You know that hands have wrists right? In that position you should've made the wrists pop out and curved the top hand inwards towards her chest and away from the viewer to follow the curve of the arm.

Pictures where someone is looking straight at you and everything is almost perfectly symmetrical tend to always feel dead. Have her turn her head slightly, or shoulder. Work on trying to make your drawings have more expressive body language.

Okay, if you have some purpose for it then it's fine. One other minor complaint is that the text is slightly hard to read, even on a big high res monitor. If you could find a way to make your handwriting slightly bigger or improve the scanner I'd love reading more of this. I'd recommend getting a flatbed scanner, they're pretty much the best when it comes to taking pictures of this kind of thing.

the writing is just for my own reference right now, since I write the exact dialogue as I draft. the plan is to remove it and insert type
I found a scanner online with everything I need and it's coming eventually. The plan is to scan each panel before and after I attack it with watercolors, correct the colored version to have good saturation and white balance, then take the ink only version, increase the saturation so it's true black and put it on top, though I might not have to if the auto exposure on the scanner works well

I have a lot of background in traditional illustration, but as far as manga, hellsing, soul eater, and itou junji, with the latter being my favorite. I'm torn between the freedom of a more simple style like soul eater, hirano-san's eccentric empasis on clothes which I also tend to do, and the mastery of itou's work. I can't justify putting too much more effort into it since it's a current webcomic though, at least until I get faster

Kienan Lafferty. He makes a pretty cartoony comic called Emma but he actually can also draw realistic concept art at a professional level. He works with Riot Games and has worked on games such as League of Legends so he knows what he is doing. So, I bought a graphic tablet (NEW 1060 PLUS) but I'll admit it I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed since this is all new to me, I've never drawn anything digital before, I was strictly drawing traditional before. I downloaded a bunch of programs to see whether everything was working as intended or not. I think I'll try to get good with Clip Studio Paint I think as I read good things about it.

Anyway, does anyone have any tips or advice? Like some sort of course, stuff I could read or whatever I could follow to reach a point where I more or less know what I'm doing? I don't mean drawing-wise but more like tool-wise. I'd just really like some tips, guidelines and advice if possible. Thanks.
>>
>>3049892
I'd recommend using a stabilizer if you're having trouble getting the same lines.
Some people say it's a crutch, but they're pretty fucking stupid. It's a tool like anything digital. It doesn't teach you to draw poor lines, and it doesn't inhibit your skill on paper either. All it does is make the lines a little easier to draw since tablet are so oversensitive.
>>
>>3049971
It won't help you that much tough. If you were doing shit lines before you'll still go shit lines with it. Stablizer removes the imperfections of lines you can get, kinda like 3D rendered lines., it lacks life.
>>
>>3050025
If the art is good I doubt you're going to notice if they use stabilizers or not.
>>
>>3050030
Nah, you still will, it's noticeable. Can still work but I definitely wouldn't advise to use it, I just find imperfect lines way more interesting to look at.

How do you do those volume implying lines like on the Demon King's abs? The sort of airbrushed look but still very controlled?

Also, I like the designs but I only really have two critiques. The fat general's stomach feels more like a pregnant woman's stomach with how taut it is, versus a real fat man with a similar build. Also, the hero's nips being visible is distracting to the point this looks more like a hentai doujin series. But that's definitely subjective.

Yeah, it's supposed to be very exaggerated, not like It comes from nowhere, was kinda inspired by Wyzen from Asura's Wrath and Smough from Dark Souls
>>

Oh, thanks! I overthought it and assumed you were using lasso tools and airbrushes and everything. And at a second glance, his design does look intentional enough in that intimidating guy with a grotesquely big beer belly look.
>>

> assumed you were using lasso tools and airbrushes and everything.
Nah, it's pretty straightforward, I overall always use those two tools do draw everything actually. Though a bit less of smudge since those are sketches.

And yeah, there were already lots of well shaped muscular guys so differentiating him with an exaggerated beer belly works well I think, since he's also the older one of the bunch.

He or you can draw quite well although his colors really suck sometimes, they are so hard on the eye from time to time.
But his habit is just what it is, a bad habit, and it doesnt add anything, might as well make them naked, if you really want to emphasize it in that way.

damn, you having a bad day anon? Or do you always act like a condescending little bitch?
You have every right to dislike the style, but YOU certainly didn't give a 'critique', and it obvious.
Now let me show you how a condescending asshole gives a critique.

