawings until I need to look something up on google images and study it' kind of guy.

I want to like the empty open background but it just doesn't quite do it for me. I dunno. I thought maybe I could split the difference by having the wider frame but also keep it condensed with some trees and stuff coming in from the sides.

Ye or Ne?
>>
>>3052949
For some reason, the foreground trees feel like they're skewing the size of everything. Now the town feels small and that's just a regular sized ram. I hope you find a solution, though, because this piece looks amazing already (especially those clouds and that brick work).

Do you ever post your collective WIPs together anywhere?

Rather than drawing each individual hair first lay in the values, then approach the general shape of the curls, and lastly draw the texture. You sort of skipped the first two steps here

Adding onto what the other anon said about the composition lacking,
just convert your image to a greyscale thumbnail.
You'll notice how despite the detail the naga has, they're barely distinguishable from their surroundings.
You need to make their form clearer and read better.
Meanwhile, the value scheme has our eyes focused on the bright castle in the background that looks like shit (right now).
Made a lazy edit to show how you might reorder the values, balance out the composition a little.

You need to vary your values. Right now there's too much dark with smatterings of mid-tone that don't give any indication of form. And the highlights also don't help distinguish a 3d shape.

Look at it from the thumbnail and if you took away spidey's white eyes, would you be able to tell what you're looking at?

I understand now why people photobash. This is an agonizingly slow process.
>>
>>3053774

I don't know why I like this so much. The thumbnail looks really nice. I love how minimalistic and graphical it is. Just a little puff of clouds on the BG with a black land mass. If you could just do the execution part better I'd love it as a full sized image too (instead of just the thumbnail).
>>
>>3054015

Thumbnail looks like one of those ZBrush displacement city things you see around. Nice values. Are you using the photobashed parts with different blending modes or are you just trying to slap them in with their original colors etc? having the right blending modes and shit really helps. Also knowing the keyboard shortcuts for stuff like Hue/Saturation (ctrl+u), Curves (ctrl+M) and actions for stuff like Match Colour (Image/adjustments/Match Color) and fucking around with the Blend If- options in your layer styles thingy. You'll get quicker in time but It's a dangerous trap when you start relying on it too much...
>>
>>3049493
Nice rendering but the tip of the nose looks overtly flat, a highlight would help clear this up, as the highlights on fhe forehead and lack of highlight on the nose confuses a viewer
>>
>>3054024
I'm not photobashing. I'm rendering this all by hand. I'm just saying I get why people would want to photobash because doing this by hand is a pain in the ass.
>>
>>3054029

Aww fuck I'm sorry! My bad. I'm drunk and I read "I don't understand why people photobash. This is hard etc." I was also going to say that it doesn't look photobashed (which it's obviously not). I shouldn't talk to people at 5 in the morning...

the eyebrows are pleasingly soft, but unfortunately has weird alignment due to brow bone issues.

it looks like you're aware of that issue in your other piece of the red head but you need to clean your seam lines (underneath her eyebrow). the red head has one brow higher than the other.
>>
>>3051851
good layout, its pretty clear what you're trying to achieve. i'm incredibly underwhelmed by the lack of texture in the outer rocks. keep up with the details and your piece will be much more interesting. elongate the shadow of the figure to emphasise the extreme sunlight in your environment.

thanks, I did it today and it's probably my favorite drawing yet. I think this one will stay as it is, but I'd like to understand what you mean about the execution. Are you referring to the texture of the graphite looking like crap or the actual drawing as in values and construction?

Values and construction mostly. I'm not great at graphite stuff but I bet there are better ways of indicating stuff like clouds, forest and water. Aye! I like it too. Just wrote graphite landscape or some shit on Google. It's not bad to copy people some times.

>>3054047

Your values are kind of nice but the whole image is too wide. I'm sorry but you'd really have to start from scratch if you wanted to get this done properly.

You need to trust your eyes more. You tried to paint the eye in the shadow even though we can't really see it because of how dark the area is. If you can't see it the viewer shouldn't see it either. Don't be afraid to leave stuff ambiguous if that's how it looks in real life.

