Mine's still in concept, design-wise, but this is its latest design. Creating a kaiju for a film idea I have based on current events while still paying homage to the original Godzilla film's message.

I think the biggest challenge in monster design is to come up with something that is truly terrifying, but not in any way disgusting and does not look like the Xenomorph.

In writing, I've got all the fears set - universal (the dark, height/size difference, loss of power) and current (terrorist attacks, political struggle, foreign/globalist affairs) - and I am trying to creatively mix them into one Satanic embodiment. It's a lot of effort, considering you also have to consider how to get a message across to a mass audience as well.

Yeah, that's why I'm constantly redoing him again and again, to get hos design just right. Hard part is trying to rely purely on observation rather than aesthetics/other IPs.

I think if you want the creature to be more deformed than usual (at least that's my guess with the eye being below the mouth/jaw), then I would also purposely misalign other body parts, such as the shoulder-connection to the girdle or the waist-to-hip ratio. Just my suggestion.

it would be cool to have undead skeleton druids who died attempting to transform into animals, so the reanimated skeletons are half warped into animal shape in grotesque looking ways

Yeah, if that's what you're going for. Pushing things and exaggerating things as much as possible can really be good for generating ideas and new designs, afterwards, you can simplify it to make it more "practical" or "realistic."
I do a bunch of creature design and study animals every day, that being said, I'm only recently getting back into serious painting so I have mostly sketches right now.
