this almost feels like a forced meme. those examples aren't attractive by a long shot. sadly the artists painted them more attractive than they even were a lot of the time so i guarantee they looked even worse in reality

Knowing you, though, you'll probably think I just "don't get it".
You're not Van Gogh, Chun. People won't discover your art in 50 years and think you were the greatest.

You obviously have a drive, and I respect that, but you need to get off our high horse and grind and actually get good before self-promoting yourself nonstop.

Yes, da Vinci by way of The Greek -- Mannerist style -- and he worked for the pope so it's all justified.

>Yuck! Is this what Picasso meant when he said he could draw like Raphael?
It's mostly a touch-and-go influence. In his childhood drawings, you see some mythic characters that could be found in Raphael. In the later 19th century work, you can see that he manages to block in multiple figures like Raphael. Look into the Café drawings, they're often a mélange of Raphael, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec. What do you have against exposed feet, it looks like Bassano's Last Supper.

>>
>>3022813
No, the jpg is stretched. None of what you said makes sense anyway. Ancient Greek art influence is not substantial in Leonardo, nor would an earnest interest in it lead to mannerism in any case. Leonardo was not a mannerist. Neither in the modern concept of the term as a historical style, nor in the sense of his contemporaries. Leonardo wrote against mannerism in general even before the Mannerist style as we know it today, which is a distinctly Clementine style, was even born. Just imagine how much more Leonardo would have blamed the Mannerist style. If by "The Greek" you mean El Greco, there is not one hour that Leonardo was a contemporary of El Greco.

I can not see any that could be by Raphael from Picasso. He never reached the subtlety and surety of line that Raphael had. Nothing of what characterize Raphael can be found in Picasso. Their personalities are too different.

People can never be happy for the success of others because it expose their own failures. Ironically they like to idolize people they want to be, and become loyalists. This is the worst trait an artist can possess because it will stop them from ever progressing.
All because of opinions or following a certain minority group... salty bastards.

personally, my art has a ton of flaws but at least i recognize it instead of having 0 self awareness and pretending to be 'successful'
>>
>>3023245
art is not about flaws but inspiration.
art is not about limiting oneself. it is about discovering your strengths and utilizing them to your fullest potential.
art comes down to the idea and the statement that define the work in essence. its not a matter of nitpicking.

a flaw from one perspective can be strength in another. do not let your ideology blind you.

for instance i liked your painting of admiral yi which was not realistic, very eastern stylized look to it but still good. (yeah i looked you up to see other things)
i almost like the ukranian angel portrait.

Ok Chun I was the one hating on you.
I want to hear what you have to say in defense of your artwork. I really do want to see what you're going for in your work since you seem to be so excited about it.

Given the subject of the thread, I would assume that you are trying to depict conventional beauty in this piece.
Why then do the women's faces seem so grotesque? Their eyes are beady, and you use pure black to highlight wrinkles in uncanny, thick outlines.
Furthermore, why is their posture so awkward and stiff? Stiffness and awkwardness can be used well, but in the case of portraying femininity and beauty, it doesn't work. There is no feeling of movement or weight.

Furthermore, what is with that butt??? It looks like two bowling balls in a plastic bag. It makes it look like you have no understanding of anatomy.

I could go on, but imma stop there. Remember: I honestly want to know the answers to these questions. I am not just hating on you because I am "jealous and delusional" (as you accused me to be). I do not see beauty or merit in your work, so I am giving you a chance to help me see the light. I am not lying when I say I don't see much merit at all. I am not trying to piss you off. I'm just sharing my opinion.
You don't have to simply address the points I brought up here. Feel free to enlighten me on however many points as you wish.

PS: I find your lack of humility to be offputting. This is just a personal thing, but you need to learn that humbleness is very important

You still haven't defended your artwork.
I honestly want to hear what you have to say about your work.
Why should I appreciate your work?
Why does it have merit?
What do I gain from this piece?
What am I not getting?

Give me your artist's statement.

The painting depicts traditional Korean (and Asian) beauty, in order to challenge the modern views of beauty within Asian societies that are heavily influenced by anime, manga, and plastic surgery.

It depicts eyes of the women with slants and lines, yet they are quite beautiful. This is again a challenge against the racist stereotype that Asians have "slanted" and narrow eyes, which, while true statistically, doesn't mean they are inferior or less beautiful in any way.

You can say the women are not beautiful, or the painting is not successful.