>were the plucked eyelashes and shaved eyebrows intentional or just an oversight?

Have you taken note of this artists overall style? If so, you can come to the conclusion that they more than likely intentionally simplified these features and spent no more than a couple hours on this piece. It's not even a finished piece so why would assume this anime-esque art would have included eyelashes and more realistic eyebrows? Surely you noticed the lining around the eyebrow as well(Indicating it was INTENTIONALLY made to be thin)

>learn to draw faces, necks, chests, arms, elbows, hips and legs (basically, anatomy) before colouring them

So here it looks like you tried to point out the anatomy mistakes, but really all you did was list off body parts. I believe you worded this sentence specifically to try and prolong what you actually were saying, which was "Learn anatomy before coloring"
It's already a given that this artist is working on their anatomy since the first fucking sentence in this thread is "This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies"
But you're not the type to read or analyze much, are ya?

>major props for drawing hands despite the style though

I'm guessing you tried to end your 'critique' with an ass-backwards compliment, so good for you! At least you tried!

Asshole like you only destroy an artist's drive to continue improving, even if you're just here to waste time and bait people.
So work within your means and fuck off.

I find it pretty fucking hilarious on hindsight, until this week he was always the "4th random general to fill in" in my mind, but now that I redesigned him properly I feel like I almost made him too impressive looking.

> this looks/sounds less retarded instead of calling them all General

Well, they does are supposed to be of the same rank. I initially wanted to call them the "four heavenly kings" like how the 4 bosses under the demon king tends to be called, but I find that title more impressive than the demon king one so I didn't keep it and began using military ranks instead.
As I mentioned before, belly red, blue, grey and another one are of the same rank (highest one under the demon king), though grey also leads the whole army and is as such a bit more important, while the 4th one is considered the demon king's right hand but doesn't do much leading wise.

Perspective on this is really weird, the legs taper really fast and to a really exaggerated degree which makes me think you tried to make a dynamic overhead foreshortening shot but then fucked it up.Also, the foreshortening on the left arm doing the middle finger does not read as foreshortening and instead looks like she has a really short upper arm and a monstrously long forearm. The creature on the right has terrible hands and the right shoulder seems to have been completely forgotten about. Speaking of torsos, the other girl's shirt doesn't behave how cloth would and is way too stiff and her trapezius muscles are connecting to the shoulder in a weird way, probably a perspective issue.

Big belly on men isn't like that. It's too saggy and more akin to a pregnant woman. Seriously, if you raise it up and don't have it cut off underneath his chest it would look far more masculine.

It's barely noticable, but the amount of ribcage on the right side? That little bit? Just get rid of it and replace it with round stomach. Raise the belly button a little and you're good to go

Even if you wanna make him strongfat it won't matter much. If he's got saggy tits then that's fine but pecs won't push down a beer belly. They just kind of... Exist on top of one another?

Fat and muscle aren't intertwined, they're their own layers. So even though fat might spill around fat, the muscle underneath won't be too altered. That's why a big belly will make the tits spread, but not pecs.

This guy's probably not as fat as you want, but it's a good example of what happens. Sorry for the dick but you get the idea.

Couple things.

If you want to go for the hair over the eye look, make sure the hair covers the entire eye. Don't do the DeviantART hair-flip where it looks like she just has skin. Either draw the other eye or have the curls cascade down her entire cheek with no "negative" space.

As far as that hand, I have problems with hands, too. Longer fingers and nails will make it look far more elegant, and don't feel like you have to show the entirety of each finger. Have some cut off from perspective is perfectly acceptable.

If you want to keep the colors of the dress and shoes, I suggest you darken the hair. It's too intense to look good and the whole thing looks sloppy. But if you want to keep that hair color, making the dress white with gold trim would help that color scheme out IMMENSELY. And gold wristclasps might not be a bad idea, either, especially if you want long, lanky arms.

Speaking of accessories, you've got a steel/iron/silver moon going on... And a gold pendant. It's usually not a good idea to mix different color metals together unless they're touching (like different bangles). Choose one metal and stick with it. If you have an incredibly complicated costume idea (which I didn't get from this but whatever) then use both of those metals in other places of your character's costume. It looks awkward otherwise.

I like the way you feet. There's some calf issues going on on the left (our side) but the feet look proportionate and well-placed. Glad you didn't cop out on them like a lot of people do.

