Alright /ic/ check in thread.
How old are you, how long have you been drawing for, what age did you start and what's your art like currently?

>How old are you, how long have you been drawing for, what age did you start and what's your art like currently?

Soon to be 40. I have been drawing since a kid but not that much, I sometimes spent years without drawing, even as a kid. I've recently decided to start learning how to actually draw instead of having a mid-life crisis (come to think of it... maybe it's a soft kind of mid-life crisis). My art is terrible - not surprising considering my lack of efforts over the last decades, but I'm not into excuses and it's my damn fault anyway. I see 18-something year old on /ic/ who're far above me but it's more challenging than depressing.

I guess that I'm going to either become a living proof that there's no such thing as 'too late' or one additional proof - out of many - that there's.

>Probably wanted to start something serious around 19? So I would say that, even though things kind of collapsed on me because reasons listed above, that's when things clicked.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I don't really consider myself an artist or an animator, rather I have average abilities in drawing and animating and I use them as tools to do what I'm actually good at: Storytelling. I am here to improve, though, because I just want to get better.

I've been doing quick exercises (along with other more detailed work) of 50 (wire) frames a day, just trying new things, finding out what works and what doesn't work. Trying perspective tricks. All that stuff. This is the first one I did. I think I only had 48 frames in this one, though, because I deleted some unnecessary slides.

I have no idea how to practice, I have no idea where my weak areas are, I have no idea how to make formal practice sessions with clear exercises that help me achieve my goal.

The majority of the time I post my stuff, the comments focus on my linework. When I ask around other places, they say that the linework will passively improve as I draw more, but it's practically the only thing I hear about when I post here. It's discouraging as fuck because I also don't think the linework is that bad, and it has improved since I first got started.

I'm gonna stick with it and post less, because I'm noticing a cycle when I psych myself up. I dunno. I'm hoping to follow more figure and gesture drawing exercises on a timed basis, but I'd love any tips on how I can improve.

Me too anon. Me too.
It's how I've ended up with depression. I've got so much pressure on myself to pull a portfolio together and make it into an art school when I graduate that I hate everything I draw, because when I compare it to everyone else my age I'm terrible. I don't really think I've improved since I started and it's making me want to shoot myself.

I'm putting pressure on myself because I feel that when I do put out work, it's work I want to continue doing. I'm friends with a few artists who are p good too, and they're like, just consistently putting stuff out and talk to me like I'm an equal and it's like christ why are they even talking to me.

A lot of it's mental but I don't know where to go. Anyway, cheers for the thread, it was nice to vent for a bit. I hope we both find a way to structure the things we want to improve. I'll share how things go once I figure things out more.

When i was like 8 years old, i used to draw some nice spoder man, be the kid with more drawings skill with no reason, be better than my counsin at it with no reason too, and better than almost everyone with no fucking reason. 21 years old, a neet, dropped out the best college of computer science in my country, because im retard, remenbered that i was good at drawing at 8 and maybe i would enjoy it now. Remenbered that i always wanted created at least one thing amanzing to people, that i always ve been a creative guy even not drawing, saw some random earning money by drawing, get know about all the industry, all the stuff. Bought a wacoom, start drawing, drawing like a shit 8 years kid. starting to studying, 1 year pass, and yeah, that is me, a neet, lazy as fuck, trying study to one day maybe produce something good to people and to me, and earn money with that in the same time. Not really to be quite honest. I've just painted and drawn whatever I've wanted since day one.
Only routine I've had is to draw every day and at some point I started doing daily studies of whatever I felt like that day.
Don't want to plug my shit but if you want to know exactly what I've been doing I've uploaded every single drawing and painting I've done since I started liking art on gumroad for free. So if you're interested https://gum.co/nCTkO

I've been drawing my whole life, but got more serious at around 18, onward it was a downward spiral into my vices. I've been bobbing my head in and out of communities posting here and there, but I eventually went on a complete hiatus.

It is only in past 3 months that I have picked it up again and I have to say that my art has almost passively improved, what's more I am making more headway than I ever had before. I would say that I am intermediate, but there are others who (unrightfully) hold me to a high esteem.

