this one is 2 hours in WIP, but i am hating the scale and perspective so im thinking about doing it again

i want the statue to be real big and real lit up and cracked and shit

i just don't know what references there are for the kind of composition i need to make

This is how messily I set up the composition.
What did I do right after this? Iron out the composition? Sharpen out the major details?

No. I sized down my brush and rendered out a rock in the foreground.

So yeah, I have no fucking clue what I'm doing.

I suggest you try a more graphical approach when you plan out your compositions. Most professional digital painters use a similar approach to this. Ofcourse, doodling and exploratory painting and drawing is also important.

First is some dope as stuff. Second I'm not sure about, I don't really know enough about art to critique it but I think maybe your composition is poor.

I think you'd benefit from using brushes with texture. I would work on my values if I were you. When you're starting out, defining a full range of light and dark values is going to help your paintings out a lot.

The first painting you posted is your best so far.