Thanks for actually giving me a useful critique. I tried to change the torso to something more dynamic but ending up keeping it as it would probably not be worth the time. I noticed I naturally tilted her shoulders which added a little interest to the piece but I wasn't sure why it wasn't working correctly but once I just adjusted the lengths to match the blue line tilt it seemed to work. I've pretty much moved on from this throwaway piece but if you have some more advice I'd love it man

>>

Yeah, i did it based on a reference, i admit it was really lazy hiding them like that, i will keep practicing the fundies like everyone else here
>The ears are way too small
I cann't even argue this because there is nothing to say, they are WAY too small
>>
>>3053915
Well the eyes aren't matching the left is fine while the right is janked, but that's an easy fix desu

You've got the right idea with the breasts but the shirt is over-exaggerated so widen the lining of the shirt that out lines them

your neck is just a tree body, and thats fine in situations where that general area isn't emphasized make it look more natural by widening the bottom part and make it look more connected to the body

honestly these are all things you can learn easily through learning muscle anatomy

Remember, the best anime-style artists still had to learn the human body and proportions before they were able to exaggerate them, which is why are able to do it more consistently and with quality results

TL;DR Fundamentals first, style second but keep in mind what you want you style to be for when you get it right
>>
>>3053937
Holy shit, god bless you anon, i will literally keep this info on a notepad, how should i proceed about practicing muscle anatomy, Loomis or just google it?

it's what 4chan calls the "big sticky' it'll show you the basics of a lot of useful art concepts
I'd advise that you take a look even if you aren't looking to do any of the fancy-schmancy stuff, you'll be surprised as to what can still be applied to stylized art. i'll come back if i find anything
>>
>>3053946
I have been going with Loomis and reference sheets i have found in multiple sites, obviously i am still shit at it but if i find something better i will post it in /beg/ since this thread isn't really dedicated to anatomy practices
>>
>>3053953
I appreciate it my good man, and just like with anything in life getting better requires long hard work and dedication. so keep an open mind and a steady hand

how do you work when you just want to doodle shit, anon? Thick brushes? Thin brushes? High stabilizer? No stabilizer? I can never decide what works
>>
>>3054391
My usual setup, being a normal pencil/pen brush and no stabilizer.
>>
>>3054391
>I can never decide what works

It's not like there is one best solution. All of those can work.
>>
>>3054394
There's no universal best solution of course, but at the very least there's probably a personal best solution. Replacing things that 'can work' with things that DO work is what improvement is all about, I'm just wondering if anyone has tried things yet that I haven't so I can learn from them

Though I guess it's less of a matter of what you use, than how you use it. Too bad I can't decide on that either

Intentionally obscuring the image to make it look better is cheating, just like hiding the hands because you are bad at them, just at a more fundamental level.
>>
>>3055006
It doesn't make the image look better though, I literally just admitted that it looks kinda ugly. But using a wide, soft brush makes it difficult to work cleanly and intricately so that I don't waste time stressing out over making everything perfect.

Perfectionism during the sketch phase is one of my biggest issues, Im really just here looking for ideas on how to fix it
>>
>>3054493
>>3055000
When trying to draw a line, it helps to throw down a few until you find which one looks right. This is the same priniciple.
A thick line is just a bunch of lines together. Your brain will interpret the "correct" line from those lines.
The thicker the line, the more chances you have at drawing the "correct" line in it. Blurring is just another way of doing thicker lines, and leaving more up to the brain's ability to idealize what it sees.

The pose feels stiff more than anything else. Based on how well you've already defined the gear on her left arm, I'd imagine you want to make that a focal point right? In which case you might wanna have her right hand interacting with that instead of fiddling with her robe.

In general, I think one aspect of sketching you might want to work on is where you place your focus. You went and made a super detailed armor piece while 70% of the piece is still in a sketched state, like you're still not quite sure where you want to take the piece. To save a lot of headaches in the future, it's probably way easier to denote complicated objects using simple shapes, and to define it much later in the process. This way, you can make some pretty major changes without feeling like you've just deleted a lot of work.

For instance, my previous suggestion of having her right hand interacting with her left armor piece, you'd have to change the position of her left arm as well, and probably the shoulders and even the back as well. It's a lot easier (mentally, anyways) to do major changes like that if you haven't locked yourself into something by drawing a lot of details early on.

No, but big yes to everything else. You have a really clean approach to shapes and lines. Do you do an undersketch, or can you visualize the forms as you go along enough to go straight to the line art?
