How do you get popular on these social media?

How do you get followers on sites like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr? do you use tags? do you tag fanart?? what then? How are YOU popular on these sites?

I have a deviantart account with 1,200 watchers and get an ok flow of comments and commissions. But I know the reason for it is because of dA's groups that allows me to reach thousands of people's inboxes, otherwise I have no idea how anyone would have found me. On the other sites mentioned I have between 14-200 followers, and it's just dead. Every time I post something on tumblr where I have about 200 followers, I get about 11 likes. I post the same things, and try to put as many relevant tags, including shit like #artistsoninstagram, but tags alone obviously doesn't do much because it soon gets buried by new people.

pic kinda related, Ilya just got 1 million followers on instagram.
>>
Fanart mostly. Ilya posts original work, but note how popular his fanart gets. Then people see his other original art and follow him regardless. Especially fanart of recent works, this will get you the most traffic. Many popular Twitter or Tumblr artists have risen to fame through art from some game, show, etc.
Keep in mind, tagging on Tumblr is limited to the first 5 tags. Anything after this won't show up in search.
As for gaining followers on Twitter, it's tough because hashtags will take up a lot of character space. Just promote your Twitter on whatever other accounts you have I guess.
Obviously won't hurt if you have an appealing or nice artstyle. It takes time to get popularity. I think it's easier on Deviantart compared to the other sites you listed. As for Instagram, I have no idea since I don't use it.
>>
>>3043813
Do you have a target audience?
Followers/watchers what to see more of the things they followed you for.

Look at vetyr for example. Most of the work she does is very similar to each other in subject matter (colorful portraits of pretty girls). It also helps that she's good at it. The works which deviate from this theme get much less attention.

It's the same with ilya
>>
Bump.
Kinda curious how to get popular on Instagram.

You need to become an even bigger attention whore to gain more attention. I have no idea how.

Ilya makes $12,000 a month on patreon and everyone here will still be drawing loomis heads 5 years from now.

you didn't understand what he meant. To a certain degree likes and followers don't matter
Compare James Jean to someone like Kushinov. Kushinov is a basement dweller weeb shit who makes a small portion of what James does.

This. The dude JUMPS on trends as quickly as possible whether or not he takes interest in them. He once drew A2 and called her 2B from Nier Automata.
>>

It's not that he uses reference, it's that he basically copied straight from official artwork or screenshots, never credited them as studies, and even sold them as prints.

The point he is trying to bring forth is that Kron plagiarizes the works from others and uses their content so he could piggy back ride the popularity by bastardizing whatever he is giving a "tribute" to with his version of lensflare.

I don't know what is more pathetic, Kron plagiarizing something and calling it his own or a discount version of kron copying what kron is copying leaving someone else to believe it is original content and ends up wanting to copy the copy of kron's copied work.
>>
>>3045644
I think you are really overestimating the amount of money a top tier illustrator makes if you think someone making 12,000 $ a month makes a "small portion" of that.

"if you want to make money you are in the wrong business"

drawing fanart but also having a recognizable art style and always drawing the same subject (like girls) really helps
>>
>>3043813
Like other's have said, fan art is a big follower boost. Latch on to something popular you like and make fan art. I've also seen people do fan art for youtubers and twitch streamers. This has allowed them to not only interact with these people and gain connections, but once they're in, they start to share communities and friends with these people.
And remember that social media is a social place too. So remember to retweet/reblog people (if you want, depends on the purpose of your social media), respond to posts by other people, and every now and then make a text post. There are people who follow artists for their personalities too, not just for their art.

And also, like another anon mentioned, having more followers does not equal making more money if that is your goal. If you want to make money, you need to think like a business person. Popularity is always awesome, but it's nothing if you make nothing of it.
>>
Just copy kronprinz's style and do fanart of popular series. Both guweiz and koyorin did that and they now have tons of followers.
>>
>>3045755
>And also, like another anon mentioned, having more followers does not equal making more money if that is your goal. If you want to make money, you need to think like a business person. Popularity is always awesome, but it's nothing if you make nothing of it.

>most popular artist on DA also earns the most money on patreon
gee I wonder why retard
>>
>>3045760
Are you talking about Sakimichan? She isn't just earning so much money because she's popular on DeviantArt. She's earning so much money because her turn around time is insanely fast, despite being fast she produces high quality work, and she knows exactly what her demographic wants.

Most popular people can monetize their popularity, but I I've seen a lot of people that do not take advantage of their popularity and just leave money on the floor.

I can attest that James Jean probably makes a shitload more than Kushinov. I know a client of his that got a simple commission from him along with one of his paintings. The total was over $100k. He's obviously making way more money than fan art-drawing weebs if he is able to afford a customized home in Santa Monica (pic related) even after his ex-wife nearly left him broke years back.

