i think maybe 50:50, it really depends on your level. i did lots of imagination drawing, basically 5:95 but after i realised that i am shit artist and need to fill visual library i went full on reference studies and analizing forms and stuff, now im slowly balancing it out as skill improves im now at 80:20. the goal is of course 100 imagination if possible but that takes years if work.

10% studies 90% imagination (it's very bad, don't be me)
50% with reference although I found out that if I draw the same thing twice I can pull it off my memory and redraw something decent without a reference
