I wouldn't learn from Soejima if only because he's so one note. He's great at simple character designs, but everything else falls flat. Seriously, what the fuck is this design?

Simple character designs are hard to make memorable. Soejima does an amazing job at that, so I wouldn't write him off so easily.

Now I think what your doing is great. And I don't know where you are at in your art, but do not get stuck in a place where you are only practicing fundies and copying pictures. You will not improve, at least not fast anyway. The whole point of the fundamentals and copying pictures, is that you gain knowledge from your studies, and then apply them to more advance techniques and pictures. You keep challenging yourself over time, and you start to not only get better, but you start to retain those fundamentals. That is how people like Soejima can draw so well from imagination. So don't be afraid to start doing character designs, and making finished illustrations alongside your studies.
