I often draw out rough sketches of things rather than constructing basic form, does anyone else do this, is it wrong?

Yes.
You don't need to make those mannekins or construct from basic shapes or anything, but any rough sketch should always be building form. If you're not building form it's going to look flat.
The thing about the mannekins is they give you a sort of mental shortcut for how to show form. It gets you in the right headspace.
Unless you're intentionally going for a very flat 2d style, you don't ever do something "rather than" showing form. You do something -and- show form.
