I think you have real potential, please work harderived on how light casts on a 3 dimensional objects and I think that will improve the shading a lot. It is indeed weirdly cute. :^)

Work with the silhouette more so that it's more recognizable just by the shadow. You have too much going on with the wings or whatever those things are sticking up.
