There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

what brush do you use and how do you choose your colors?
>>
>>3021517
this study I painted in clip studio paint with the 'oil paint flat' brush, default settings.

I just eyeball the colours, normally starting by adding in one colour for the darkest area of the picture, then two or three colours for the midtones, and one for the highlights. All other colours I then try to achieve by mixing these five colours, if that doesn't work, only then I introduce new midtone colours.

>>3021602
In the efforts of NOT shitposting, you obviously get construction decently, you just need better studying skills to evolve out from weeb symbol drawing.

Fags here will say "muh Loomis" but Loomis is basically just construction: the book. You need to study more anatomy (or get better at studying in general), which will make it easier to, say, make skirts that don't look like paper.

WHY ARE BOXES SO HARD TO DRAW

>>
>>3021678
>>3021684
>>3021689

You WILL need to do a lot of grinding, but honestly that's just an "artist" thing. You don't need to become a master artist tomorrow, and you certainly don't need to abandon drawing your waifus.

But you should at least try to set some goals for yourself. Like, "this week I'm going to draw from at least one reference head, focusing solely on the eyes so that next week I can focus on incorporating what I learn about eyes into muh weebshit pics". Or "this week I'm gonna concentrate hard on just drawing boobies. Just nothing but straight boobies for 5-7 days.". You won't become an expert at eyes or boobies, but overtime you'll definately get a lot better at it.

And as you get better at drawing anatomy and other realistic objects you'll get better at simplifying said elements down so that you can perfect a distinct style rather than just sticking boxes together.
>>

>this is what /beg/gars actually believe
>>
>>3021741

Don't listen to >>3021742. Basically like most noob tricks it CAN work, but it's a crutch that will make drawing difficult images way harder than it needs to be. You need that fine motor control, you need that ability to draw clean and clear. If you still wind up drawing messy that's cool, but if you can't be specific when you need to be you're NGMT.

IMO arms a bit long, head a tad small, the hand is also a bit small. Maybe slightly shorter torso would be nicer. IDK.

Ulna\radius is approximately the same length as humerus, that is not the case in the picture. Elbow is approximately level at lower ribs, boobs usually overlap that if big enough, like in this case, so it would end up around the point where boob ends. Palm is almost the size of the face in length, not much wider then the wrist tho. And the head is usually the reference to all the other parts of the body but I'm too lazy to measure things up accurately so I am judging by the eye here.
>>
>>3021602

Try some basic perspective. Study it to the point where you can get a simplistic mannequin in 2-point perspective and copy a simple geometric figure, like a cube, proportionally in a given scene. Also consider studying anatomy after that, even vague understanding of what attaches to what helps. Proportions - pic related. How to measure things - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzDGO0LssEM

>>3021678

Yes and no. You grind to understand, not grind for the sake of grind. How much grinding till you get whatever you are studying depends on you and possibly the material you are studying.

Your character is falling over backwards, her knees are not bent enough to support her. Also you need to work on your hands, she is holding that rapier wrong. Everything else is "style" so i wont grind you on that.

I can pick apart lots of the smaller things but just keep doing what youre doing and experimenting im sure you will figure it out.

Lastly, i would recommend going to /i/ if you just want to post art and get (you)s.

based on a request I tried to draw the character 'clover' from fallout 3, this is the result.

Now here's the problem: in none of the screenshots I used as reference I was able to see the back or side of the characters head - as a result I think I really fucked up the hair, but I'm not entirely sure.

also something about the pose irks me, but I'm not sure what - maybe the shoulders?

Would be great if someone could take a look at it.

your anatomy is shit, just look at those shoulders
your perspective sucks, just look at the gun
your face fundamentals suck too, symmetry is messed up

also i googled the character, she doesnt look that brown in the game, that also brings me onto the point of the clothes being fucked up. theres so many issues that you need to go over your basics.

while all valid criticism, not particularly helpful. I know my anatomy is shit, I wouldn't be posting here to get feedback if it wasn't.
Perspective wise, I think the gun can be fixed simply by changing how I drew where the trigger is placed.
Skin-tone: I probably corrected too far into the other direction by taking out all that orange, it's the result of trying to make the sky blue rather than the fallout yellow/green.

The main feedback I want is about said problems with anatomy. I know something is off with the pose (either shoulder/torso in relation to head, or head in relation to the rest of the body).
>>
>>3022445
She's about to tip over.
>>
>>3022478
you need to self study for better results in that regard, however pay attention to your ratios as your drawing, keep a reference up if you must. ideally instead of fixing this issue youd do a study in poses but with just the pose, no extras.

the head is too far right
shoulder widths inconsistent
breasts too high
wheres her rib cage?
i know the pose youre going for, make sure you convey the depth properly in it

sure i can point out a rather long list but it wont be helpful in the long run.try drawing the skeleton over the top now and compare the ratios to a real one. also i think the guns stock needs to be darker too

You're aiming way higher than your current skill level calls for. On the bright side, finishing illustrations is a skill in itself, but don't forget to practice the fundamentals, especially perspective. If you want pleasant paintings, look into composition and color, they can do a lot for you. Also what the others said, but don't make that lead you to not finishing pieces anymore.
>>
I appreciate the people here who lurk and ACTUALLY provide constructive criticism. Cause honestly nobody in here is a terrible artist. Its all just little things that need practice and improvement. Even if we all are beginners we can still help nudge each other in the rught direction I think. No reason to be an asshole about it though.

Hey guys I'm new to /ic/, had a few questions as I wanted to get into drawing.

Firstly, I do eventually want to get into figure drawing but for now I want to draw clothing pretty well to plan out my design projects,( I'm not a art or design student or anything so I have no resources) where would be a good place or resource you guys have to learn how to draw garments and such? E.g. jeans, jackets etc. to a good standard.

