But can fan art be considered also to be a modern spiritual successor to studying masters? In this case, studying not technical drawing skills, but what makes characters appealing or marketable? Can fan art be considered studies of masters of design and appealing characters/worlds?

If you want to actually get any attention, fanart is the easiest way to do it. And if you want to do commissions, you need attention.
Plus, it's fun desu. I don't need to be doing SUPER SERIOUS ART STUDY MODE 100% of the time. I swear it's like this board has never heard of fun in their lives.
