Most tutorials seem to cover extra like edges and all that crap. I'm looking for a tutorial that covers the simple lightning that mangas use without delving into rendering.

Just imagine the drawing as a 3D object and decide where to put your light source.
Lines that are gradually getting far from each other = light fading (like the gradient tool)

Almost any artist can create passable simple lighting, but to make really good looking simple lighting you need to understand complex lighting mechanics.
This applies to most things: if you want to draw a simple version of something, you're better off understanding all its complexities first.

What you're seeing in that image is mostly a stylistic choice. The concept of lighting is the same as anywhere else, he is just choosing where to shade.