I know it's fucking unfair but I warped your image around for a couple of minutes in Photoshop so you'd see some of your mistakes better. Didn't want to take it further because I know you can do it yourself... Hope it helps mang.

Continuing with my little study regime. Value study of some body builder dude. I used some gradient maps for the colors again so I won't call it a color study. It is kind of cheap to use all this digital trickery but since I am going for a career in digital art I think it's okay to do it since I'm going to be using the same technique in my professional art anyway... No color picking or other fuckery though. Just drawing/painting by eye. Please tell me what I should try to improve on. My current idea for a study regime is:

- 1 week studies
- 1 week doing 1 personal piece (from imagination) a day
- 1 week huge 70+h based on studies and practice

So a 3 week cycle for a while till I get some proper work...

I'm at the study part now. I hope I git good some time...

Regarding values, focus on edges and plane shifts. Looks like you can 'see' value relationships but things are looking a bit too soft. You're right to focus on values first but don't ignore color completely until you feel you are 'ready.'

Well anyways. I don't think it's a great idea to start so vaguely even on portraits. It's a good idea to go from dark to light but you might want to have a darker dark background to start building up from. You also want to have a stronger silhouette for the character right from the start. I don't really know what you're going for there but I did a 20min. version of how I'd start building the image. Hope this helps...

Yep, some limited values study.

>try to focus on using hard 100% brushes for most of the time

Yeah, when studying I use hard round 100 with textures off just to not add anything too cool so mistakes are more obvious. Edges are really mix of theory and practice -know where plane ends/transitions and what it actually looks like in ref- so lots of theory and lots of grinding for that vis library. The choice on which is really creative licence.

Def learn the tools but I think it sticks better learning it with just the brush first.

Mainly for the colors I use Winston and Newton markers, I have a box with 12 colors. I also have another box of markers that are cool/warm grays, these I use to add tones.

I also use color pencils, for example the yellow marker does not really work well with the toned paper, so I use a yellow pencil. Sometimes I hatch using a colored Fineliner, gives a pretty nice effect.

This is gonna be epic! Are you the person who did the lady wizard thing with the blue dragon?

I think this might be more aesthetic if you'd just "blur" the guy on the foreground with loser strokes instead of a blur filter. I can see you have the skills to do that... Can't say much else except looks! Tell us when you get to work with Blizzard.

I like your artwork, man. I think it has pottential. There are a few points I would like to lead you onto.

First one. Instead of being too elaborate on pointing out anatomical mistakes I will just say that neck you've painted is way too exaggerated and trapezoid muscle can't connect this way. Also ears and lips might be just slightly too big.

Second. You should mind aerial perspective in your painting because it will make your forms more distinct and expressive. As an example of that your nose should've been painted more detailed and and have more tone contrast - that would make it pop out and give sense of dimension to the rest of the face. And likewise, ears should be made a little more blurry than the rest of facial features.

Lastly I will comment on two things.I like the color of this background, but you should also try to avoid making it a flat color by adding more variety to it, keeping in mind that they must look pleasing. Also, by adding complimenting colors near the face you will make it more expressive as well.

And try to finish the neck and rest of the shoulders next time you work, don't just leave it like that.

I hope this has been at least a little bit helpful to you. Could you tell me how long you have been painting for and what or from whom you are studying? Best wishes to you and I hope for your future success

i got a long neck, big lips, and big ears. some people just ugly.

but i tried aerial perspective by way of impasto, and now that i think of it i can probably blur the edges of the ears, but what do you think of this so far?

I made a mistake with the background unfortunately... I got the color that it should be correct, but I should've done a darker underpainting and then that color on top of it. I can still do that, I just need to wait for it to dry.

The likeness, colors and values are pretty good. I hope you're not color picking. I prefer the first version with the more muted/realistic lighting.