I will say the women are indeed beautiful, and the painting is quite successful in all levels of critical examination.

This comes down to the matter of truth, and who is right or wrong. I believe there is truth in the eye of God, and among many opinions there are those that are closer to truth and those that are farther from it.

I believe there are people who have an affinity for truth and those who have an affinity for falsehood. I believe I am one of those who has a tendency for truth in midst of chaos.

The tiger symbolizes truth. And the woman holding the tiger is the queen because she is closer to the truth.

In our time, truth is sick. The lady in green clothing is a human who is offering warmth and care to the tiger brought by the nymphs of the mountain (in the background).

The subject of beauty is a form of projection of power by people of specific culture or ethnicity. Something to think about.

>>3023834
I never said I was the "greatest artist of all time". That must be a subconscious reflection of your impression of me.
>>
>>3024132
and you thought about this before or during the painting? or just made it up after people started asking the meaning.
>>
>>3024168
I never make up anything. I think of myself as an oracle that murmurs truth unconsciously. Images are constructed as if being revealed in a dream. The subconscious reveals what to paint and where. The conscious part of me doesnt know the full meaning of the work until it sees the entire image upon completion.

I never plan anything consciously. I refuse to do so because I believe art should be free from planning which is done as if it were some kind of cognitive feat. Planning destroys the merits of the painting due to spontaneity and accidental discovery. It also kills chance for experimentation.

Meaning is interpreted in retrospect just like meaning is attached to works of art in historical context. The Scream by Munch is often used to illustrate the horrors of World War I and II but the painting was actually painted before the two wars happened.

>>3024196
>That must be a subconscious reflection of your impression of me.
>I think of myself as an oracle.

This is why you're so infuriating and unlikable. You don't have a shred of humility.

This is another reason why you won't be successful unless you change yourself. Even if your art was good, your personality would still turn people away.

You're insufferable, cumbum.

I know you'll probably just say that I'm jealous (I'm not).
You're deluded.

It's hard to like art that one may have before once you learn the foundations and general rules to creating a masterpiece. I don't mean a masterpiece in Old Masters sense, just in a completed and refined sense -- there's merit in anything that someone creates if they have the tools to bend original rules, and it took time spent in conscious effort of growth, but what you make just doesn't appeal to that.

Yes, you've grown since you started but it still seems like you're not painting out of a good college try, and instead are painting in your comfort zone while intentionally going against what you learned/should learn. Does that make sense? I'm not trying to be negative - you have skills that can be pushed, so it frustrates others that you're happy where you are at the moment. Harsh lines and blocks of color have their place, so does a lack of depth, but you can do better and posting your own work in a "best of..." or "greatest..." themed thread is sort of out of left field.

Thanks for liking those works, anon.

It's bound to happen that people will like certain paintings and dislike others among those that I've produced.

I just have faith that the painting - Queen of Goguryeo - is one of my best works.

The women especially the one at the center is really beautiful to me.

Fighting Siberian Tigers is an amateurish work with wrong proportions. It has nice colors though.

Admiral Yi portrait, to me, is not real art. It was a commission and a poor attempt at portraiture.

Ukrainian angel is alright.

Thanks for looking at all of my art on my blog, anon. I would love to check out your art as well. Wanna be friends? :)

I never attacked your work. Don't say I'm attacking your art because I'm not

>You make it into an issue of my personality after trying to stomp down on my art, but it's really the issue of you trying to deny the merits of my art, not my personality.

Wrong I'm actually critiquing your personality. It is a CRITIQUE board.

>calls himself an oracle
>says his work has divine meaning
>can't actually take critiques
>nor can he take opinions that oppose his viewpoints
>comes back to a place where he ruined his own credibility
>keeps posting artwork that doesn't change, showing he's not actually practicing the craft that which he calls masterpieces
>has "finished" pieces, yet needs an essay to even give the painting any meaning. As a result, he has a "Tell, don't show" mentality
>closed minded to anything that doesn't praise his artwork
>uses his artwork as a shield to protect his own personal ideology
>moves goalposts constantly
>always plays victim, and changes the argument (even if it avoids a topic)
>calls things false because in his eyes, they aren't true, even though in reality there is much evidence to prove otherwise

You know, everybody has their own list of things that are "wrong" with them. I have a long one, all 7-point-something BILLION people on this earth have a list of negative things. We all have lists whether we like it or not. It's a matter of acceptance of other people's lists and a willingness to make compromises with an open mind. There are artists from ALL walks of life on this site. Some less or more fortunate than others, different backgrounds, environments, mentalities, etc. For you to say, "any of you who don't like my art just don't "get it" and won't ever "understand" the "greater meaning" because it is "high contemporary art." Instantly alienates you. It shows you don't actually respect anyone on this board nor are willing to hear what they have to say. It shows you aren't willing to make compromises. It shows your lack of humility.
>>
>>3025672
Well then I must remind you that the reason why you assume I have an intolerant personality for criticism is precisely because people tried to stomp down on my art which has merit - particularly my best works.

