Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

I found myself agreeing with you that topics just make it hard to focus on specific things in detail, and after being at it for so long I have a pretty huge list of things I need to buckle down and grind if I want to get anywhere at a reasonable pace.

As far as colors, I've heard to avoid using real greens, because people are naturally repulsed by the color (someone please feel free to elaborate on this)
also, it seems you aren't focusing on values enough, eyes are a sphere and will gradually darken as the form moves away from the lightsource,

Many things,some set up: There are 3 main gods in the game and they are a really big part of it and the lore.So, there is the skill "magic" in which you cast spells from a spell book that everyone has, this spellbook has a bunch of fight spells, some misc ones like turning bones to food and a bunch of useful teleports. This teleports normally take you to main cities or important places.
So there is this pretty advanced quest in which you collect a bunch of important items to unlock a piramid, and when you go in you learn that it was the temple for an ancient god that nobody remembers, and the archeologist that asked you for help to open the piramid was actually one of the last followers of this god that remains alive, he tells you of the insane power of this god and tells you that you can pray to the altar in the temple to unlock this god's magic, once you do your normal spell book turns into the "Ancient" spell book, which has a crap ton of really strong spells and a bunch of teleports with weird names. So if you get the appropiate runes and use some of this high level teleports you normally get dumped somewhere barren or awkward and most of the times useless. Most players don't give much thought to it until it dawns on you that this locations that you were being teleported to USED to be big thriving cities, hubs and altars but the spells were crafted so long ago that none of them remains standing. No NPC points this out, no dev blog, no anything, the loe is done so well it's insane.

honestly, your attempt wasn't that bad, but it's clear you aren't too great with proportions or perspective yet. good idea to try to find reference photos next time for help on this, and always think in 3d forms

i lassooed and rotated some stuff around to match things more and it already looks heaps better

your value range is incredibly narrow- you should try to push this
your lighting scheme -seems- to suggest directional lighting but there aren't any highlights or darker shadow regions to really describe form

when choosing colours you'll wanna try to play with colour temperatures. warm lighting + cool shadows or vv.
also skin has a lot of different colours and shit
i didn't really do this well so sorry about that.

i think your main problem is the facial anatomy, i moved some things around with the liquify tool and she already looks a lot less like an uncanny bad taxidermy.
for the colors i opened the color balance window and played around a bit until she looked more human(mostly just moved sliders away from the green a bit for some contrast)
also i'd suggest you ditch the weird texture brush and go back to the hard round brush for now, it doesn't look that great if you don't know how to use it.

i could've spent more time on this but just wanted to point out a few things to keep in mind when painting:

-make sure you know where the light source is coming from
-make sure the perspective is 100% correct
-darker areas of the same object touched by a light source are more saturated than light areas (especially the areas directly reflecting the light)

Did anyone save leo516's rpg hero? I want to draw a shot of everyone's character but i can't find leo's.

I wish there was some kind of reboot. Don't get me wrong here, the idea is neat but joining las nowdays is like dumping your work into the void... there is no real competition and just a handful of active users by now. Maybe if you could add comments to other people's drawings, idk... Can I get some crits on this? I wanted to make him floating and I wanted it to feel like he was really pushing out his chest, but it just feels stiff, even if I do a gesture for it beforehand. That's something I struggle with, keeping the gesture while you begin constructing things. I just end up losing the pose the more and more I develop an image most of the time.

Even in a community not on 4chan you will get a lot of bad advice - beginners giving other beginners advice.

I'll tell you a secret that if followed will make you better than 99% of all artists I know who are beginners.

Spend 300% longer on your artwork than a pro, and you can do pro, or near pro work, right from the start, and if you're young enough, maybe even get a job from it - if just selling commission in galleries.

I have a friend who is a world famous artist and this is what she did. Also if you read the bio of many famous artists who made it young, this is essentially what a lot of people do by working harder.

Art is not like many other crafts, beginners, and people who aren't experience, make the mistake of thinking they have to reach a certain level before they can do what they want or even earn a living. It's NOT true, and that's why 90% of people who persue art never make a career out of it.

If you're willing to spend 300 hours on a painting, your painting will look as good as a true professional who spent 30 hours. You don't need to learn everything first. You can be making good art nearly right away, and it will just take many years before you can make it much faster.

Using this method I'm telling you, it should take around 2 - 4 years before you can make really good art instead of 10-15. That's 2-4 years before you could start selling things.

Study the life of people who are successful and don't take the advice of fellow beginners because they will cause you to focus on all the wrong things.

Dedication>appeal>perspective>reference>knowledge/anatomy

Learn in that order, and you will be amazing. Perspective and ref drawing can be learned together.

15+ hours on a piece either means poor planning, fixing a ton of mistakes, or a fuck ton of rendering that could probably be shortened by bashing or doing a 3d base. I've done a few that were 20+ hours and i just take breaks and go work out if I'm getting annoyed with it. Those 20+ hour pieces could've been shortened significantly by doing thumbnails or a 3d base for composition, and having a very clear goal in mind on what I'm trying to show in the painting.

Some days I have to organize my days around LAS. I have not complaints, LAS has been a huge help for me.
I have had to change my activities very seldom, for example, some weeks ago I had to leave my friends because we were planning more and more things and I hadn't drawn that day yet, so I came back running to my home, drew for LAS and came back with them for dinner and going out. It served as a lesson, last time I'm going to go out of home without drawing first.

Some days, when i am supposed to do something else important it does feel a bit of a pain. Also planning activities with friends is a bit hard because the most of the activities usually happen when i would like to draw. This would be solved by changing my daily rhythm, but with work and stuff it's isn't that easy.

It still feels a bit awkward to explain that i have to draw to some people who really can't grasp the concept of "doing something every day" and keeping yourself in check. For some reason these people think that i am using drawing as a excuse and that it couldn't be a serious thing that people do.