Unfortunately your brush choices kind of ruin it for me. I think you have two choices here:

1. If you want it to look good without going into fine detail use a hard brush. Airbrushed stuff just doesn't look nice.

2. If you want to airbrush your stuff you can do it IF you have the patience to go in after and render all the pores and fine details and shit. You'll get a photorealistic finish. Some people like it. Some don't...

Hope this helped...

>>
>>3059540

Will do. I'm gonna be a lazy asshole and just use the horse you posted as reference. It's fucking perfect. Just change the colors and shit. I'm going to keep the image a little bit wider/higher to have a little bit of space where the eye can rest but something in between will probably work.

I was thinking I might want to change Link's shield into a bow so he's just fired an arrow. I'll have the first Hinox spazzing out from getting shot in the eye with some blood gushing out.

Thanks for the crit, boss.

This is a really cool idea!

My thoughts are kinda opposite to >>3059540 in terms of cropping. I say expand the cave a little bit, and make the lighting a little more dramatic. Tilting the entire canvas can help add a bit more sense of action and anticipation, like the Hinoxes are about to roll over onto Link. I think the clouds can be reworked to give a better sense of vastness to the sky, to better help contrast the claustrophobic cave in the foreground.

Agreed that the horse needs to be doing something other than just stand there though.
>>
>>3059572
>>3059560
Also - if you're going to use that horse for reference, have it face to the right, and have its head turned towards the Hinoxes.
>>
>>3059572

Damn! I think I like your crit even better. Probably gonna go with this. My initial idea for the cave had to do with adding claustrofobia so I'll keep that and widen the shit a little. I was playing around with the idea of a tilted camera but dropped it. I'll bring it back though.

For lighting I was thinking that the sun's gonna be behind a hill to our right (outside the image) the light hits Link and the head/shoulder area of the horse and just the very top areas of the Hinoxes. Hinoxae? I don't know. Obviously we'll have a blue fill light coming from the top because you know... There's a sky.

Thanks a million!
>>
>>3059581
>>3059572

Good Idea. It'll make a nice S-curve type of thing. Might do that. Not sure thought. Will have to adjust the pose a little more. I did a 2min. test using both crits.

I'll work on the clouds last . Going to use them like "arrows" pointing to our main area of action...

Thanks again.

It's kind of hard to get a proper read on the composition when you don't have any value structure yet. Anatomy on the characters looks nice and it's good that you're drawing through all the 3d shapes.

I'd give you the same critique I got on my Zelda piece. Crop it down to the essentials.

Really heavily constructed, though the construction's still wobbly in places. It just comes off as rigid, but if you were trying to demonstrate lots of perspective then you're getting there.
As fanart it's extremely poor; you maintained none of the art direction from the original, down to the aspect ratio.

>As fanart it's extremely poor; you maintained none of the art direction from the original, down to the aspect ratio
I don't know what it's supposed to be fan art of, but this is a really dumb thing to say. Fan art is at its most interesting when done in an artists own unique style. To suggest that you need to maintain some of the art direction (especially something as inane as the aspect ratio) is just stupid.

Yeah its pretty (super) heavily constructed. During which I drafted out most things pretty rigidly, but I went over most of the lines freehand on a new layer afterward creating the wobbly effect. You're right that I wanted to demonstrate a lot of perspective, in order to cram in lots of things from the show. My question is, is too much construction/rigidity inherently a bad thing? Or just something that is unsuccessful in this piece.

>is too much construction/rigidity inherently a bad thing?
Construction shows a limited understanding of what you're drawing, because you have to apply both physical and figurative rules to the subject instead of letting your brain do the work for you.
If you don't fully understand what you're drawing, then how are you going to draw it fluidly?
Then again, if you don't understand what you're drawing, how will you draw it at all - just look at Haruko's arms; you didn't construct them, and the lengths are fucked.
You just need to do more studies to internalize the information, instead of relying on lines on the page to do it for you.
>>
>>3059750

The shitty fatter brush you used ruins the whole thing. You can clearly see the repeated textures of the brush and it looks very lazy.