Even if you never attacked my work & you are attacking my "personality" you must keep in mind the sequence of events that led me to this spot.

Your long sarcastically written laundry list of criticisms reveals to me that you are just hell bent on criticizing me with no real purpose & substance other than to defame me.

Sure it is a critique board, but shouldn't the critique be of someone's art, not personality?

I never said stuff about greater meaning blah blah high contemporary art. All that garbage you just spewed out is a reflection of your own inner state of mind and severely distorted opinion regarding contemporary art. You seem to hate contemporary art without real reasons or being able to understand it. You are making a bunch of unnecessary & completely unfounded assumptions about me & contemporary art in general.

And it is your pathetic wish & desire to have me "alienated" by constantly repeating that I have issues and will be alienated.

If you keep repeating something over & over, no matter how false it is, people start to get the impression that it's true, & that's what you want, apparently.

Sure, I can concede I don't have much humility. But your crimes are much much worse than mine. Mine? Lack of humility?

And yours? Vicious & incessant urge to criticize, reject, stomp down, defame & denigrate someone for making art that you hate for ideological reasons, making up stuff on the way & making unnecessary and unfounded accusations about my character.

You are the real criminal in this situation, & you deserve to be banned permanently by the mods.

You keep making stuff up and attacking my "personality" saying I am autistic and what not. You are a real criminal and a real offender of rules of civility and civil community.

Look man. I know this is 4chan and it’s a fucking cesspit filled with people who will tear you down out of jealosy and insecurity. I’m pretty new to this board, and not one of the anons you’ve been arguing with, but I really hope you start listening. There is value in their critique. You can’t just plug your ears and scream about how your art has merit. That’s not for you to decide. Maybe it speaks to you, and if you’re making art purely ror yourself, then that’s perfect. It doesn’t matter what other people think.

But when you release it to the world, particularly to strangers (MOST important - people you know personally will rarely give you honest critique, especislly if you have built up your personality around ‘being an artist’ and they know this - and it sounds like you have), you’re going to hear how your art communicates with other humans. That’s what art is right? Communication? You’re in one of the few places where you can recieve honest critique about how your art communicates. You’re recieving an overwhelming majority of anons saying your work doesn’t work - and that you’ve regressed, or gone down the wrong track. You can’t just them they’re wrong, that the art is speaking beautiful phrases and that they’re just too thick to understand. That;s not how art works. Sure, pieces and artists can be divise, but when you are getting so much of the same criticism, it’s time to consider that it may have merit.
>>
I myself spent a good half hour or so going through your blog. I love a broad range of art, and your earlier work showed real potential. You were lacking a little in some technical areas, but there’s a real gamesmanship to your brushtrokes and use of colours. There’s something in them that genuinely speaks to me. But your newer works have none of this. They are lacking more in all technical aspects, while simultaneously lacking in soul and energy. I don’t know what your journey has been, what place art has in your life and in your identity, but it seems like you have taken a large misstep somewhere along the way, and I’d urge you to consider stepping back, letting yourslf be vulnerable, and rethink these things.

To me, it seems as though you’ve taken on the mantle of “artist” as your primary identity, the thing which you derive all your selfworth from. And you want to feel good (better) about yourself (we all do). Maybe somewhere along your artistic journey, you were struggling, and instead of pushing yourself harder to explore and practice and forge further down a difficult pathway (with the possibility of ‘failing’ and thus becoming a ‘failure’ as a person), you subconsciously decided to take the easy path, doing what you knew, doing things that had been done before and were proven to be safe. But that is failure. Can’t you feel it when you work? The fact that you aren’t pushing yourself like you used to?
>>
You seriously have talent and the potential to be great, but you are not there and you are headed down the wrong path. Yes, there are people here who will tear anyone and everyone dwon for no reason. It’s fine to disregard people like that. But there are people here, artists who, like myself, genuinely want others to succeed, and it’s frustrating to watch and listen to you tooting your own horn and ignoring all advice while going so far astray. We literally just want you to make it. I didn’t spend all this time writing this to ‘stomp on your art’, or to make you feel bad. But because to succeed as an artist outside of art school you need to hear it and I really, really hope you listen.