>>
>>3043813

Aside from being at the very least a decent artist, you just gotta play the game and be active in social media. Check which of your works are popular and keep doing that, comment the hell out of other people, like/favorite/upvote/whatever system the media has of other peoples post and artworks, join groups and conversations. Link all of your social medias to one another and also having some charisma helps which either you have it or you don't.
>>
>>3048578
>comment the hell out of other people, like/favorite/upvote/whatever
This is bad advice. It's annoying/desperate as fucking hell and easily noticeable when someone is doing it just for attention. Good artists, even people like Ilya never had to do.
>>
>>3046611
>>3045644

Try looking for 'fan tumblrs' for comics / tv shows / games / etc. A lot of those blogs already have thousands of followers and will re blog your stuff if it's related to them and you ask to be be featured / posted
>>
>>3043813
Draw fanart + anime = tons of followers
>>
>>3049120
the question was how to get noticed on specific websites. just drawing anime fanart isn't going to let people know you exist there
>>
>>3049120
Let me break it down for you guys.
>draw anime fanart: 10-50 followers
>draw nsfw anime fanart: 150-200 followers
>draw tumblr shit: 200 followers
>draw /d/ tier anime fanart: 300 followers
>draw furry shit: 400 followers

>have a female sounding username+avatar: 1000 followers

>be a cishet white dude from the US: 5 followers
>be a tans woman: 2000 followers
>be a trans PoC: 5000 followers and published by Marvel

Just gotta know who visits those sites lads
>>
>>3043832
>tagging on Tumblr is limited to the first 5 tags. Anything after this won't show up in search.
that was fixed ages ago.
you're dumb still using tumblr for art, most artists fled the scene after tweens took over the site to be annoying and embarrassing. move to ig.
>>
>>3048759
He IS objectively a better artist than Sakimichan and Ilya in every way. Just look at the Fables covers he's done for starters. The dude is a versatile illustrator and doesn't rely on the same pandering fan art bullshit like those two do. Money isn't always indicative of skill but there's this huge misconception that Sakimi's and Ilya's levels are what people should be shooting for because of Patreon bux when they're just bandwagoning fanartists who draw the same fucking shit. James Jean is one of the few artists who deservedly gets what he earns from his skill and originality.

he doesn't seem like a hack, he definitely knows how to draw and his line quality is above average. He just seems to be milking the same cow until it dies without trying anything new.
>>
>>3050870
thats quite literally the definition of a hack genius

a person, as an artist or writer, who exploits, for money, his or her creative ability or training in the production of dull, unimaginative, and trite work; one who produces banal and mediocre work in the hope of gaining commercial success in the arts
>>
>>3049221
>blaming everything but being a shitty artist on your unpopularity

>>
>>3050393
there are still thousands of people that use tumblr, can't hurt to post there, just stay away from SJW's
>>
>>3048598
how do you know? he probably had to do the same at the very start
I know an ig artist that faved/followed/commented the shit out of everyone until they hit 1k followers, after that the ball just kept rolling and they're now at 80k without having to do this shit anymore
>>
For tumblr it's important you either draw at least something that has tags people actually follow (fanart basically) or make friends with other artists to get those initial reblogs. If stuff starts circulating you're pretty set, I haven't posted anything in the last two months but still got cca 200 followers in that time.
But other than that I've noticed people love to follow and engage with people who post consistently in a style that's unique to them, so don't just do what everybody else is.
>>
>>3043813
be female....thats about it
>>
>>3050898
Staff has no taste. I saw great posts with self-put 'artists on tumblr' tags never got featured or labeled officially, while some abstract or 'brave' shit gets on the radar constantly. Literally just become trans and they'll be eating your shit and asking for more.
>>
>>3050905
Why are you blaming something so rare as a staff feature on your failure? I have never shown my face or stated anything about me and I got pretty popular in a pretty short time just by drawing stuff I like and making a few cool art friends.
Get off your lazy excuse seeking ass and post some content others want to and can see.
>>
>>3050898

another good tip is NEVER posting passive aggressive shit like
>waaah reblog instead of like, likes kill artists
>why does my original art never get notes but any shitty fanart does
it kills notes like nothing else, I've seen an artist go from 100-2000 notes per pic to under 50 because they guilt tripped everybody until they didn't dare interact with anything they posted anymore
>>
>>3050908
see
> If stuff starts circulating you're pretty set

I'm not blaming staff. I just making a point that pleasing them is pointless and people should remove them from the list of asses to kiss.
>>
>>3050918
I said stuff, not staff, I've never seen or tried to have staff promote anything, by circulating I mean the reblog chain stretches for months.
>>
>>3050919
shit I'm illiterate astigmatic dumb cunt. Sorry anon, point taken.
>>
>>3050886
Being a good artist doesn't guarantee you success. There are loads of them who don't have a quarter of the followers the bottom tier I listed have.
>>
>>3050968
can't imagine how you can have just 5 or even just 500 followers if you drew anime fanart and didn't fucking suck my dude
>>
How the hell do you gain instagram followers? I've been posting for half a year and my images still cap at 30 likes.
>>
>>3050973
Networking, liking other people's stuff etc
>>
>>3050988
>liking other people's stuff
again, this is a desperate strategy and won't get you thousands or even hundreds unless you spend all day on it. Ilya hasn't liked or commented anything for about 4 years.
>>
>>3050968
>Being a good artist doesn't guarantee you success.

>>

I'm literally in that bracket. Got 250+ followers and as of my recent additions, one that was fanart of some cartoon character got ~50 notes in a day while anything after that that was a bit obscure got like 10. It's not just about fan art either, it's how "fotm" they are, as in really recent, relevant or something you'd see posted on /co/ it seems.

I don't see anything wrong with this at all, these are MEANT to look like the ref. A lot of people do these kinds of "screencap redraws" and other shit of popular shows and comics.