Everyone gets an A type of deal. Thought I was good, unknowingly didn't know a single thing. Had no proper instruction so I didn't know what I was doing wrong.
>22, wasted so many years, graduate school, fall into depressed state. For the first time I realized that I don't know anything. Complete failure
>22-25, tried to start taking art seriously (for real this time), but working full time job, and didn't help that I also kept teaching myself the wrong things.
>26-27, going back to school since I am clearly a terrible self learner, even if it costs me money out of my own pocket. Taking art fundamentals class. Learned more in that 1 year than I did in all 4 years of university. Still, surrounded by young kids who have only been drawing a year or two and are much better than me.
>Decide to apply for highly competitive animation course, somehow beyond all logic and reason manage to get in.

Anyhow, to answer the question, been struggling to git gud at drawing way longer than anyone should. All of these are just rough estimates, but I don't really know where I would actually pin point when I "started", or even where I started to take things serious. It's been way too long.

tbqfhwy senpai, I have never once felt like I 'got better.' this doesn't feel like the journey i thought it would be. i always thought getting better at drawing would more or less bring me to meet god or something, find some secret of the universe. but its just same ol same ol, make scratches on paper.

I feel like I am similar to you in a way. I too drew less than a year if we are talking about serious drawing and I have been taking a lot of long breaks. I do it not because drawing gets boring, it's mostly because of personal problems and how they affect my desire to do stuff.

I don't want to meet God, I want to be God, however it may sound.

I feel like people who started later have a lot more dedication, instead of being like me, where I turned to drawing because it's an extremely accessible skill and just stuck with it. I'm currently in a phase on focusing on traditional drawing, so I can come back to digital with stronger fundamentals and put together a portfolio for school.

Congrats to everyone who picked up drawing recently. I just finished a summer course where a lot of older students (talking recently retired old) were drawing for the first time and the excitement they expressed over learning how to convey form and texture was actually contagious.

>Admitting seriously means 2 hours per day

That's just an arbitrary number you put on it. Some people probably wouldn't even consider 2 hours a day serious. I'm not him but I always considered myself 'drawing seriously' since I started drawing consistently every day and reading/watching tutorials, rather than just random doodles here and there. It's relative, and not everyone is working on your metric (this is the first time I've even heard someone say 2 hours a day is 'drawing seriously').
>>
>>3044056

Of course it's arbitrary - though I based it on books, Nicolaides for example has a schedule of 15 hours per week - he may way way more. That's not the point: I want to see how much he progressed once he put his mind to it.

>Prove the naysayers wrong.

Thanks, I've been thinking about what you said. I think I'll keep some kind of art journal to document my progress honestly. It'll give me two extra incentives, as a diary is a kind of daily reality checker and also it will serve later as an example of someone going through the Sticky.

I honestly don't know how many years it'll take me to be finally good though... just as many as necessary, I guess. I just can't stand the idea of dying without having learned that skill.

>>3043076

Good luck Anon, and I agree 100% with what you say. As we grow older, a lot of our limitations stern from habits, repeating the same mistakes every year - at least that's my experience.
>>

Keep up updated, maybe become a namefag so we can follow your progress. It is going to be harder considering the brain loses its ability to learn new things the older you get but if you put in enough effort maybe you can overcome that. good luck

It still have a shit ton of mistakes, but I'm happy to know that every day's a learning process and I give myself the adequate time to learn and enjoy what I draw.

You're going to make it.

You'll draw like your inspired mentors; those artists you admire today, you'll be able to draw like them soon enough.

When someone asks you, "Hey can you draw me XX or YY?", you'll smile and say yes you can.

But above everything else... practice, practice, practice.

I believe in you all. If I can do it, you sure as hell can, as well.

Really cool rendering and nice colors but I think you should experiment more with composition. The picture seems like it's supposed to feel epic and exciting, but the flat angle of the scene as well as the distance between the angel and the dragon causes there to be very little visual tension in your picture. Try looking at shots from fight scenes in movies/ anime and action comics for reference.

If you use ref everytime one day you will end up drawing an aborted crocodile on strem and pretending that it's a kangoroo.

over-reliance on reference is not the same as using a reference.

you pull up reference when the gaps in your memory/imaginative work show up.

kim jung gi started out using references/life to compliment his imaginative work, and he still pulls up refs on occasion.