>criticisms reveals to me that you are just hell bent on criticizing me with no real purpose & substance other than to defame me.
I'm not going to spell it out for you. If you think this whole thing is about defaming, stomping your work, or even baseless accusations, you are very, very wrong. There is a lot of evidence to show that you really don't care about anyone and their opionions on this board, yet you keep coming back with art that looks the same claiming it is the next "masterpiece." Further evident by the way you protect said piece from any sense of negativity. It happens every time you come here.

>If you keep repeating something over & over, no matter how false it is, people start to get the impression that it's true.
It seems like this is something you're aiming for, actually. Why else would you come back.

>shouldn't the critique be of someone's art, not personality?
Ok let me just crit your work. OH WAIT, I CAN'T. I wonder why?

If you want people to stop arguing with you, be open about critiques, hear what people have to say, and respect their judgement. It may be right or wrong, but that doesn't mean you should consider them "incapable of understanding"

If you tear apart anyone's personality, you'll look like an asshole. I tore yours apart because it is obviously apparent that you are not aware of who you are. I look like an asshole but, I did so to show how RIDICULOUS you are.

Let me ask you this:
When someone critiques your work in a way you don't like. How do you respond?
Not a loaded question. I am curious as to what goes through your mind when someone says something you don't like/ goes against your ideological viewpoint

>>3023072
Howabout you explain your reasoning for calling two people delusional and jealous
>Delusional - based on or having faulty judgment; mistaken
>Jealous - feeling or showing envy of someone or their achievements and advantages

You have assumed that based on their honest viewpoints that 1. their perception of your artwork is not actually correct, and 2. they are envious of your achievements and growth.
If you were to actually read what they have to say, you would realize they are neither jealous or delusional. To make such a claim is rather unprofessional, and frankly says more about who you are than I have said already. You misinterpret meaning and intention and put yourself on the pedestal. You manipulate interpretations so that anything "wrong" or "misunderstood" is seen as victimizing in your eyes

>>3023114

"Good" is subjective. "Good" is a way of differentiating something from "Bad", which is also subjective. Usually open-mindedness means you are willing to consider new ideas. Except you already have an idea of "good" in your head, disregarding anything else that doesn't align with your ideology, hence you are not open-minded.

If the crit is valid and REAL & he or she is a friend who cares about me, why wouldnt I accept his or her criticism?

First I assess what are the person's limitations in understanding art & whether his or her views are ideologically distorted or not. I examine what are the precise reasons & explanations the person gives for criticizing my work, & whether the issues are actually there & real. & whether the "flaws" are actually strengths that define the style, or not.

I examinwle whethet it is the ideologically distorted view of the person that caused the strengths to be seen as flaws & whether I should at all listen to the acidic & irrelevant - irrelevant because its not real- garbage the troll on the internet is trying to spew on me as valid criticism. The answer is in most cases no.

Ive accepted many forms of criticism before on /ic/, whether by acknowledging it directly or fixing the issue when I notice it afterwards.

In the past I made many anatomical mistakes without realizing it. Only after a year passes & I look back at the flawed piece do I notice & take action to remedy it.

Also my friends & instructors give me valid criticism all the time that is day & night compared to the acid garbage by you troll here. A picture could be too noisy or busy with colorful patterns. The neck should be thinner for sake of elegance. Red pops out the most among all colors & using it carefully allows you to make the muscle turn around the arm. same reason why the nose should be red or pink to make it protrude over other surrounding colors & pop. There should be a triangular relationship to form a dynamic and solid composition rather than having all figures line up standing vertically. The eye movement should exit the image & re-enter from another angle rather than getting trapped within the image. The figure should have a clear overall sense of direction of light source, & not be just aimless blotches of highlights & shadows.
>>
>>3026586
>ignores all the quotes that proves Chunbum is full of shit

>If the crit is valid and REAL
Stopped reading there. Are you serious? That isn't up for you to decide.
I see where everything is going wrong though. You have a certain set of values in what is regarded "real." Real as in, the standards that which you have predetermined within your own ideologistic reality where certain ideas and values must remain constant. As such, when someone as much as comments on aforementioned values, you are quick to assume that their viewpoint is "distorted" and instantly cast them aside. What are these values? Well, they are usually the style and meaning of the painting. These two ideas you hold dearly to your heart and just like a mother protects her child, you vow to protect the very fragile essence of your style and meaning. When someone threatens these two values, like an enraged tiger mother, you are quick to pounce and dismiss anyone who might say otherwise.

