I "painted" a fish once.

Back when captcha was introduced to 4chan the following weeks anons started making captcha comics which were then reposted to various content aggregator sites, one that I made was posted somewhat frequently.

That's about as far as "viral art" goes. I've done a few stupid anime videos that have gotten somewhat popular.

Pic related is likely the most shared thing I've ever made when I posted it to my Tumblr. I think it did so well since the humor comes from seeing the little guy at the top all alone, and since most social media traffic is mobile, most people had to scroll quite a bit through space to see the joke at the bottom.

As of today, it's currently standing at 129,042 notes on Tumblr.

The return on it (ie. getting more followers) was abysmal considering how much it had been passed around. I think it ended up making me around ~250 new followers, despite doing a good job making sure my links were visible. In contrast, I've had posts in the lower thousands of notes bring in more followers than this did. I imagine somewhere down the line someone just deleted my links at the bottom and continued to reblog it. My Tumblr engagement has continued to drop and now I'm happy if I get over 100 notes on something. Since the beginning of the year, I no longer update my Tumblr, and have moved almost exclusively to Instagram.

In other avenues - I've reached the top of /r/gaming with some Nintendo fan art and that actually did pretty well. I was able to point people towards my Instagram which was growing at the time, and I ended up getting several hundred really engaged new followers just from that post alone. I think it was featured on a bunch of different gaming sites too.

I really think that if you do any sort of fan art towards any popular niche (doesn't need to be games/movies/tv/etc.), Reddit is one of the most powerful ways to catapult your work into the rest of the internet.

I know what you mean with followers, though. My shit that takes off on tumblr very rarely get me much, I think the trouble is that past a certain point 90% of your notes are reblogs of reblogs, and the people don't follow it to the source and instead follow the people who cultivate the reblogs.

Humor is generally more important than quality (not to say his thing doesn't have quality, just a general rule). Fan art works too because it tends to have blogs who actually comb tumblr for stuff related to their fandom.

I'm nowhere near that but I've drawn some fucking garbage joke doodles that hit 500 pretty easy.

I totally agree - it can be really frustrating seeing your work explode onto the site, and to have little to show for it. I find content aggregators who repost on Instagram do a much, much better job at linking to the original artist and promoting them.

Make no mistake - a huge part of it is luck and that's completely out of your control. However, I did have a decent number of followers (mid thousands) when I posted it.

I can't really speak for the landscape of Tumblr now, but when I first made mine in 2014, there were a lot of niche blogs that had 'Submit' pages, ranging from generic art blogs (EatSleepDraw, etc.), to whatever niche your subject matter fit into. For example, if you drew some gaming fan art, you could submit it to all of the more broad gaming blogs, and the numerous blogs dedicated to that game specifically. You're essentially taking your work and shoving it onto a blog with more of audience. If you linked back to your work clearly, you should expect some to spill back over to your own blog. That's a example of one easy way to start getting some followers, but I don't know how reliable it is anymore.

Really just an estimate. While a post is really hot, you'll go to your activity tab and see that it's nothing but reblogs and likes of that one post, in addition to some obviously related follows. I just kept a mental note of when it started picking up, and when I stopped seeing the follows come in.

I didnt even know that it was at the time, people on /co/ were just making big dick problems comics and I decided to join in.

The only time I've ever drawn anything with malice intended was during the height of Dobson. Picking fights with other artists seems fun until you realize it's holding you back and you're only doing it to make yourself feel better as an artist rather than improving yourself.