Been drawing since I was a kid but it doesn't matter since I never took it seriously (barely any studies), and there were many years I didn't draw at all. Been trying to make drawing a habit since the start of this year, going well so far. Next step is to work harder on them fundamentals.

28 years old. I've been drawing since I was a kid, but started taking it seriously in 2012. Problem is that since that year I've had a lot of hiatus in between... Started drawing at 16, pic related is one of my first drawings. It's JUST a drawing of a drawing. I didn't have to do any thinking for myself, I just copied a drawing. I honestly surprised myself with how it turned out that I stupidly thought that drawing was easy. I was wrong. So very wrong.

At around that time, my parents were pressuring me to go to college so I went for a 2-year animation course. One thing I learnt about art schools is that they don't teach non-artists how to draw. They teach already good artists how to get better. I wasn't a good artist, and I still hesitate to even call myself an "artist". I jumped off the deep end and I drowned. At 17, I succumbed to the harsh truth that I sucked and lost all motivation for art and just kinda did enough to graduate (which I did, thankfully). I learnt jackshit about animation at school, honestly.

At 18 the drive to make art was somehow re-ignited so I enrolled in an animation workshop where I learned more about actually animating in 3 months than that in the 2 years I spent in college (although it was mostly just us reading/watching The Animator's Survival Kit) .

It's pretty fucking nice when you trash your own art and skill to oblivion, but then when you check these threads the only people whom are better than you also are ~5 years older.

You shouldn't compare yourself to some random guys like me - because those number games are misleading - but to people with the kind of success or job you aspire to. I was surprised to learn that Guweiz is only 21.
Anyway, more power to you Anon if you're on the right track.

First old guy here, thanks for your kind words. In the last few days, I've been thinking about what other Anons said about the age-meme and reading stuff about neuroscience and learning. I'm convinced that it's entirely possible but it just needs to be done efficiently.

I'm going to do what I said in >>3044321 , it will be an interesting experiment. Also I intend to make a reading sheet for every book I'll try from the Sticky, so instead of just being "my blog" it may also prove interesting for other beginners.

I'm 29, been drawing as long as I can remember.
Started drawing a lot when I was 12, didn't get all that serious until I was about 17, had a lot of motivation and energy but no discipline or guidance.

Despite being shit tier I had a bit of an ego even if I didn't express it outwardly.
I expected myself to be a lot better than I had any reason to.

So I got frustrated, convinced myself I wasn't going to make it because it was easier than putting in the work to get good.
Took a lot of breaks, the longest lasting almost two years, from 2014-2016.

Decided to give it one last shot, got nothing better to do with my life anyways.
>>
>>3047030
I was 15 or 16 when I made it. Also a complete edgelord (like everyone else that age, so I don't feel very ashamed about it).

Wait, those numbers mark how many years you have been drawing? I assumed they represented the age you were when you did them and I'm probably not the only one.

I started drawing when I was a wee little kid, so I don't exactly know when. I know that I drew a shitton already when I was in first grade, but I sucked.
I have never actively sought to improve, because I don't fucking know how. If I improve it is basically trough trial and error because I don't know shit about anything regarding actual theory about drawing.

I also draw very irregularly these days because I can only draw if I have an idea in my head and I am enjoying drawing it. If I hit a roadblock, I just stop and let it go.
These are some sketches I made some days ago. I am trying to draw the one on the left digitally right now, but kinda got to a point where I am like "fuck it" because I hate doing lineart because I can't get the same sort of feel to it as I can with pen and paper.

I sorta want to color it without using the only way I know which is based entirely around using lineart as borders between colors, but I don't really know how one would go about coloring differently.

Wouldn't recommend going to FZD desu, research more about that place, I was going to go but then backed out because of the sheer amount of work they make you do there. They have you on insane working schedules, like 12 hours a day kinda shit. If you don't put in that amount of work you won't get what you want out of it! They make you do 3 years of work within the span of 1. Hard shit, but if you think you can handle that for a year, go ahead.

just looking out for ya :)

Learn color theory. The light colors on darker versions of that color makes it look boring and armature. For example: If you went with a hue of red for shadows on that green it would take it to another level.