>I examine the precise reasons the person gives for criticizing my work, & whether the issues are actually there & real

That person saw something that they consider significant enough to comment on. Are you saying that what they saw was never real? Are you saying other people's point of view isn't actually true because, again, it doesn't align with your predetermined set of beliefs and values? Are you saying that someone cannot truly "see" without seeing through you first? Are you seriously that fucked up in the head? Why even ask for a critique when you know that they cannot truly understand because they are not you?

>that appeal to authority

You are a narcissistic, egotistical, arrogant, pretentious bitch who holds close fragile ideological viewpoints that have no greater meaning in the context of this universe

I thought there was some shred of hope. Some decency in who you really are. I was ready to be proven wrong. But each reply led me otherwise. You are at a level that I wish not to stoop down to.
>>
>>3026320
(continued)
Even when using abstract colors and shapes on a figurative subject, there should be clear highlight, midtone and shadow that correctly follow the anatomy. when the figure is facing the light source, and the viewer is also facing the figure directly from the direction of light, the figure will appear to have horizontal bands or stripes of light and shadow, like on a staircase.

these are some of the criticisms and suggestions i got from people in real life. and they truly like me for the work that Ive done and I admire them for the work theyve done.

the two people are delusional and jealous because they think they know more than a professor when they are practically nobody.

your opinion does not affect my success in anyway. because its delusional, false and not real. it only exists inside your head as product of distorted ideology.

then should i accept "bad" art as well? dont be ridiculous.

you need to say more to prove your false claims , which you wont be able to cuz they are false.
>>

I feel like this has a lot to do with the Capulet family being represented by red and the Montague family being represented by blue.
Juliet clutches at the blue necklace over her heart, and her eyes, and the stone on her head are blue, while her clothing is red under the white gown.
But is that color code ever stated in the original play?
I remember it from movies and stuff, but I don't remember it ever being mentioned when reading. Does anyone know if I'm wrong or if there was just a tradition of staging the play with those colors representing the families?
>>
>>3026719
Okay. Who are you to tell me I shouldn't decide what's real and what's not? You are completely ignoring that it's my right to discern what is real or not regarding my art, and I will always trust the opinions of people I meet in real life over some angry and jealous internet trolls.

Yes I am saying "what they saw was never real". Cuz they are internet trolls with severely distorted ideological biases regarding art who tend to write hateful messages. They are completely different from normal people I meet in real life.

I want criticisms online but they should be valid, constructive and with substance. I've had it regarding anatomical flaws in the past, and I am sure that as I grow as an artist there will be someone who gives valid help in the future on this site and other online communities.

But don't dare think you can try to stomp me down and deny all merits of my art, suggesting mediocrity where there is none, and lecture me about what's real and whether I even have the right to discern what's real for me.

Especially when you accuse, defame, and insult me, I know exactly who is the angry, sad, delusional and jealous troll.

I've seen this guy's work. I highly suspect there's some fuckery going on, they're too perfect to be done freehand. The edges around the hair make me think he's doing some Photoshop filtering, printing it out, and drawing on top of it. Crosshatching across the torso and arms and legs like that, and getting the subtley of light? Bullshit. He printed a light greyscale and drew on top of it.

>Sure, I can concede I don't have much humility.
>he's claiming I am autistic, lacks humility and will be alienated - none of which is true

So do you have humility or not?

For a second there I was proud of you for admitting your own shortcomings. But I guess not.

Idk why I'm even responding to you. Dozens of people have tried to help you via criticism, but you just take it as insults.
You can't be helped.
You'll probably even take this post as an insult and say something about people "stomping down" your work because they're "jealous"

This is definitely one of the most beautiful paintings I've seen by someone on this board, and it is perhaps one of the most beautiful paintings I've ever seen period. The more I look at it the more I am on the brink of tears.

I am disgusted by all of the hateful replies in this thread. Do not listen to them, Chunbum. I would be jealous of your ability too if I were a mouthbreathing virgin living in my parents basement who only cares about Loomis.

You have a real gift, and you are going in the correct direction.

You have the ability to bring light and truth to this world.