Secondly, I need some colouring pencils, I already bought some cheap muji pencils for sketching and such but I was wondering should I just get any old colouring pencils or are there any good inexpensive ones I could get off amazon or from any shops (uk based preferred).

Sorry if that's alot to ask but thanks if you can help!

any reason to not be messy in photoshop?
with traditional you can actually ruin the end picture by being sloppy
>>
>>3023024
Be messy and loose. It's easier to get ideas out that way solely because you have ctrl+z, layers, and a bunch of other tools (crutches) to facilitate a more refined idea generation process better.
>>
>>3023024
Why be messy? it just creates more work down the road on the piece. Just get it right the first time in a couple strokes instead of repainted it over and fighting with it being drawn/painted poorly and lazily.

Thanks.

Pic unrelated I'm just posting something from my sketchbook to catch your eye and get an answer faster

So I've been trying to read and watch a lot of the material from the sticky, sycra and proko and loomis, but I just feel it's all this scrambled stuff and I just feel like I need a cohesive path to follow. My question is this:

Is there any like set path of resources I should use and milestones to follow etc to get better? Like my end goal is to draw fantasy stuff so I know to start I need to learn fundies, but when do I know to move onto the next level? What should I be learning and for how long? I don't want to be learning something beyond my skill level if you get what I mean. Sorry for the confusion question I just feel so idk...I really like being efficient and I just feel like the way I'm learning is very inefficient. I feel like I need like a curriculum set in stone to follow

just draw, draw, draw. you'll learn more from following your cat around and drawing him than by watching youtube videos. its often pointless to watch instructional videos without basic mileage. for example you wont understand or be able to follow any of vilppu's figure drawing videos until you have spent hours drawing figures and failing at it.

Been working on a Venom drawing. Finally got the pen linework done, time to move onto shading. Any helpful tips/guides when it comes to shading heads/faces?
>>
>>3023068
That doesn't help me. If you told me to just draw then I'd draw the fundies forever and never get to drawing what I want to draw because I'm too preoccupied trying to get good. I could be a master of fundies but not know it unless some rubric or some shit said I was fine
>>
>>3023078
dont worry, just draw :)

Its all i had available to me at work at the time. Work with what you got.

Impossible which is why you need to draw.
>>

I'll be 80 years old drawing perfect lines but still practicing wrist control. My wife and kids will have left me in a mental hospital where I will hang myself because I finally realized I could move onto gesture but the doctor said I only had a week

Are you really supposed to hold your drawing stick like this?
>>
>>3023098
Do you do this with the stylus too?
>>
>>3023024

Different people have different ways to draw and paint. If it's comfortable for you then do it. Be messy/loose all you want as long as you don't get lost in it.

You can't do it with the stylus. Tablets don't recognize such a strong tilt.
>>
>>3021458
Hispanic Chris Pratt, is that you?
>>
>>3023098
You should hold the pen in the way that best facilitates the kind of mark you want to make the first image is to do tight details and the second and third is to lay down swatches of value you hold the pen that way to train for when you are going to hold a brush. If you plan on doing mostly digital work there is no reason to train using those kinds of grips.
>>
>>3023098
Usually only when you're working on a large drawing with charcoal or pastel

It makes drawing straight lines much easier if you are using vine charcoal
>>
Yes, mainly for gestures and lines, then go back to grip#1 for the small intricate detail work. It's a switching between the two depending on how small you draw
>>
So i began drawing/painting landscapes a few days ago, im having a lot of fun with shapes, but when it comes to detail, i fuck up a top. Here i was really stuck in drawing cliffs, making the layers distinct from each other, the "river" isnt clear and everything is very blurry. Any tips how to improve?
>>
>>3023132
dont paste a airbrush or textures on top of your drawing lmao, no wonder its all watered out

>>
>>3023132
That's one of the coolest fucking styles I've ever seen. Mind explaining your process?
>>
I based my drawing on this image. For me, the light just looked like this. Also had difficulties with the overall color, since everything is blue-ish + closer objects get lighter, which made no sense to me. I learned, the farther away something is, the lighter it is.

Found out today my monitor gamma was way too bright and did some adjustments. Thought I'd share here since I found it interesting.

I made several layers for each mountain, colored them flat and at the end blended them with a "tree" brush with color jittering, but its not really the effect i aimed for.
>>

ruined
>>
Would it help or hurt to draw the same still life multiple times?
>>
>>3023155
>colored them flat and at the end blended them with a "tree" brush with color jittering
LOL
drawing isnt that easy honey, you have to do each tree, each leaf indiviudal. and draw only with hard round brush, special effects like fog, clouds, epic lighting etc. come after you finished it
>>
>>3023166

As long as you're learning from it.
>>
>>3023153
>>3023163
I kinda agree that it was better with more contrast.
>>
>>3023167
I seek ways to improve, sure, can you provide me any source?

And any reason why should i make my life hard if every freaking concept artist photobashes, uses premade brushes and photoshop tricks to make it look good?

I've been doing the exercises in drawabox, but what are some great box form + perspective exercises that'll help me grasp and understand them more?

How do I get as good as you?
>>
>>3023312
effort and time my guy
>>
>>3023315
mostly effort. It's taken me longer to be able to do this than I'd care to admit. There are ways of streamlining gitting good, make sure to study in on them while progressing. Each piece should be a step forward and a challenge, while also re-enforcing what you just learned. I would take the time to learn one thing and get it good, then use it a few times before trying to learn another, and it has sent me back months below the progress I should be making

best of luck friends. And thank you for the compliments
>>
>>3023246
Thats fucking cute I wish I had a friend like that.

You need to measure shit more often. How big is his face compared to his hair? How many eyes wide is his face? How much of his face should his lips take up? Questions like that.

What book are you using?