25 years. I draw since I was 6, started to actually have a (rudimentary) critical sense at 15, but never managed to practice seriously - the more I learn, the less fun I have as I stare into the abyss of what I don't know or how little I have done.

I know if I threw every distraction away and worked for 2 years straight on improving myself I could reach a decent level, but I fail to set drawing as a top priority in my life. I don't have the stability to draw at ease, and I can't draw with this constant feeling of guilt.
It's kinda like depression, how the inertia feeds itself and all, but it only applies to drawing. Everything else in my life ticks normally. Weird. Must be the emotional attachment/investment and lack of concrete goals, as art is a pretty blurry subject.

Pic related was made last month or so. It doesn't get much better than this.
Got to /ic/ today to see if I could find a spark of inspiration, but everything passes by me without leaving any mark.

I'm thinking of doing a comic or some sort of concrete project to get out of the slump and just move forward no matter what. I just gotta try to make a story I don't care too much about "wasting" with my current quality of art, my expectations are my worst enemy most of the time.

Motivation fades, discipline lasts.
You can train discipline just like you can train art. Start there. Never think that it's too late to start, your future self will thank you.

Yeah, anon, I myself am a living proof of that.
Been learning Japanese by myself for less than 2 years now and am already halfway through it. I also managed to have a physical exercise routine just fine for 3 months, just for the hell of it.
No idea how to tackle art in the same way, though. Never found a method that "clicks" for me, so I keep having random bursts of productivity and stopping, re-assessing, reading tips and tutorials here and there, trying something new when I don't feel like shit... the cycle goes on.

But enough babbling, I don't want to hog attention with woe mes. Coming to /ic/ and reading shit is helping me feel a bit more ashamed and getting back a bit of steam. Off to bed now, good night and thanks for caring. Have this last sketch where I felt like I was expressing something, for a change.

>You can train discipline

Any advice on how to do it? The promises I make to myself are gone like the wind every next morning. There must be a way to trick that stupid brain of mine and make some kind of habits...

Start slow, 10 minutes every day. Once this has become routine increase the the time. Time yourself and keep track of how many days in a row you did without breaking the combo.

Also look up "no more zero days", some faggot on reddit did a pretty good write up for a healthy mentality to improve discopline, maybe it'll help.

Please give examples of good, late blooming artists. I'm 18 and only recently started drawing again, I need some inspiration. I'm fucking paranoid that I missed my chance of drawing while my mind develops with it.

You're not a late bloomer until your mid twenties, dude. Chillax, start your reps so when the premature age crisis hits you (OMG I'M 20, I'M OLD!), you'll already have some polished fundamentals and not feel like complete shit.

Technically you're a late bloomer if you startet after you were a small child. Thats the only way to become great during the prime of your life.

After that it dosn't matter if you start at 18, 28, 38 or 68, it'll take the same amount of time to get good.

from my childhood. my oldest drawings are 22 years old. I was a bullied looser who draw all the breaks instead of playing with other children in elementary school.

I'm 30.
I started at 16(at least seriously at 16)
I have a hard time saying where my art is currently at. A lot of things are on my mind. A lot of things are fucking with my current mental state. I can't create in this environment. Also, I don't like to retread ground. Some people will say my more realistic works are my best while more graphic work is worse and vice versa. I also don't like to recreate work of other artists and...

That last part? Is making art much harder for me right now. The entire world is prying and proding my mind for information. My art use to be invidividualistic but now it's the status quo. It's both awesome and disheartening. I don't want to make art like everyone else. I want to do my own thing. But when my own thing is the same as everyone else because of my influence... is it stale now? or is it flourishing? I created the things I did because that's how my mind works. I have to change my mind altogether to create something new but I don't think it will be something l like. it won't be me.

Fuck the world. Fuck my mind. Fuck the police.

I just want to go home. I don't want to paint anymore. It might be time for something new completely. A way to express who I am without retreading or worrying about if it's been done before. I like writing. I love poetry. I love music. I think I might combine the two, maybe include my art into the mix. With storytelling.

Might come out a bit silly a bit try hard. But I don't care. I just want to create and the thrill of creation is found in the new.

The problem is, i just feel like i am cheating and learning about how to draw everything from my head is so fucking hard.
